Card 08 – NWL @ Township Auditorium, Columbia, SC, February 19th year one
NWL Tag Team Title Tournament – Round One
Cowboy Bob Orton & Bob Orton Sr. v. Brutus Beefcake & Koko B. Ware The choice of the Birdman as a replacement for the injured Buff Bagwell has the fans dancing at ringside. The match as great back and forth action from the outset. The Ortons manage to trap Beefcake in the ring for a prolonged attack getting some solid heat from ringside. Ware finally gets the hot tag in against Cowboy Bob Orton and takes him down with a top rope dropkick and cross bodyblock for near falls. Ware then nails Orton with a GHOSTBUSTER. Orton Sr. tries to make the save but Beefcake is able to block and Ware gets the three count. Ware gets the best of Orton two weeks in row and Cowboy Bob is not impressed. **
Killer Bees (Jim Brunzell & B. Brian Blair) v. Midnight Express (Stan Lane & Bobby Eaton) w/Jim Cornette A rematch from last week was featured in the next tournament match up. The Express immediately cut off Brunzell from his corner and within the opening few moves crush him with a VEG-O-MATIC but Blair is able to break up the cover. The Express keep control with Lane connecting with a Midnight Lariat. Brunzell is reeling and Lane finishes it with a SUPERKICK. *
Don Leo Jonathan v. Chris Candido w/Tammy The story in this one was Tammy finding a way to continually interfere or distract Jonathan in an effort to give Candido the upper hand. It really no purpose except to anger Jonathan which proved not to be great idea. Jonathan had the match won with a MORMON SWING but Tammy distracted Jonathan. Candido was afforded a brief opportunity to get control of the action when Tammy was able to distract Jonathan momentarily which allowed Candido to knock Jonathan from the top of the corner. Candido could not capitalize. Jonathan crushed Candido with back to back to back rolling back splashes and would have had the three count but again Tammy interfered jumping onto Jonathan’s back earning a disqualification. Jonathan gives Tammy an atomic drop spilling her to the floor. Candido and Tammy escape to the back. * ½
Iron Mike DiBiase v. Masked Superstar w/Jim Cornette Superstar is able to overpower DiBiase early on but cannot put his away with a COBRA HOLD. DiBiase starts his comeback by countering a backdrop with a piledriver. The action goes outside and both men trade blows but DiBiase takes it too far when he cracks Superstar across the back with a chairshot. The bell sounds and DiBiase is disqualified. Cornette quickly collects Superstar and heads to the back leaving a frustrated DiBiase in the ring. *
Hacksaw Jim Duggan (inj 1) v. The Sheik w/Abdullah Farouk The USA Chants are off the charts as Duggan hits the Auditorium with old glory flying high. Duggan beat Sheik from post to post for several minutes with the fans eating up each clothesline, tackle and punch. The action goes outside and Sheik continues to take an epic beating and soon is a bloody mess. Back inside, Farouk’s distraction saves Sheik from a FLYING SPEAR. A bloody Sheik takes a second FLYING SPEAR a few minutes later and Farouk jumps to the apron distracting Duggan. The distraction is enough to allow Sheik to attack from behind and take control of the match. It is back and forth at this point as the action goes in and out of the ring. Sheik wins a brawl on the floor and then traps Duggan in a CAMEL CLUTCH. Duggan’s injury cannot hold up and the referee calls for the bell. Sheik makes a strong comeback to get the win. ***
Ed Strangler Lewis v. Jim Londos These two have traded victories this year already and both are looking to gain a shot of the Junior Heavyweight Title. Lewis has a clear plan from outset and takedown leads to a STRANGLER’S HEADLOCK. Londos managed to escape but Lewis would go back to hold twice more in the next few moves to pick up the victory via submission in a shocking one sided contest. dud
Bruiser Brody v. Missing Link w/Abdullah Farouk Brody has the fans on their feet as he charges the ring. Brody dominates the match with a mix not of brawling but of science as well mixing in two figure four leglocks (ch). Link is able to counter a deathjump with a boot to the face. Outside, Brody eats the ring rails and is busted open but the site of his own blood just fires up Brody. Brody lands a JUMPING KNEE DROP. Farouk cannot distract Brody or the referee but Sheik hitting the ring does the job. Sheik attacks Brody with a sharp object and the bell sounds. Link has been disqualified. Link joins the attack but Hacksaw Jim Duggan arrives with his 2x4 in hand to break things up. * ½
