After Smackdown tonight, I walked across the street to the theater and saw "Rise of the Planet of the Apes."
It is a (non-exact) remake of the early 1970's "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" and it was really good and much better IMO than the original movie it is based upon.
I wore one of my Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG) shirts to this movie because it just seemed really appropriate.
James Franco does an OK job acting and Freida Pinto as his chick is hot as usual. But the real star is definitely without question Andy Serkis as Caesar! If there was an Oscar for the Summer, Serkis would have to win for the amazing job he does in this movie.
Some times major surprise moments in movies are given away in trailers. I have seen several different trailers for this movie over the past few months. But thankfully none of those trailers gave away the major surprise of what Caesar does after the primate keeper repeats the classic Charleston Heston line (from the very first Planet of the Apes movie in 1968) of "Take your paw off me, you damn dirty ape." Without giving anything away, I was caught off guard by Caesar's reaction and I loved it!
Word to the wise, stay during the credits as there is an important
story development scene played suggesting how the apes take over the planet (but I already guessed correctly earlier based on what happened to that lab worker.) The space shuttle in this movie is only mentioned briefly but I think (as probably anyone else does who knows the original Planet of the Apes storyline) that it is part of an upcoming sequel.
And after watching "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" tonight, I am really looking forward to that sequel!
