Apparent suicide. Pretty shocking news to say the least. Similar fashion as Dave Duerson did to protect the brain so it could be analyzed.

This really sucks. He was one of the reasons I was a Chargers fan as a kid. RIP.

All the complaining about "turning football into ballet" aren't going to change the fact that the NFL is going to have to deal with some major, pivotal changes to how it operates both on and off the field. I don't know what those changes are going to be or what they should be. But the ongoing concussion issue just took a major step forward now that a probable HOFer is on the suicide list.

I’m amazed at how many people automatically assume that concussions had something to do with Seau killing himself. And the media isn’t helping by perpetuating that idea without any real evidence. We really don’t know why he did it. He may have just been depressed. But if that was the case, who would there be to point fingers at and blame?

I was going by the fact that Seau shot himself in the chest, which is a very strong indication (not proof...an indication) that he thought it was a concussion issue.

Ya, that's the media spin, I know. Or maybe he respected his family enough to give them an open coffin, even more likely imo. No one has ever successfully linked concussions directly to depression, they have connected it with being out of the spot light, irrelevant and not ever getting a multimillion dollar signing bonus again. The sadder truth is most sports athletes never learn to live without the game, and that can lead to depression, and that depression can lead to worse.

No one has ever successfully linked concussions directly to depression They haven't?There is zero evidence a concussion triggers suicidal thoughts. All that study, and all others like it prove is that a % of former athletes who have suffered concussions, also report having some kind of depression during their retirement. So do tons of people who never played in the NFL, or pro sports of any kind. This is a working theory, not a proven correlation at all. If concussions lead to depression, why is the depression only kicking in long after they retire? And not during their careers? Or following concussions suffered in pee wee, middle school, high school, or college? Seau played in the NFL for 15 years. Plenty of time to become depressed and suicidal if it were only from concussions. But he didn't. It happened long after, and it's been widely reported by other NFL players that Seau had great difficulties dealing with life after football.