NWL Tag Team Tournament Finals
Brutus Beefcake & Koko B. Ware v. Midnight Express (Stan Lane & Bobby Eaton) w/Jim Cornette The fans are solidly behind the makeshift team of Ware and Beefcake. They get some extra inspiration from Buff Bagwell coming to ringside to be in their corner. Bagwell has a soft neck collar on but is in good spirts and certainly looks well enough to counter act any actions by Cornette. The action starts off very closely contested but Ware gets cut off from his corner. Ware is nearly submits to Eaton’s Divorce Court but manage to make the ropes and will the support of the fans gets the hot tag to Beefcake. The action goes back and forth from that point. Ware gets back into the action again against Eaton and mounts the corner for a perfect cross body block deathjump. The referee makes the three count and we have new tag team champions! Koko B. Ware wins his second NWL Title. *
More news coming out of NWL competition committee. Japanese champion Rikidozan has signed a contract to appear in NWL rings immediately. His first order of business was to issue a challenge to current NWL champion Antonio Inoki, his former student. Before Inoki could respond or the committee could make a decision, former UFC and NWA Champion Dan Severn has announced his own contract signing and issued his own challenge to Inoki. Faced with two fresh challengers with championship history of their own, the NWL competition committee has made the fan friendly decision of booking a number one contenders match between Severn and Rikidozan on the next card. The decision has not popular with Mil Mascaras who many insiders considered to be next in line for another shot at the title. How will Mascaras respond to these recent developments. Rumour has it that two other competitors have also signed contracts.

EpicDave. The results were shocking to say the least. I tried to right the wrong tonight and you can see the result. The dice can be awesome sometimes. Card 09 – NWL @ Ft. Homer Hesterly Armory, Tampa, FLA, February 26th year one Virgil v. Bob Orton Sr. Virgil makes his NWL debut after spending time in it’s sister promotion by the side of the Million Dollar Man. Orton is clearly not in a good place after last week’s Tag Team Title Tournament and Virgil is the victim of Orton’s frustration. The action quickly is taken to the floor by Orton who runs Virgil face first into the ring rails and busted open. The referee makes the disqualification call. Welcome to the NWL Virgil. dud Chris Candido w/Tammy v. Justin Credible Credible receives a mixed ovation as he returns from suspension. The fans are all over Tammy from the outset. Candido was a machine tonight and Credible showed some rust from his time away from the ring. Candido dominated the action in and out of the ring with mix of science and questionable tactics. After picking up a pair of near falls, including a roll up in the corner with his foot on the ropes, Candido landed a BLONDE BOMB for the three count. * Konnan & Mil Mascaras v. The Vachon Brothers (Mad Dog & Butcher Vachon) The Vachon’s were clearly not happy about being stripped of the Tag Team Titles but they were in tough against Mascaras and the debuting Konnan. Mascaras uses his agility to get the best of Butcher Vachon early on much to the pleasure of the fans and soon the Mad Dog does no better. Konnan treats Vachon to a 187 and a seated dropkick before applying the TEQUILA SUNRISE. Butcher Vachon takes down Konnan with a vicious looking clothesline to the back of the head. The referee gets Butcher out of the ring Mad Dog makes the cover for the three count (Snake Eyes). The fans are not thrilled with the referee but the Vachon’s pick up a controversial win in their first match back. * Cowboy Bob Orton (Inj 2) v. Don Leo Jonathan Orton spends some additional time stretching out his injured leg before getting into the ring. The stretching must have done the trick because despite the size difference Orton looks like a million dollars tonight. The match momentum built to the SUPERPLEX spot and the fans not only got one