WWA #23
Grand Olympic Auditorium; Los Angeles
---Our opener has
Jim Londos turn in another impressive performance as he has no issues putting
Ron Hutchison on his shoulders for the AIRPLANE SPIN in the opening moments of the match. Shortly after, Londos locks in the BOSTON CRAB to seal the win.
---
The Fantastics will face
Mr Fuji/Mr Saito next week but this week we get
Tommy Rogers vs
Mr Saito. Saito is just mean and sadistic as he worked over Tommy's legs throughout the match. Several times, Saito went for his SCORPION LEGLOCK finisher but Rogers was able to get out of the hold. With the crowd firmly in his corner, Rogers fought back with a series of Powerslams and Dropkicks and got a nearfall with the TOMIKAZE. However, that wasn't enough as Saito started ripping at Tommy's face to gain control of the match. Saito would slam Rogers' leg into the ringpost before locking in the SCORPION LEGLOCK for the victory. Afterwards, Rogers' had to be helped to the back as he couldn't put any weight on that leg.
---Our next match saw two ad-hoc teams face each other as the
Masked Canadian/Bobby Shane faced
Billy Red Lyons/Koko B. Ware. Once again, Masked Canadian got under the fans' skin, taunting the crowd, and bringing them to a near boiling fury. Once the match started, Lyons went after MC but ate a right hand from Bobby Shane. Shane/MC worked over Lyons but Billy fired back and went to make the tag to Ware. However, Koko just dropped off the apron and walked to the back to a loud jeer from the crowd. From this point on, Lyons couldn't sustain any offense and fell to Shane's JAPANESE SLEEPER.
Afterwards, Masked Canadian took out a pair of scissors and cut a small portion of Lyons' hair. Once Billy was revived from the Sleeper, he was irate. He grabbed the Auditorium house mike and accepted Masked Canadian's
'Mask vs Hair Match' challenge.
---This was
Pepper Gomez' first appearance since battling his arch-nemesis
Ray Stevens a couple of weeks ago in Stevens' last WWA match for the foreseeable future. This week Gomez faced a tough challenge in
Gorgeous George. Pepper gets a huge response from the crowd during his introductions but George jumps the fan favorite before the opening bell. George is in complete control but can't put Gomez away. A frustrated George goes to the top but leaps right into Gomez' MEXICAN CRADLE for the finish.
George is angry over the finish and lays into Gomez after the match. George nails Gomez with
Cherie Dupree's 'loaded' purse and Gomez drops like a rock before security hustles George out of the ring. George grabbed the house mike and promised this was not over.
---Our next match is a prelude to the
WWA tag title match in two weeks that sees
Pampero Firpo/Wild Bull Curry once again defend the titles against the
Hamilton Wrecking Crew. Tonight's match-up sees
Pampero Firpo battle
John Tolos in a wild match. Firpo and Tolos battered each other with everything thy had during the match. Both re-opened forehead cuts from each other's punishing assaults. Firpo tried to apply his EL GARFIO finisher but Tolos was able to make it to the ropes. After some more back and forth action, Tolos grabbed the advantage long enough to secure a win with the FLYING KNEEDROP.
---Our
Main Event is a doozy as
Red Bastien returns to team with
Bobo Brazil against
The Sheik/Kevin Sullivan. Bastien is looking for his pound of flesh from Sheik and goes right after him from the opening bell. Bobo and Sullivan were an afterthought for the majority of the match as Bastien was bent on punishing Sheik as much as he could. However, this would get Bastien into trouble as he got trapped in the rudo corner and got pummeled. Sullivan gets quick nearfalls with shots from a Foreign Object that went unnoticed by the referee. Somehow, Bastien fights backs and Bobo gets tagged in.
Bobo cleans house as he bounces both Sullivan and Sheik all over the ring. The action goes to the floor where Sheik mounts a comeback and posts Bobo. Back in the ring, Sheik is sadistic as he repeatedly stabs at a cut in Bobo's forehead. Somehow, Bobo is able to fight back and drops Sheik with the COCO BUTT but instead of making the cover, Bobo tags in Bastien.
Bastien takes it to Sheik and punishes his now hated foe with several ATOMIC DROPS. Bobo gets back into the action as he battled Sullivan on the Auditorium floor. Bobo posts Sullivan several times drawing the ire of the referee. However, the referee missed Sheik throwing the FIREBALL at a charging Bastien. The moved catches Bastien flush and he goes down clutching his face. Sheik adds to the agony by locking in the CAMEL CLUTCH. Bobo, sensing that his friend, is in serious pain, rolls into the ring and blasts Sheik with a wooden chair, drawing the DISQUALIFICATION. Bobo chases Sheik around the ring with the chair before Sheik rolls to the floor.
EMT's had to attend to Bastien and help him to the back. It would be revealed on the 'Recap Show' later in the week that Bastien would miss 3 weeks of action but Sheik would escape any official suspensions because the referee did not see the Fireball being thrown. However, WWA officials said they would keep Sheik out of action until Bastien is able to return.
***The
Bastien/Sheik situation is heating up and
Billy Red Lyons has accepted
Masked Canadian's challenge. We will soon find out when that match will take place. Next week,
Mil Mascaras will have his Version 9 title defense of the
Americas' Championship as he takes on
Don Leo Jonathan. DLJ won a Battle Royal six weeks ago to earn the title shot when he lastly eliminated
The Destroyer. Destroyer will be at ringside as
King Kong Bundy has promised to interject himself into the championship match and Destroyer has vowed to not let that happen. Destroyer will also be in action as he takes on the popular
Antonio Rocca.
Also on the card,
The Fantastics square off against
Mr Fuji/Mr Saito in the first tag team match between the two teams.
Tony Atlas/Koko B. Ware vs
The Valentines,
Pepper Gomez vs
Bobby Shane, and
SD Jones vs
Sabu round out the card.
....See you next week at #24....
