LOW Southern Wrestling Alliance - Hampton Coliseum - Hampton, VA (Card #580)
1) Heartbreak Express defeated Necro Butcher & Timber by DQ:
The cult favorite Heartbreak Express (Fabulous Phil & Superstar Sean Davis) took on the dangerous duo of Necro Butcher & Timber "The Insane Lumberjack" in the opener. The Express, backed by a supportive crowd, dominated the early action which included the 320-pound Sean coming off the top rope with a flying bodypress (ch) on Necro for a big near fall. Sean then followed with a sexy gyration and big splash for another near fall. Timber didn't fare much better as the Express nearly pinned him after hitting The Heartbreaker. Necro and Timber took this one out to the floor several times and Necro later hit the Tiger Driver on Phil for a near fall. Phil was the victim of a brutal outside ring attack by Timber that resulted in the disqualification decision. It didn't end there, though, as Timber bludgeoned Phil with the barbed wire ax handle busting him open. Sean was able to make the save but it was a little too late as Phil needed medical assistance and had to be helped to the back.
2) One Man Gang defeated Chief Omega:
The massive 495-pound One Man Gang shocked everyone by reuniting with manager Sir Oliver Humperdink on the last SWA card in Oklahoma City, OK (Card #574), by assaulting Don Muraco who was unceremoniously dumped from the rebuilding House of Humperdink. Here it was OMG taking on the popular Chief Omega of LOW All-Star Wrestling who brought his "A" game for this one. Omega did a great job battling OMG wearing him down with a sleeper hold and hitting a nice chop off the ropes for a near fall. OMG battled back strong, though, and after a bodyslam on the concrete floor he tossed Omega back inside and hit the 747 Splash to score the pin.
3) Lou Thesz defeated Danny Doring:
Taking a break from his torrid rivalry with "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers, Lou Thesz accepted this match against "Dastardly" Danny Doring of LOW All-Star Wrestling. It was quite an exhibition put on by Thesz as he outwrestled Doring from bell-to-bell. Thesz scored near falls with a Greco-Roman Backdrop and a released power bomb along the way. Doring showed some toughness kicking out there but eventually Thesz tied him up with the STF and followed with a Thesz Press to score the pin. Ring announcer Gary Michael Cappetta gave Thesz some good news post-match by informing him that he has been added to the upcoming 12-Man Gold Star Battle Royal at MSG (Card #585) where the winner will receive an LOW World Heavyweight title shot at WrestleCade VI.
4) LOW Junior Heavyweight title: J.D. Michaels defeated Red Bastien to win the title:
History was made in Hampton as former "Rat Pack" member J.D. Michaels defeated the "Flying Redhead" Red Bastien to win the LOW Junior Heavyweight title. It was the first championship victory for Michaels in LOW and it came at the expense of Bastien and Sharpe Sports Agency, Inc. whose founder and owner "Pretty Boy" Larry Sharpe was present at ringside. Sharpe offered up pre-match advice to Bastien who was able to control the early pace which included hitting a counter sunset flip for a near fall. Michaels caught an opening when he picked Bastien off the top rope and subsequently followed with a superplex for a near fall. Sharpe paced nervously at ringside as Bastien, the two-time defending champion, was in danger of being dethroned. Sharpe's worst fear became a reality as after a failed distraction by the manager it was Michaels catching Bastien with a powerful Flying Elbow Smash to score the pin. Michaels looked on in disbelief as the referee handed him the title belt which he clutched tightly celebrating his title win. Sharpe, meanwhile, chewed out Bastien as SSA, Inc. lost championship gold in what many would deem an upset win for Michaels.
5) Hillbilly Jim & Cousin Luke defeated Kevin Sullivan & Jimmy Jacobs:
A grudge match here as Hillbilly Jim & Cousin Luke took on the dark alliance of Kevin Sullivan & Jimmy Jacobs coming off Big Jim beating Sullivan in a PWI Invitational Cup Tournament Qualifying Match. Sullivan was beside himself looking to get back at Jim and that may have cost him in this one. Jim and Luke mounted a nice assault on Sullivan keeping him on the defensive throughout the early going. That included Luke connecting with the mule kick and Jim dropping him with a big clothesline. Jacobs paced frantically on the ring apron wanting in but Sullivan refused to tag him. He fought back aggressively against the Hillbilly cousins before being trapped in the Bearhug by Jim. Jacobs tried to make the save but Jim dropped Sullivan and ran both of their heads together. Luke jumped in and tossed Jacobs over the top rope as Jim caught a dazed Sullivan by surprise with a Roll-Up to score the pin. The crowd erupted in cheers as the popular Hillbillies got a big win while an angry Sullivan tore into Jacobs verbally somehow blaming him for the loss.
6) Midnight Express defeated Bob & Brad Armstrong by TKO:
This special challenge match saw the popular father-and-son team of "Bullet" Bob & Brad Armstrong take on the Midnight Express ("Loverboy" Dennis Condrey & "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton) coming off an attack by the Jim Cornette-led team on the last SWA card in Oklahoma City. It was on that show that Eaton made his surprise return from injury rejoining Condrey and Cornette in an explosive attack on both the Armstrong's and Paul London & Brian Kendrick interrupting their top contenders match. The three-time LOW World tag team champions sent out a strong message on that night and it was "Bullet" Bob and his son looking for a piece of revenge here. Conspicuous by his absence was Cornette who is said to have a big announcement on the upcoming edition of LOW All-Star Wrestling so the Express had to go it alone. It didn't seem to matter, though, as the two displayed the teamwork that has made them one of the top teams in all of LOW. They got the heat on Brad for an extended stretch scoring a big near fall with the Veg-O-Matic with Bob making a last second save. The "Bullet" got the hot tag and staged a nice comeback setting up a top rope flying bodypress by Brad on Eaton for a near fall. The latter stages of this one saw Brad take a hellacious beating capped off by the Double Goozle that left him in an unconscious state. The referee immediately called for the bell awarding a TKO decision to the Midnight Express as "Bullet" Bob tended to his son and stared down Eaton and Condrey as they left the ring.