SUPERPLEX spot to Jonathan but back to back SUPERPLEXES. Ringside exploded for both and even popped louder when Jonathan kicked out of the cover. Jonathan battled back and the fans were treated to a giant swing. Jonathan appeared to have the match won after a swinging full nelson but Bob Orton Sr. hit the ring and nailed Jonathan with an elbow smash to the back of the head. The referee got Orton Sr. out of the ring and let the action continue over the protests of ringside. Orton controlled the balance of the action and scored the three count after a third SUPERPLEX. *** ½ Texas Death Match – Bruiser Brody & Hacksaw Jim Duggan v. The Sheik & Missing Link w/Abdullah Farouk With no rules the fans were braced for an all-out war in this one. It is chaos from the outset with Duggan hammering away on Link. Sheik tags in and manages to backdrop Duggan over the ropes to the floor. Outside, Sheik cracks Duggan with a chair shot busting him open. While Link brawls with Brody on the floor, Sheik traps Duggan in a CAMEL CLUTCH. Duggan loses a crazy amount of blood but battles out the hold but Sheik throws a FIREBALL and Duggan is done. The fans are almost ready to riot as Brody hits the ring with his chain in hand before Duggan can suffer any further damage. ** NWL Junior Heavyweight Title Match – George Hackenschmidt (ch) v. Ed Lewis What a solid mat contest followed. Hackenschmidt looked dominating in his title win against earlier this month and the Strangler performed like he had something to prove tonight. Hackenscmidt took the early advantage after a flawless exchange of counters and worked Lewis into a RUSSIAN BEARHUG. Lewis was able to make the ropes and then took over the match unleashing his STRANGLER’S HEADLOCK four times. Hackenschmidt refused to give in to the constant grinding attack and Lewis moves to full nelsons and then picked up a near submission off a double wristlock. Hackenschmidt then mounts his own comeback and sends Lewis into the ropes. On the rebound, Lewis executes a perfect inside cradle and we have new champion. *** ½ Number 1 Contender Match – Rikidozan v. Dan Severn The international media cram ringside for this contest. There is a lengthy puroesu ceremony prior to the match and Rikidozan sets the tone by turning down Severn’s offer to shake hands. The intensity for this one was off the charts. The chain wrestling was stunning early on as neither man could find a way to break through the other’s defense. Rikidozan rebounded Severn off the ropes but Severn nearly stole the win with a quick cradle. The Beast then went on an offensive run including a fireman’s carry slam and a series of strikes. Rikidozan was game and countered with head butts and the occasional chop that the fans seemed to enjoy. Severn continued to work a solid mat attack but could not get a submission or three count. Frustration lead the match to the floor where Rikidozan’s chops ruled the day. Back inside, Rikidozan could not maintain the advantage. German suplex/fireman’s carry slam combs times three were next and the fans were roaring. Still, Rikidozan refused to be pinned. Finally, Severn was able to trap Rikidozan in a choke sleeper in the middle of the ring and the referee called for the bell. The fans gave both men a huge ovation but cheers soon turned to jeers when Rikidozan refused to shake Severn’s hand post match. **** NWL Tag Team Title Match – Brutus Beefcake & Koko B. Ware (ch) v. Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton & Stan Lane) w/Jim Cornette The fans are solidly behind the Champions and are looking forward to some fast paced tag team action after two straight bouts of solid mat wrestling. Ware and Beefcake are fired up from the outset of this one. Beefcake overpowers Lane and then catches him with a FLYING KNEE SMASH for a near fall. Ware tags in and nails a clothesline followed by a GHOSTBUSTER. Beefcake cuts off Eaton and the champions retain in another shocker. Cornette cannot believe it as the fans celebrate with Beefcake and the Birdman. dud

Beefcake and Ware winning and retaining the titles against the Midnight Express is awesome on so many levels. It is one of the things that makes this game so great. You just take the curveballs and run with them. I can just picture the state that Jim Cornette is in right now. Classic. Really enjoying this fed Bookerbill.

