Without exaggerating, Rich was also the biggest wrestling star in the United States at the age of 20. That's not really a great recipe for long-term success. He was the #1 star (or co-#1 star, along with Wrestling II) in the only nationally-televised promotion in the country.
He actually had a lot in common with Jeff Hardy, if you think about it.
The NWA reign probably did more harm for him than good. The idea was supposed to give him a "rub" but Rich really came off as more of a fluke choker--the whole thing was ultimately counterproductive.