7) PWI Invitational Cup Tournament Qualifying Match: Bobby Shane defeated Colt Cabana by DQ:
A controversial decision marred this one as the popular Colt "Boom Boom" Cabana took on the "King of Wrestling" Bobby Shane, accompanied by his manager "Elegant" Eddie Fyne, with the winner advancing to the prestigious tournament. Cabana literally dominated this one from bell-to-bell keeping Shane on the defensive and scoring a big near fall after hitting the Colt .45 with Fyne draping Shane's foot over the bottom rope to break up the count. He hit the Colt .45 a second time but again Fyne, wearing a cast on his broken wrist, got involved distracting the referee. Shane bailed out of the ring a number of times in this one and finally it was Cabana who had enough as he followed him out and ran him head first into the ring post. Shane was busted open and rendered a bloody mess but it was worth it as the move resulted in a snake eyes disqualification of Cabana. As Fyne tended to the fallen Shane, Cabana protested loudly to the referee who refused to change his decision allowing Shane to back his way into to the tournament at WrestleCade VI.
8) LOW International Heavyweight title: The Sheik© defeated Magnum T.A. to retain the title:
Virginia native Magnum T.A. had the crowd fully on his side here as he took on The Sheik, accompanied by his manager Abdullah Farouk, for the LOW International Heavyweight title. The popular Magnum went into this one looking to regain the belt he once held but The Sheik has proven to be a dominant albeit controversial champion. The Sheik used his trademark rulebreaking tactics in this one and it wasn't long before Magnum was rendered a bloody mess due to excessive usage of a sharp pencil-like object. Magnum battled back valiantly, though, and had The Sheik on the defensive using the sleeper hold, running forearm, and atomic drop. He also delivered a series of dropkicks to score a near fall. This one went out to the floor a few times and it was on the outside where The Sheik dropped Magnum groin first on top of the guard rail as Farouk got on the apron distracting the referee. With the official out of position, The Sheik tossed Magnum back inside and burned him with a Fireball as the crowd shrieked in horror. Magnum dropped to the mat clutching his burned and bloodied face as The Sheik covered him to score the pin retaining the title. LOW officials and medical personnel rushed to ringside to attend to Magnum as a jubilant Farouk handed the title belt to his "noble" Sheik.
(Notes: The paramedics were kept busy on this night as both Magnum T.A. and Phil Davis of the Heartbreak Express needed medical assistance following their respective matches. A bloodied and burned Magnum T.A. was not seriously injured but was visibly upset backstage following his controversial loss to LOW International Heavyweight champion The Sheik. He spoke to local reporters and said that Abdullah Farouk was directly responsible for helping The Sheik retained the title and vowed to pursue a rematch. Farouk, meanwhile, was overjoyed at what The Sheik accomplished and said that it would "be a cold day in hell" when Magnum gets a championship rematch let alone wins the title. As for Davis, he was bludgeoned with a barbed wire ax handle by Timber "The Insane Lumberjack" following the opener where the Heartbreak Express won by DQ over Timber and Necro Butcher. Doctors have advised Davis to take some time off and as a result on the next SWA card in Winston-Salem, NC (Card #586), it will be his brother "Superstar" Sean Davis facing Timber in a grudge match...J.D. Michaels surprised many as he defeated Red Bastien of the Sharpe Sports Agency, Inc. to become the new LOW Junior Heavyweight champion. The brash Canadian star, formerly of the "Rat Pack", proved that determination pays off as he captured his first championship in LOW. "Pretty Boy" Larry Sharpe was upset over the turn of events and seemed perturbed at Bastien for losing the title. It was a tough blow for SSA, Inc., as the organization looks to establish a strong foothold in LOW...The self professed “King of Wrestling” Bobby Shane scored a controversial disqualification win over Colt Cabana in their PWI Invitational Cup Tournament Qualifying Match. The win sends Shane to the tournament being held during WrestleCade VI weekend where he will face GWA star Angelo “King Kong” Mosca in the opening round...Lou Thesz received great news in that he has been added to the 12-Man Gold Star Battle Royal upcoming at MSG (Card #585) where the winner will go on to challenge for the LOW World Heavyweight title at WrestleCade VI. The field also includes freelance stars Bruiser Brody and "Ravishing" Rick Rude along with Bobo Brazil, Antonino Rocca, and Frank Gotch. Rumored to be added from the SWA are Thesz' main rival "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers and Magnum T.A. provided he is able to overcome the fireball attack by The Sheik...Jim Cornette was not in Hampton but the Midnight Express ("Loverboy" Dennis Condrey & "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton) didn't need his services as they scored an impressive TKO win over Bob & Brad Armstrong. Cornette was en route to Shreveport, LA, for an LOW All-Star Wrestling television taping (Card #581) where he is expected to make a big announcement involving his team and Express rivals Paul London & Brian Kendrick.)