Card 10 – NWL @ Memorial Auditorium, Spartanburg, SC, March 5th year one
Vachon Brothers (Mad Dog Vachon & Butcher Vachon) v. Killer Bees (B. Brian Blair & Jim Brunzell) The Vachons attempt to push around their fan favourite opponents early on with their power advantage but the Bees uses well timed tags to get themselves out of trouble. It is back and forth for the most part until Mad Dog Vachon gets some heat on Blair. Blair becomes tangled in the ropes. The referee steps in and Vachon shoves the official to the mat and continues to attack Blair. The referee calls for the disqualification. Gary Michael Cappetta announces the Bees as the winner as Vachon is left fuming in the ring. dud
Jim Londos v. Chris Candido w/Tammy The fans are all over Candido and Tammy from the opening bell but Candido looks very impressive early on including a superplex and top rope huracanrana that has Londos reeling. Outside, Londos is able to reverse and Irish whip and Candido goes hard into the ring post shoulder first. With the momentum changed, Londos quickly executes an AIRPLANE SPIN for the three count. It is Londos’ only offense of the match. *
Sherri Martel v. Ida Mae Martinez The special attraction ladies match was up next. Martel pushed around Martinez early on but she managed to stun Martel will an inside cradle for a near fall. Martinez then connected with back to back DROPKICKS but could not get the three count. Martinez then locked in a Texas Cloverleaf in the middle of the ring for the upset submission win. * ½
The Sheik w/Abdullah Farouk v. Hacksaw Jim Duggan Duggan appears ready for a fight but Sheik unleashes a FIREBALL just minutes into the match and gets the three count. The fans are stunned and give it to the referee who missed the incredibly missed the infraction. Dud
Mil Mascaras & Konnan v. Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton & Stan Lane) w/Jim Cornette Mascaras and Konnan have the fans support and Mascaras looks very good against both Eaton and Lane early on. Konnan gets in trouble and is cut off from his corner. The Express take him out with a VEG-O-MATIC. Eaton counters the pin save but Konnan is able to kick out of the cover. The Express then connect with a ROCKET LAUNCHER. Lane cuts off Mascaras and Eaton hooks the leg for the three count. *
The Missing Link w/Abdullah Farouk v. Bruiser Brody There was nothing pretty about this one with both men trading blows early on. Link gets the upper hand with a tackle off the ropes. He connects with back to back BACK FLYING HEAD BUTTS but Brody kicks out both times. The action goes in and out of the ring. Link nails Brody with a wild chair shot busting him open. Brody never really recovers from the blow and Link dominates the balance of the action picking up the win with a third BACK FLYING HEAD BUTT. **
Junior Heavyweight Title Match – Ed Strangler Lewis (ch) v. George Hackenschmidt From a match featuring complete mayhem to a title bout between two of the great mat wrestlers of their time. Hackenschmidt and Lewis had traded the belt back and forth recently and the fans were ready for another classic tonight. Hackenschmidt seemed to be a slight step ahead of the champion tonight pressing the attack. Lewis was able to counter very well to keep the momentum even. Hackenschmidt went outside of this comfort zone to gain the upper hand coming off the top rope with a clothesline deathjumps. The impact was enough to set up a RUSSIAN BEARHUG and Lewis had no answer. Hackenschmidt regains the title. * ½
World Title Match – Antonio Inoki (ch) v. Dan Severn There is a lengthy puroesu ceremony prior to the bell and the action gets underway with a handshake. Severn nearly takes the match in the opening minutes with a choke sleeper. The near submission has the crowd hooked and the media at ringside scramble for the best positions. Severn suplexes the champion but Inoki battles back and a top rope kneedrop gets him his first near fall. Now we have real battle with both men getting in their signature moves. Inoki takes the battle to the floor and runs Severn into the ring rails by the fans. The move earns the champion some heat but does its job. Severn is clearly dazed and falls to a ENZUIGIRI. Inoki pasts yet another test. ** ½

Really nice booking. Unfortunately, the dice don't always provide the five-star bouts we would like. Still, I would watch Inoki vs. Severn any day of the week, and the Midnight Express is worth the price of admission on their own.

