Match Highlights:
A titanic main event highlighted a great night of action at WrestleCade 11 as Bruiser Brody, winner of the Gold Star Battle Royal, challenged Andre the Giant for the LOW World Heavyweight title before a record crowd at the Metrodome. Brody made his way out to Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin barking “Huss, Huss!” and swinging his chain but he was cut off in the aisle by the Army of Darkness (Kevin Sullivan, Lord Zoltan, BJ Whitmer, Blackwater & “The Punishment” Damien Martinez). Sullivan, who recently burned Brody with a fireball, baited him but he swung his chain taking out both Whitmer and Blackwater. The massive Martinez, however, jumped Brody from behind and executed South of Heaven, a sit-out chokeslam, on the concrete floor. LOW officials ran in and forced the Army of Darkness members to leave but the damage had been done. Andre the Giant, accompanied by his manager Bobby “The Brain” Heenan, made his way out and stepped on top of Brody on his way to the ring drawing jeers from the crowd. Heenan laughed at the fallen challenger before joining Andre. Brody managed to get back up to his feet and glared at both men before charging in with the chain causing Andre to bail out and Heenan to dive over the top rope to safety. The war was on and the bell hadn’t even rung yet to officially start the match.
Brody remarkably dominated the initial action and even managed to take Andre down with a piledriver. The crowd was at a fever pitch cheering Brody on hoping that he would both win the world title and end the vaunted undefeated streak of the champion. Andre battled back using a bearhug and then took it to the floor where both men traded blows. Heenan observed with caution knowing that any missteps by the champion could result in a huge win for Brody. Andre went for a dropkick late but Brody stepped out of the way. Brody homed in on Andre battering the champion into the corner. Things were not looking good for Andre until he suddenly thwarted a dropkick attempt by Brody and, after a turnbuckle squash, he flattened him with the Big Splash to score the pin. Just like that it was all over and Andre made a successful version three defense of the title. Jeers rained down as Andre and a jubilant Heenan celebrated his victory. Brody got a small measure of revenge by ramming their heads together resulting in Heenan being busted open and falling out of the ring. He then hammered away on Andre until driving him out of the ring as well drawing cheers from the crowd. Brody grabbed his chain and slammed it into the mat in frustration before storming off through the crowd.
In other championship action on the card, The Road Warriors became record nine-time LOW World tag team champions beating Steve Williams & Terry Gordy in a Steel Cage Match but they paid a heavy price for their win. It was an epic power struggle inside the steel with Williams ending up a bloody mess before all was said and done. Animal and Hawk worked like a well-muscled machine dominating for extended stretches. The finish saw Hawk get the better of Gordy after a double clothesline and then execute a Vertical Suplex and press for the pin. They barely had time to celebrate their win as the former champions tied Animal up in the ropes and went to work on Hawk injuring him as manager “Precious” Paul Ellering watched helplessly from ringside…Bobo Brazil nearly won the LOW International Heavyweight title from The Sheik but the defending champion, managed by Abdullah Farouk, managed to sneak away with a technical loss. Brazil was busted open but he survived the Camel Clutch by The Sheik and nearly pinned him with a Coco Butt. It went outside where The Sheik took advantage of the rules and attacked the bloody Brazil with several weapons resulting in the disqualification decision. It was the version two defense for The Sheik and there is no doubt that Brazil would like to obtain a rematch…and, “Sweet” Saraya Knight retained the SHIMMER title beating Heart of SHIMMER champion Sara Del Ray in a hard-fought battle. Knight wasn’t just satisfied with the win as she also injured SDR before a surprise run-in by former SHIMMER champion Jessicka Havok, the “Havok Death Machine”.
