Other than the SE card for Chaos in 2096, what other SE cards would you consider necessary? I'm going to start purchasing a few, but can't really make a decision because there is no artwork for them in the online store.

If you are going to get that Chaos SE, you might as well get the Alpha Force SE as well since they form a tag-team.
There was a list on the other forum of SE's & what they were about. I will see if I can find it & post it for you.

Alas, I can't find the listing. I will keep looking as I am pulling things off the other board before they get deleted. Hopefully I will find it for you.

Interestingly, I wouldn't even consider Chaos a "necessary" SE card. The only cards I consider necessary are the ones with noticeable changes to the back. The Alpha Force card qualifies, due to a subtle but profound change to the Alpha Force mechanic (at least, based on the versions of the cards I have). That means that Chaos, Bishop Hell (despite some kick-booty artwork), the Gladiators (ditto), and the first "round" of SE cards aren't strictly "necessary" (though they are very cool).
Besides Alpha Force, the first "necessary" card that comes to mind are the Maxine Babe and Massif referee cards, plus the one for Thakkur the Oppressor in 2099, though you could even make due without that one if you didn't mind making up your own matches for the Civil War series. The Commissioner Grogan and Qualitar's Talk Show cards are important, and the stat changes begin with Ram and Dark Justice in 2103.
Oh! The 2099 Colossus card has some stat changes thereon, but I think the original (art and stats alike) is superior.
All that said, the artwork on some of the "non-necessary" SE cards is a HUGE improvement over the original (Grunge, Pegasus, Bishop Hell), so if the card fronts are an issue for you, that should be a consideration.
Does that help?

yes, it does help quite a bit! i was completely unaware that the SE cards had different stats. I just thought that they were strictly updated artwork. thanks!
and thanks to Eliath for the effort as well. much appreciated!

Colossus, as well as his LOW counterpart Johnny Valiant, are "necessary" SE cards if you are not won over by their art the first time. Their SE art is in my opinion, far superior.

I still wasn't blown away by the Colossus though, but Valiant...very much so. The art is 100 times better. I could never tell that Carter version was even Johnny Valiant

Interesting--I thought the original Colossus art was much, much better than the SE art. But art is a subjective thing. However, I completely agree about Johnny Valiant.

I never used the Qualitar card (or the Johnny Rocket talk show, either), and I rarely used Thakur for his intended purpose (I gave him a distractor rating and used him as a manager sometimes). Massif and the commissioners are useful, but I could have gotten along without them. To me, the necessary special edition cards are the ones like Kati and Theater of Pain that you can't get as part of a card set. Those are the ones that have really made a difference in my feds. Maxine would fall into that category, too, so I'll agree on that one.

I'd forget for like 3 fight cards and would then remember about them and force myself to use them
