WWA #17
Grand Olympic Auditorium; Los Angeles
---Our opener has
Sensational Sherri Martel's Love Brigade squaring off against
Chief Joe Omega/John Pulsar. Martel has stated that her charges will beat the time it took
The Hennigs to beat Omega/Pulsar in a previous match on
#15. There were no consequences announced if the Love Brothers accomplished it or not but bragging rights were in order.
Omega/Pulsar took it to the Love Brothers early on but Martel caused a distraction that firmly put her Brigade in charge. After a few more minutes of action, Hartford Love put Pulsar down with the NECKBREAKER. However, when the winning time was announced, Martel's Brigade had failed to beat their opponents faster than the Hennigs did. Martel was enraged, blaming everyone she could think off. Martel assaulted the timekeeper before Larry Hennig came to ringside. The elder Hennig threw out a challenge that was eagerly accepted by Martel.
---Our next match featured everyone's favorite 'rowdy'
Masked Canadian as he faced
Billy Red Lyons in another match of their budding rivalry. Lyons started strong but MC positioned himself so that the referee could not see him kidney punch Lyons with the FOREIGN OBJECT. Lyons went down in a heap as MC put Lyons down for good with a Swinging Neckbreaker.
Afterwards, Masked Canadian pulled a pair of scissors from his boot and started cutting some of Billy's hair. The referee immediately put a stop to it but MC bragged about cutting Lyons hair.
---An exciting tag team bout was up next as
Antonio Rocca/Ilio DiPaolo faced
The Valentines. Johnny V had already secured a singles win over Rocca a two weeks ago and was a dominant force in this match. No matter what Rocca/DiPaolo tried they could not stop the Valentine train. They worked over DiPaolo's knee and ankle to set up Greg's FIGURE FOUR LEGLOCK for the finish.
---Our next match of the evening saw the red-hot
Tony Atlas take on
Gorgeous George. Tony continued his hot streak and threw George around the ring like a rag doll at times. Even distraction attempts by
Cherie Dupree didn't faze Atlas. Tony dropped George with authority with the PRESS SLAM & SPLASH but Dupree dragged George from the ring. Dupree helped George to the back as the Gorgeous One took a COUNT-OUT loss for this match.
---The third match of the
Round Robin Tag Title Series occupied the
Semi spot on the card as
Pampero Firpo/Wild Bull Curry faced
The Fantastics. If Firpo/Curry won the match, they would win the
WWA tag team championship. However, if the Fantastics won, then that would leave all three teams at 1-1 and a definitive resolution would have to be made to fill the tag title vacancy. The
Hamilton Wrecking Crew was at ringside for this match and were warned by the referee not to interfere in the match.
The match started slow as both teams were weary of making an early mistake that would cost them the match. The intensity picked up when Curry tossed Tommy Rogers to the floor and started jawing with both of the Tolos Brothers. This distraction allowed Rogers/Fulton to take over the match and get several nearfalls on Curry with Rogers' FANTASTIC CRADLE and a Series of Dropkicks from Rogers. The technicos set up for the ROCKET LAUNCHER but Rogers was tossed off the top turnbuckle by Firpo and onto both Tolos Brothers on the floor.
This enraged Chris/John Tolos that the referee had to get security to separate them and sent the Tolos back to the locker room. However, this left Curry isolated and Rogers/Fulton finally hit the ROCKET LAUNCHER to get the win. This left all three teams at 1-1 and WWA officials have promised a resolution to determine a winner in this series. Stay tuned.
---If that weren't enough, our
Main Event featured
Mil Mascaras defending the
Americas' championship against nemesis,
King Kong Bundy. Bundy was told earlier in the week that he had to tell the referee before any pinfall count was made whether or not he intended to use a '5-count' or not. This would factor heavily into the match as Bundy started strong. Once again, Mil's strong moves worked to his disadvantage as Bundy easily countered those moves.
Bundy started working over the champ's back with a series of Running Power Slams, Power Drops, and Bear Hugs. During the sequence, Bundy dropped Mil with a ring-shaking Power Drop but couldn't make up his mind fast enough for a '3 or 5 count'. When he finally elected for a 3-count, Mil was able to get a shoulder up for a long nearfall. After Bundy went back to attack mode, he crushed Mil with the AVALANCHE a few minute later, but once again couldn't make his mind up fast enough and gave Mil the opportunity to roll to the Auditorium floor.
Mil was hurting from the sustained beating he was taking but the tide turned when Bundy charged at the weary champ and missed! Bundy went careening into the ringpost and busted himself open from the force of the impact of his head hitting the steel post. Mil seemed to find a second wind as he climbed the buckles and dropped the FLYING BODYPRESS onto the prone Bundy on the floor. Mil was able to roll Bundy back into the ring where he hit the challenger with a slingshot CROSSBODY ATTACK to get the pinfall and retain his title for the 6th time.
***With
#17 in the books, we set our sights on
#18. The
Main Event will feature the
Americas' Champion once again as
Mil Mascaras will face the red-hot
Tony Atlas. WWA officials felt Atlas deserved a title shot and Mil agreed to the match on a short turn around. Will Mil be able to deal with the power of 'Mr USA' a week after sustaining a beating from
King Kong Bundy?
Also on the card,
Rikidozan will get another shot at
Freddie Blassie. The Japanese legend is in town once again to put a hurting on his longtime nemesis.
The card will open with a
16-man Battle Royal with the winner getting an
Americas' championship title shot at
#24. Don't miss the action. See you next week.