Bullet Club leader “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles can also call himself the ninth annual PWI Invitational Cup Tournament winner after his stunning win over Angelo “King Kong” Mosca. Manager J.J. Dillon accompanied Mosca to the ring and played a pivotal role throughout the heated battle. Both men were busted open during the match which featured some close near falls and submission chances. Styles hit the Styles Clash at one point but Dillon distracted the referee preventing a pin. He then hit a Pele Kick but Dillon again interfered and tossed his shoe to Mosca. That led to Mosca hitting Styles with the shoe and trapping him in the Sleeper Hold. It looked like Styles was going under when he managed to escape and rally back striking Mosca with a Discus Lariat to score the pin. PWI Editor Bill Apter was on hand to present the trophy to Styles who was also joined by fellow Bullet Club members Adam Cole and “Hangman” Adam Page. The victorious Styles grabbed the mic and vowed to turn his PWI Cup win into an LOW World Heavyweight title win in the new year.
John Tolos won an absolute war with Fred Blassie in their Dog Collar Match. The two rival stars from Pacific Coast Wrestling tore into each other with reckless abandon but it was Blassie that was rendered a bloody mess by the end. Tolos got hold of a lead pipe on the floor and crashed it over the head of Blassie and after that he hung him over the ropes with the chain. Blassie was done at that point and Tolos delivered the Flying Knee Drop for the pin…A battle of two favorite sons of Minnesota saw Curt Hennig get the win over “Ravishing” Rick Rude. It was a very competitive match that ended when Hennig foiled a backdrop and caught Rude with the Hennig Plex for the pin. Rude’s manager J.J. Dillon protested the decision claiming a fast count but the decision stood…Jim Cornette led the Midnight Express to a big win over the Midnight Rockers in a bout that nearly stole the show. The Rockers got a near fall on Bobby Eaton late with a Flapjack that had Cornette clutching his chest. The Express would ultimately hit the Midnight Massacre on Marty Jannetty for the win…Tommy Rich scored a pivotal win over the “Million $ Man” Ted Dibiase after countering interference by the bodyguard Virgil. Rich paid for it post-match when Dibiase and Virgil attacked and injured him…J.J. Dillon looked on proudly as Big John Studd avenged his upset loss to Scott Taylor beating him from pillar to post. Taylor showed some fight, even slipping out of the Backbreaker, before Studd left him for dead outside the ring resulting in a count out decision…World of Sport was well represented as Nigel McGuinness scored a one to nil victory over Zack Sabre Jr. in their six-round bout. The only fall came in the second round when McGuinness pinned Sabre Jr. with a Swinging Kick and Downward Lariat combo…and, a heated PCW rivalry opened the show with Jimmy Snuka & Tony Atlas winning by disqualification over Roddy Piper & Cowboy Bob Orton. Piper took a real beating in this one much to the delight of the crowd and ultimately got his team disqualified for using a chair on Snuka outside the ring.
Injury Report:
* Heart of SHIMMER champion Sara Del Ray suffered rib injuries when Saraya Knight refused to release the Bridled Rocking Horse and then slammed a chair into her ribs. Former SHIMMER champion Jessicka Havok made a surprise save for Del Ray and ran off Knight. Del Ray will be forced to miss the next SHIMMER card in Berwyn, IL (Card #1107) but Knight has been ordered to defend the belt in a rematch against Havok that night.
** Tommy Rich was injured by Ted Dibiase and Virgil after scoring a big win over the “Million $ Man”. Virgil hit Rich from behind with a chair allowing Dibiase to lock on the Cobra Clutch. Virgil added in some more chair shots to the ribs until LOW officials could break up the attack. Rich will miss at least the next CWA card with a neck injury.
*** Road Warrior Hawk also suffered a neck injury courtesy of Steve Williams & Terry Gordy after the Road Warriors won the LOW World tag team titles in the Steel Cage Match. Gordy and Williams tied Animal up in the ropes and executed a double Backdrop Driver on Hawk dumping him on top of his head. Hawk will be out of action for several weeks and Animal may have to use a substitute partner to defend the titles as per word from LOW Commissioner Charlie Cox.
