The Buzz: Miguel Cabrera won the Triple Crown and the Tigers are going to the playoffs. And yet it's really hard to enjoy because it's week 5, the Lions are on a bye week and they suck again. That's the local buzz.
The national buzz surrounds the Arizona Cardinals and tonight's game vs. the upstart Rams in prime time. The Cards are 4-0, looking to match a 2011 Lion-like 5-0 to start the season. Kevin Kolb is flying WAY under the radar with 7 TD throws (tied for 5th best in the NFL) to only 2 INT's (tied for 4th best overall in the NFL) in his first 4 games. But the real story is the Cards defense. Already with 6 forced fumbles, they are a top 3 defense going back to the last 6 or 7 games of last year. The Cards have won 11 of their last 13 games, beating the Rams twice last year both times by only a FG. The Rams have a new look defense but the same old look offense and Bradford is set to be blown to bits by the AZ-D. Unless Kolb implodes, Cards should move to 5-0 in another tight, hard-hitting game. IMO, the most intriguing game of the week.
BIGGEST WINNERS -
St. Louis Rams - Put on an absolute defensive CLINIC, with 9 sacks. This was what I expected the Cards D to do to Sam Bradford. The Rams still have light years to go on offense (maybe even a whole new QB to go along with a new RB) but the defense is awesome and young.
Indianapolis Colts - Awesome comeback by Luck. Wayne and the rest. Statement victory over the Packers, although I don't find it as huge of an upset as others seemingly do.
Chicago Bears -Da Bears are 4-1 despite all their major flaws. Roller coaster team with more ups and downs it seems.
Minnesota Vikings - As a Lions fan, seeing the Vikes rip the Titans really pisses me off. Who's better, the Bears or Vikes?
New England Patriots - Looking like the Pats of old. No other in my lifetime I've enjoyed watching more than the Pats. From the play calling, to the coaching to the execution, it's been a real joy as a sports fan to see MI man Tom Brady lead such an army. Pats are in Super Bowl form and it's only week 5.
BIGGEST LOSERS -
Detroit Lions - People are saying the Lions would be 3-1 if they had better special teams, but there's no guarantee the Titans and Vikes would not have scored a TD on those same drives anyways, had their KR's been stopped. With that said the defense is not giving up a lot of points despite the D-line going missing the last 3 weeks. The ST is a hot mess, but there are major issues on offense too. For a team who has dumped an absorbent amount of 1st and 2nd round picks into it's offense, this is beyond frustrating.
Green Bay Packers - Can we stop being so shocked every time Green Bay loses now? That's two in a row to rookie QB's. Who's more overrated, Rodgers or Clay Matthews? Now that he and the Pack aren't getting every call under the sun, and actually have to make plays to win, they aren't so elite, are they?
Washington Redskins - I admit I am having way too much fun rooting against IRG3. I liked him a lot in college, but he's made a fool out of himself in the pros. Sticking with my Big 12 bust prediction on Vick light.
Buffalo Bills - These guys suck. Mario Williams is the biggest free agent bust since Albert Haynesworth.
WASP TRAP LOCK OF THE WEEK: Going to stick with my opening theme, and take Dem Cards tonight over the hometown Horns in a tough NFC West slug-fest. I just don't see how the Rams offense will be able to do enough damage to score the 24 points they will need to win.
In an added WTLOTW (so to touch on more than a couple of games) I'll take the 1-2 Pittsburgh Steelers at home to beat the 3-1 Philadelphia Eagles. This is a nightmare match-up for Vick, who hates to be hit. I think the Steelers win 19-17 in a low scoring game dictated by the defenses.
FALSE and TRUE: 3-2 Burned by the Rams again, but the Steelers help me break even.
Added bonus BOLD ass prediction of the week: The Cards won't be the only unbeaten bird-themed team after week 5. ATL takes out RG3 and company to move to 5-0. The real question is does RG3 know what a legal NFL hit looks like now?
TRUE: 3-1 IRG3 is horrible. The Falcons are VERY good.
MNF Predictions - The Jets are a total mess. I'm not nearly as high on the Texans as everyone else, but the Jets are crumbling underneath Rex Ryan's fat mouth just like myself and many others predicted they would back when they were going to AFC title games. You simply cannot talk shit like that in the NFL. It ALWAYS comes back to bite you. Sticking with my prediction that if Rex is not fired this year (or leaves) he absolutely will not make it past next season. Will Tebow swoop in and save the team? No one believes that but no one will be able to look away once he is given the job. Texans win 31-17 and the announcers spend 95% of the game talking about Rex Ryan possibly replacing Mark Sanchez with Tim Tebow while the cameras casually return to game action in between panning to all three of them every 3 seconds.
current record: 3-0