Card 11 – NWL @ Coliseum - Charlotte, NC March 12th year one
Playboy Buddy Rose v. Yukon Eric A couple of new faces to the NWL clashed in the opening round. Rose demands to be announced at 217 pounds and tells the fans that he is the world greatest junior heavyweight wrestler. The fans were not sure what to expect from this one but it was a war from start to finish. Both men pulled out all the stops in and out of the ring. Rose bloodied Eric with a foreign object half way through the match but could not get the pin after a BOMBS AWAY. Eric sent Rose into the ring post later and soon both men wore the crimson mask. Eric’s KODIAK CRUNCH did not get the submission and the battle raged on. Rose looked to have the match won with a brainbuster but Eric kicked out at the last second. The action went back and forth until Rose used a pair of sleeper holds to ware down Eric and set up another BOMBS AWAY for the win. *** ½
Gorgeous George w/Cherie Dupré v. Jim Londos Another fresh face to the NWL appeared in the next match as always controversial Gorgeous George was lead to the ring by Cherie Dupré. Londos drew on the fans support and absolutely destroyed George from the opening bell. Londos quickly went for the win with an AIRPLANE SPIN. Dupré could not cause a distraction but Londos could only get a two count. Londos then tried for a submission with a BOSTON CRAB but George was able to make the ropes. Londos continued to dominate until finally George was able to counter and go on offense. George sent Londos into the ropes and on the rebound, Londos executed a perfect small package for the three count. The fans celebrated with Londos post match while George sulked to the back. * ½
Killer Bees (Jumping Jim Brunzell & B. Brian Blair) v. Ortons (Cowboy Bob Orton & Bob Orton Sr.) Maybe not the freshest match on the card with the teams having battled twice before but each team had come away with a victory in their previous battles so this was a rubber match. Brunzell has the fans in the palm of his hand early on and there is a great exchange where he traps Cowboy Orton in a figure four leglock but Orton is able to tag out while in the hold. However, seconds later, Brunzell has the same hold on Orton Sr. The momentum turns when there is a referee bump allowing Cowboy Bob Orton to attack Brunzell from behind leading to a near fall. Both teams are able to make the tag and Orton and Blair exchange whips in to the corner and reversal. Orton gets the upper hand and tags in his father who works Blair’s neck with a series of neckbreakers and plants him with a PILEDRIVER. Cowboy Orton blocks Brunzell’s save attempt while his father gets the three count. **
Missing Link w/Abdullah Farouk v. Hacksaw Jim Duggan As much as the fans were not happy with the previous match finish, they are on their feet for Hacksaw as he storms the ring ready for a fight. Duggan struggles early on to get anything going as Link seems a step ahead tonight. Duggan finally explodes with a Tough Guy clothesline that spills the match to the floor. Duggan eats the ring post and is busted open. Link takes advantage with a BACK FLYING HEAD BUTT but Duggan kicks out of the cover. Link that grabs a chair from ringside and nails Duggan with a wild chair shot. The referee calls for the disqualification. Link is crazed and attacks the referee with a pair of head butts and then goes back to work on Duggan. This brings Bruiser Brody to the ring with chain in hand. Farouk wisely gets Link away from ringside and the pair exit to huge heat. No doubt Link’s action will have repercussions with NWL management. **
Dan Severn v. Mil Mascaras Many insiders are happy to see Mascaras back in singles action and this one gets underway with a handshake. The early action showcased Severn’s mat skills but he made the mistake of sending Mascaras into the ropes. On the rebound, Mascaras countered a backdrop with a piledriver and then immediately followed with a CROSSBODY ATTACK for a near fall. Mascaras lead the action from that point mixing his speed with submission. Back to back slingshot planches nearly end it and Severn can barely get a shoulder up after a FLYING BODYPRESS. Mascaras mounts the corner for a second FLYING BODYPRESS and gets the three count. ** ½ Don Leo Jonathan v. Rikidozan The media from