Match Highlights:
On a day when three major names signed contracts with the CWA, a capacity crowd of 14,500 jammed the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, NY, to witness AJ Styles defend the LOW World Heavyweight title against Angelo “King Kong” Mosca in the main event. Styles was at LOW offices in New York City earlier in the day where he officially had his contract transferred from the Kings Road United roster to the CWA. His match against Mosca was a rematch of the PWI Invitational Cup Tournament finals at WrestleCade 11 (Card #1100 in Minneapolis, MN) which Styles won. Styles dominated the initial action including trapping the challenger in the Calf Killer. It was a distraction by manager J.J. Dillon that helped Mosca turn it around and he blasted Styles with a running clothesline for a big near fall. Mosca also delivered a loaded Big Nasty Elbow Drop on the champion. Styles weathered the storm, however, and bounced back connecting with the Phenomenal DDT. Mosca was busted open late and was again saved by Dillon after a Pele Kick. Styles didn’t miss a beat and dropkicked Dillon off the ring apron before coming off the top rope with the Spiral Tap for the pin. It was a successful version seven defense of the title for Styles who evaded the bloody Mosca as he attempted a post-match attack.
Although the LOW World Heavyweight title eluded the camp of J.J. Dillon, the shrewd manager did pull off a real coup earlier in the night as he guided his team of “Ravishing” Rick Rude and “The Enforcer” C.W. Anderson into battle against Magnum T.A. & Curt Hennig. It was an explosive battle between the two teams, but it was some apparent miscommunication late that led to a shocking finish. During a battle outside the ring Rude pushed Magnum into Hennig making Hennig think that he was hit intentionally by his partner. Hennig took offense to it and shoved Magnum backward into a Rude Awakening by Rude. Hennig then tossed Magnum into the ring where Anderson blasted him with the Shotgun Superkick to score the pin. The crowd jeered the decision and those jeers grew louder as Dillon pulled an envelope out his jacket handing it to a smiling Hennig. Rude and Anderson then raised the arms of Hennig as Dillon applauded the scene. Adding insult to injury Hennig pulled up Magnum afterward and slapped him in the face before tossing him over the top rope to the floor much to the delight of Dillon, Rude and Anderson.
After fifty-six matches across forty-four shows the Real World Tag League tournament sponsored by Kings Road United came to an end with the final A and B Block matches being held. Drew Gulak & Anthony Nese, representing Evolve, claimed fifth place in the A Block by winning their match with The Sheepherders (Butch Miller & Luke Williams). It was a fantastic battle that featured multiple near falls, Miller being busted open and The Sheepherders getting disqualified for a brutal assault on the outside of the ring. Over in the B Block, the rising KRU team of Power Surge (William Forve & Paul Pope) claimed sole possession of second place over the Young Bucks as they defeated Golden Age Wrestling representatives Red Bastien & Billy Red Lyons, the Flying Redheads. Power Surge mounted an impressive comeback to win the match as Pope trapped Lyons in the Wristshotlock earning a submission victory. The tournament finals take place at the Seibu Dome in Seibu, Japan (Card #1150) with A Block winners Giant Baba & The Destroyer facing B Block winners Devastation Corporation (Max Smashmaster & Blaster McMassive) of CHIKARA.
Ring Angels champion Mildred Burke was fortunate to leave the building with her title as she survived a strong challenge from Tina Moretti. Burke survived the Jumping Facebuster three times along with a counter roll-up out of the corner before Moretti won the match via a count out. Burke retained the title in her version nine defense, but a title rematch has been ordered between the two women on a Golden Age Wrestling card in Detroit, MI (Card #1152)…Former LOW World tag team champions the Midnight Rockers (Stan Lane & Marty Jannetty) nearly shocked the world with a victory over Bobby “The Brain” Heenan’s devastating new tag team combination of Andre the Giant & Big John Studd. They used their speed and teamwork to frustrate their larger opponents and Jannetty nearly pinned Andre after blasting him with the Superkick. Andre and Studd wound up winning the bout but a post-match brawl led to a rematch being ordered between them on the next edition of LOW All-Star Wrestling (Card #1151)…and, hours after signing their official contracts with the CWA the Rock n’ Roll Express (Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson) made a successful in-ring debut beating the ASW pairing of “Pretty Boy” Larry Sharpe & Savage-T finishing things off with their trademark Double Dropkick.
