NJPW Bringing G1 Climax Tournament Shows To LA In July
Tonight, during WrestleKingdom 11, NJPW announced that they will be bringing their G1 Climax 27 tournament to the US in July. The promotion has two shows scheduled for Los Angeles, California, on July 1st and July 2nd. This will be the first time that NJPW will be bringing stand-alone shows to the US.
The G1 Climax tournament is the company’s biggest tournament of the year, and the fact that they are bringing two shows to the US is interesting. They normally do shows in the US in conjunction with Ring Of Honor, but these will apparently have nothing to do with them. Hopefully, this is just the start of the promotion doing stand-alone shows in the States. If these dates are successful, I can easily see short tours happening in the future.
The G1 Climax tournament is held as a round-robin, with winners from two blocks wrestling in the final to decide that year’s winner. In its current format, the tournament lasts four weeks. The winner of each block is determined by a points system; two points for a victory, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. The winner earns an IWGP Heavyweight Championship title shot and goes on to NJPW’s biggest show of the year, WrestleKingdom, to face the champion.

In fairness, they're "G1 Special" shows, meaning you're not going to see tournament matches since the tournament starts in Sapporo on 7/17. It's gonna be interesting to see how well those draw.

Turns out these shows are happening at the Anime Expo in Long Beach. Bushiroad (NJ's parent company) have events going on during the Expo in the same building during the same weekend. For context, convention shows typically aren't very good in terms of match quality (or general importance). Theu're basically just house shows but if you missed the ROH/NJ shows and can't get to the ones they're probably gonna do this year, this is still a good opportunity to see those guys live.

it sounds like I have a Summer teaching job locked up so at the moment I plan to go to the Saturday (but not the Sunday) NJPW G1 Climax show in July in Los Angeles.

I think people ran with the idea they were G1 shows because of the name and because the graphic for the shows was shown after the one for opening night in Sapporo and the final three nights at the Sumo Hall. Here's a still shot I took from the Big Match Schedule video they showed on Wrestle Kingdom. and here's the link to the video for anyone who wants to know when the other big events for the first half of the year will be and where they take place.

even if the advertisement I read was incorrect, it really was being advertised as a G1 Climax show- the first post on this thread is where I copied and pasted that advertisement.
but I don't really care about the actual status of these shows, I simply want to go see NJPW in July.

No, it wasn't. You copied and pasted something from a site that read "G1" and ran with it. I literally posted a screencap from the video (and the video itself) where they announced the shows showing that they billed the shows as G1 Special when they announced them. The only people who have ever thought these were G1 Climax shows were people who didn't bother to do any actual research. With that said, I hope you have fun at the shows. Those ticket prices are kind of insane but maybe they'll give you something good.