Japan are jammed at ringside for the one. There is a lengthy puroesu ceremony prior to the opening bell. Again, Rikidozan has no interest in the handshake offered by Jonathan. Rikidozan showed no fear of Jonathan’s size and at one point countered Jonathan’s deathjump attempt by tossing Jonathan off the corner to the mat. Fans thought the ring might break. Jonathan did have his moments however and came close to ending the match with a MORMON SWING. Twice Rikidozan connected with THUNDEROUS CHOPS but could not keep Jonathan down for the three count. There was a referee bump for the second time tonight and things became bloody and violent when Rikidozan rammed Jonathan into the ringpost and then cracked him with a chair shot. Rikidozan downed his opponent with THUNDEROUS CHOPS but the referee was still down. Jonathan then was able to run Rikidozan into the ring post and both men were busted open. A new referee arrived to carry on with the match. With both men a bloody mess, things became more desperate and it was Rikidozan who manages to connect with another set of THUNDEROUS CHOPS to claim the win. ****
Bruiser Brody v. The Sheik w/Abdullah Farouk The wait is over and they meet one on one in the ring. This one was everything you would expect from these two. By the finish it was complete chaos and mayhem. Brody dominated from the opening bell with slams, clotheslines, punches and stomps. A JUMPING KNEE DROP got a two count. Sheik battle back biting Brody and then going to work on him with a foreign object when Brody was trapped in the ropes. The blood was flowing from this point and Brody added to it running Sheik into the ring post. Sheik could not get the submission with a CAMEL CLUTCH and a second JUMPING KNEE DROP from Brody did not lead to victory. Both men ended up brawling on the floor and the referee could not regain control. The result was a double disqualification. Brody and Sheik did not care and brawled their way back to the dressing room. ***
World Title Match – Antonio Inoki (ch) v. George Hackenschmidt It is champion v. champion in our main event as Inoki puts the World Title on the line against Junior Heavyweight Champion Hackenschmidt. The fans experience a second puroesu ceremony and the Asian media at ringside eats it up. Hackenschmidt is able to assert his power advantage early and within no time has Inoki trapped in two RUSSIAN BEAR HUGS but Inoki is able to battle free both times. Hackenschmidt gets caught charging into the corner with an elbow to the face and the champion goes to work with a series of suplexes, holds and a top rope knee drop. Inoki connects with an ENZUIGIRI but Hackenschmidt is responds with a kick out at two. It does back and forth from this point. Inoki mounts the corner for a deathjump cross body but Hackenscmidt reverses the move into the powerslam. The fans think it is over but Inoki kicks out at 2 ¾. However, the momentum has turned and Hackenschmidt nails his own deathjump smash much to the surprised of many at ringside and then uses a series of holds to set up another RUSSIAN BEAR HUG. Inoki is trapped in the middle of the ring and we have a new champion. George Hackenschmidt stands on the corner with both titles held up while the mediat at ringside scramble for the next covershot for their respective publications. *** ½
It seems that NWL management makes more media addresses than any other promotion in history. The first announcement following tonight’s card dealt with The Missing Link. As a result of his attack on a NWL official, Link has been suspended indefinitely by NWL management. No one knows for sure what that means but with Sabu being provided his release recently and now Link suspended, The Sheik is suddenly on his own again. To be honest, that is probably the way he likes it. The second announcement concerns the NWL Junior Heavyweight Title. The NWL competition committee has ruled that George Hackenschmidt cannot hold both titles so Hackenschmidt has vacated the Junior Heavyweight Title. A new champion will be determined on the next card via an eight man single elimination tournament.

Buddy Rose... always entertaining! I was pulling for Jonathan, but Rikidozan is double-tough and it's no surprise both men ended up a bloody mess. Congrats to Hackenschmidt for double gold!
