Thanks for the comments Crimson, Vegas, and Bookerbill. Next up is ROH action from Las Vegas and Vegas I hope you enjoyed the complimentary first row tickets and pre-show meet and greet with the Hoopla Hotties
Ring of Honor - Frank, Sammy, Dean, & The PWI Cup - Empire Ballroom - Las Vegas, NV (Card #770)
1) Young Bucks & Colt Cabana defeated Roderick Strong, Matt Taven, & Rhino by Count Out:
6-man tag team action opened things up as the Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) teamed up with the returning Colt “Boom Boom” Cabana to take on House of Truth members Roderick Strong, Matt Taven, & Rhino. The ever arrogant Truth Martini cut a pre-match promo vowing that Strong, who faces Roddy Piper in a PWI Invitational Cup Tournament Qualifying Match, will bring glory to the HOT by winning the event at WrestleCade VIII. Strong almost won this one quickly when he caught Matt in the Strong Hold but it was broken up in the ropes. Rhino proved a dominant force in this one but it was surprisingly the “Man Beast” who would cost his team the match. Late in the bout Cabana scored a near fall on Rhino with the Superman Sequence, where he slides through the legs into a pinning combination, and then Matt caught the “Man Beast” with a dive out of the ring. Rhino crashed hard into the barrier and was unable to beat the ten count back into the ring giving the Bucks and Cabana the victory much to the chagrin of Martini.
2) Michael Elgin defeated Mike Mondo:
A battle of former tag team partners saw the “Unbreakable” Michael Elgin take on “No Fear” Mike Mondo. They made it as far as getting a shot at the ROH tag team titles but then decided to amicably end their partnership. The two shook hands adhering to the Code of Honor to get things started before Mondo exploded hitting the jumping big boot and Mondo Facebuster for near falls. He had Elgin on the ropes until the powerful Canadian star hit a defensive brutal lariat. Elgin picked up the pace striking with the Rolling Deadlift German Suplex, Deadlift Power Bomb, and suplex into side slam. Elgin had to shake off a strong counter offensive from Mondo, including taking the No Fear DDT, before hitting the Spinning Sit-Out Power Bomb to score the pin.
3) Kings of Wrestling defeated Cedric Alexander & Caprice Coleman by Count Out:
A second count out decision on the card came as the popular C & C Wrestle Factory (Cedric Alexander & Caprice Coleman) took on the Kings of Wrestling (Claudio Castagnoli & Tyler Black, accompanied by Chris Hero). The new three-man KOW unit is proving to be a tough challenge and they dominated this one most of the way. As Hero offered vocal support from ringside, Castagnoli and Black poured it on from the opening bell. C & C Wrestle Factory caught a break when Black missed with the Phoenix Splash allowing them to briefly take over on offense. Castagnoli rallied the KOW back into it hitting the European Uppercut, giant swing, and the Ricola Bomb. Alexander was in a bad way when out on the floor he was nailed with a Rolling Elbow Smash by Hero as Black distracted the referee. The move knocked out Alexander and resulted in the count out victory for the KOW.
●A big commotion was caused following the tag team match as SWA star “A Double” Austin Aries walked in through the crowd and grabbed the mic. He directed his comments at Tyler Black who he is scheduled to face in a qualifying match in the PWI Invitational Cup Tournament (Card #774 in Philadelphia, PA). Black had to be held back by Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli as Aries promised to put him down and go to the tournament being held during WrestleCade VIII weekend. Aries also stated that he is currently in contract negotiations with the SWA and may opt out and come to ROH prompting a big cheer from the crowd. Aries then left the ring area as Black vaulted over the ropes and attempted to go after him but was again held back by Hero and Castagnoli.
4) Jay Lethal vs. Tim Donst was a DDQ:
A return grudge match saw Jay Lethal take on Tim Donst after Donst refused to adhere to the Code of Honor following their last match. The attempt to adhere to it here saw Donst jumped Lethal and launch him over the top rope with a belly to belly suplex. That set off a fast paced brawl that saw the two fight in and out of the ring. The turning point for Lethal came when he avoided a corner charge by Donst and took over hitting the Lethal Combination and Hail to the King. He also used the figure four leglock to keep Donst grounded. Donst battled back and hit the SDT for a big near fall. Another battle to the outside saw the match end in a double disqualification as both men knocked down the referee. They continued battling it out until ROH officials were able to pull them apart. An enraged Lethal challenged Donst to face him in a Fight Without Honor on the next ROH card in Santa Ana, CA (Card #780) a challenge which the former CHIKARA star accepted.
