Match Highlights:
IWA Supercard of Honor 3 is in the books and an historic night of action ended with Jay Lethal making history as he became the first ever two-time IWA Heavyweight champion. Accompanied by his manager SoCal Val, Lethal surprisingly had the crowd on his side as he entered Fenway Park to take on defending champion Kevin Steen, otherwise known as “Wrestling’s Worst Nightmare”. Ring announcer Gavin Loudspeaker was primed and ready to announce the participants when Steen jumped out to ringside and grabbed his guitar which Loudspeaker had used to entertain the crowd before the event. Steen tried to use it on Lethal but it backfired and Lethal wound up breaking it over his head instead to a big pop from the crowd. Newly appointed IWA referee Todd Sinclair quickly called for the bell as Lethal tore into Steen. He wound up using both the Koji Clutch and Lethal Injection early, but Steen survived. Steen was busted open, though, and was in a bad way until he managed a counter and hit an impressive 450 Splash on the challenger early for a near fall. They fought to the outside several times and nearly ended in a double disqualification but IWA Commissioner David Marquez urged Sinclair to let the match continue. Steen impressively survived a second dose of Lethal Injection and the crowd along with SoCal Val gasped as the champion was proving hard to put away. Lethal had to really dig down unleashing virtually his entire arsenal of moves before a third Lethal Injection put Steen away for good. The crowd cheered the victory by Lethal who will no doubt have to deal with Steen again somewhere down the line.
More history was made in the semi-final match as Dem Boys, Mark & Jay Briscoe, regained the IWA tag team titles from the Kings of Wrestling, Chris Hero & Claudio Castagnoli, who were accompanied by Princess Kimberlee. This was a brutal bout that looked like it was going to be a successful version one title defense for KOW at one point. That is until Mark avoided a Loaded Rolling Elbow from Hero and made the tag. Jay exploded on offense battling both opponents down the stretch. He hit the Jay Driller on Hero for a big near fall that had the crowd on the edge of their seats ready to celebrate. With Mark battling Castagnoli on the floor, Kimberlee attempted to break up a second Jay Driller on Hero, but Jay released it and tossed her out of the ring. Hero then stumbled back to his feet right into another Jay Driller and that led to the pin. The crowd erupted in cheers as Dem Boys became two-time IWA tag team champions.
The torrid rivalry between IWA favorite “Lightning” Mike Quackenbush and free agent star “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert, which kicked off courtesy of a fireball by Gilbert on Quackenbush during King of Trios weekend, concluded with major ramifications. In order to get Gilbert to agree to the match after weeks of taunting, Quackenbush agreed to put up his ownership of the CHIKARA promotion against his better judgment. Gilbert had Quackenbush right where he wanted him and by the time the match was over it was “Hot Stuff” who would be celebrating. Quackenbush dominated most of the match but somehow Gilbert was able to survive both the Quackendriver and the Quackendriver III. Gilbert was in a desperate state late in the match, but he managed to execute an atomic drop followed by a DDT and pressed his feet on the ropes to score the pin. The crowd heavily jeered the decision as Gilbert rolled out of the ring high fiving his associate Larry Dallas. Quackenbush, meanwhile, sat dazed in center ring knowing that his life’s work had just fallen into the hands of his most hated rival. The future of CHIKARA is now in the hands of “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert!
The most incredible match of the night had to be the six-man Falls Count Anywhere match pitting Randy “Macho Man” Savage, Diamond Dallas Page & “Die Hard” Eddie Edwards against The Shield (Jon Moxley, Tyler Black & Drew Galloway). The underlying rivalry between Savage and Moxley was on display early as Savage nearly pinned him with the Flying Elbow Drop moments into the match. From there it was an all-out brawl which saw all six-man battling in various areas of Fenway Park much to the chagrin of stadium officials. It should be noted that IWA Commissioner David Marquez had three referees, headed up by Bryce Remsburg, assigned to the match to follow all the action. Some insane highlights included Edwards backdropping a charging Black right over the wall into the bullpen of the Boston Red Sox in right field. Over in left field an out of control Savage looked for a way to scale the famed Green Monster to potentially drop an elbow on Moxley but he wound up being pulled down by Galloway. Moxley also had his own daredevil moments including tackling DDP right down into the visitors’ dugout and covering him for a near fall. The finish of a brutal bout came in the ring as Black hit the Phoenix Splash on DDP for the pin giving The Shield a hard-fought win.
Tommaso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano were looking for revenge against “Big Nasty” Eric Watts & Jaka, accompanied by Ty Matthews, in a Tables Match. Ciampa was returning from injury after being put through a table by Watts and Jaka. It was not a good night for Ciampa, though, as he was busted open and wound up losing it for his team when Jaka put him through two stacked tables with a dive from the top rope. The bold Matthews afterward said that Watts and Jaka would be going after the IWA tag team titles…Paul London & Brian Kendrick scored a victory over reDRagon (Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly) winning in straight falls over their rivals in a 2-out-of-3 Falls match. Fish, who survived a Shooting Star Press by London in the second fall, got his team disqualified when he busted Kendrick open with repeated head first rams into the ring post…Two key singles bouts in the J-Crown division saw Chuck Taylor defeat former IWA J-Crown champion Will Ospreay while Austin Aries defeated Trent Barreta. Both matches were highly competitive and had the crowd at a fever pitch. Taylor vs. Ospreay ended when Taylor countered out of a brainbuster and hit a running big boot for the pin. Barreta pushed Aries to the limit, including surviving both the Brainbuster and 450 Splash, before a second Brainbuster by Aries resulted in the pin…IWA newcomer “The Bad Boy” Joey Janela, formerly of Combat Zone Wrestling, found himself $10,000 richer as he won a ten-man over-the-top rope Battle Royal. The crowd rallied behind underdog Cheeseburger, who eliminated both Fred Yehi and James “Main Event” Morgan, but Janela put a damper on that by eliminating him for the win. Janela reportedly spent all his cash partying after the show but those rumors are unsubstantiated…and, a wild opening tag team elimination match saw Eddie Kingston & Bryan Danielson defeat Pringle Dynasty members Lance Hoyt & Brodie Lee. After Hoyt was eliminated by Danielson, Lee did an excellent job in a one-on-two situation including scoring a series of near falls on Kingston. When Kingston fought back and hit the Sliding D, Pringle Dynasty manager Percy Pringle III went crazy interfering and arguing with the referee getting Lee disqualified. Pringle then took it a step further tearing up the ringside area including threatening an IWA official with the timekeeper’s hammer. IWA Commissioner David Marquez did not take kindly to Pringle’s actions and suspended him indefinitely to cheers from the crowd. The irate Pringle had to be dragged to the back by Lee as the crowd serenaded the manager with goodbye chants.