5) AJ Styles, Adam Cole, & Kyle O’Reilly defeated Kevin Steen, Steve Corino, & Jimmy Jacobs:
A big six-man tag team grudge match saw AJ Styles team up with Future Shock (Adam Cole & Kyle O’Reilly) to battle S.C.U.M. members ROH Heavyweight champion Kevin Steen, Steve Corino, & Jimmy Jacobs. During the ring introductions it was “The Prodigy” Mike Bennett, accompanied by Maria Kanellis and Brutal Bob, entering the ring. He grabbed the mic and said that ROH committed a “major injustice” by not giving him a title match in the City of Sin. He said that he should be the ROH Heavyweight champion and directed his attention towards Steen drawing a laugh from the reigning champion. As the tension mounted Maria and Brutal Bob ran for safety while Steen, Corino, and Jacobs jumped Bennett pounding away on him. Styles and Future Shock jumped in but instead of making the save they also pounded away on Bennett before all six-men combined to toss him over the top rope to big cheers from the crowd!
As for the match, Styles exploded on offense early and nearly pinned Steen after hitting a springboard 450 splash. The ROH Heavyweight champion was in a bad way until he rallied back and hit the F-Cinq on Cole for a big near fall which also set off a six-way brawl. The referee had a hard time gaining control of the action and this one almost got thrown out. O’Reilly turned the tide for his time and laid Steen out with a brainbuster. It wasn’t long after that when Cole came off of the top rope with the Flying Crossbody on Steen to score the pin. The crowd erupted in cheers as Cole scored a huge victory for his team. After the match it was Cole throwing down a challenge to Steen for an ROH Heavyweight title match on the next card in Santa Ana, CA (Card #780) which the champion accepted. Styles looked bewildered at the challenge made by Cole and left the ring as obviously he wanted another crack at the champion. Styles refused to adhere to the Code of Honor after his loss to Steen in a championship match in Baltimore, MD (Card #760) and now his reaction to Cole getting a title shot have left many wondering what his motives in ROH truly are.
6) PWI Invitational Cup Tournament Qualifying Match: Bob Roop defeated Cowboy Bob Orton to advance:
The qualifying round of the prestigious tournament continued as Cowboy Bob Orton (NWC) took on former Olympian Bob Roop (SWA) in a battle of two talented technical wrestlers. The two also have a past connection as Roop teamed up with Orton’s father, the legendary Bob Orton, Sr., for a time in the SWA. ROH was proud to host this match and it lived up to its advance billing. Late in the bout it was Orton scoring a big near fall with a piledriver. He also locked on a Texas Cloverleaf (ch) and the stepover toehold keeping Roop on the defensive. Roop struck back with the gutwrench backbreaker and nearly won it by submission with a reverse stepover toehold. This one ended on a defensive counter as Roop avoided a corner charge by Orton and caught him with a Roll-Up to score the pin. The two men shook hands after the match and the victory by Roop allows him to join the already qualified Antonino Rocca in the tournament which takes place the weekend of WrestleCade VIII.
7) Homicide defeated Necro Butcher:
This highly anticipated showdown between two of the most hardcore wrestlers in LOW, the “Notorious 187” Homicide and Necro Butcher, did not disappoint. Necro recently left the SWA to sign with ROH after making it known he wanted a piece of Homicide. It got off to a wild start as Necro caught Homicide with Choose Death, which is a sidewalk slam on top of two folded chairs placed back-to-back. He would hit the controversial move two more times during the match, narrowly avoiding a disqualification, but Homicide was able to kick out. Necro poured it on battering Homicide in and out of the ring leaving the Brooklyn, NY, native a bloody mess. It was not looking good for Homicide until he struck with a lariat and hit Da Gringo Killer for a big near fall. Homicide began showing signs of life and staged a great comeback here. It ended when he executed a top rope 187 followed up by a second dose of Da Gringo Killer to score the pin.
8) ROH tag team titles: Shelton Benjamin & Charlie Haas© defeated Mark & Jay Briscoe by DQ to retain the titles:
It was a night filled with technical decisions (disqualifications and count outs) so it was no surprise to see this one end up that way as Shelton Benjamin & Charlie Haas defended the ROH tag team titles against Mark & Jay Briscoe. These two rival teams have had some intense battles over the championship and this was no exception. It was all Benjamin and Haas early as they used quick tags and some double-team moves to control the pace. Benjamin scored a two count on Jay after hitting Paydirt and then he and Haas caught him with a double clothesline for another near fall. Mark got "Dem Boys" back into it and scored a two count on Benjamin with the Cut-Throat Driver. The battle then began raging out of control as the action went to the floor. Mark lost it as he pounded away on Benjamin and then tossed the referee over the guard rail resulting in a snake eyes disqualification decision. It didn’t end there as Jay took out Haas with a Jay Driller in the ring. He and Mark then took Benjamin down with a Double Football Tackle into the guard rail. That action resulted in Benjamin suffering a serious shoulder injury and he could be out of action for several ROH cards which brings into question the status of the tag team titles if he is unable to return in time for the next title defense. There are also possible actions to be taken by ROH against Mark Briscoe for assaulting the referee so it will be interesting to see what comes of that as well.
