I think about the only time I won't is if there is a steel/cosmic cage match scheduled. The reasoning is that the time it would take to construct the cage, etc. But I always try to make sure the GWF/LWF Title is always the main event They just lower a cage over the ring in 2008, I imagine it's not going to get harder in the next 115 years.

While a portion of my booking is done show to show, sometimes there is a "master plan" behind the scenes. Often, if I want to build to a major match on, say card #50, I'll work backwards from that point and set up the building blocks on cards 40-49. There have been times when I knew 6-9 months ahead of time what I wanted my supercard main event to be. It's getting there that can be difficult. Same here, and like a couple have already said, the key to booking the big matches is having at least skeleton scenarios planned for all of the possible outcomes of the match.

Used to be, I would just book for a show. But lately, I've been planning a few things further ahead thanks to a heel commish (I love one-upping heel commishes either on their part or on the heroes) For instance, Iron Hand was doing his best to try and proteoct his boys, but managed to lose to Disaster in a Fight the Power match with the stipulation that if Disaster won, he'd get the commisioner power for one day and then gave Wolf and Rage and Paralyze title shots.

I try and set my next PPV card and work back from there to build the matches. Try mind you.

Card by card.
I know what big events i am going to hold but i don't pre-hype any of the matches as could change on the last previous card. Now if i run my feud night, we'll hell i can book it way in advance as Tom gives us the feuds...
I know i am going to introduce all of the new comers at my annual tournaments...i almost always run a BattleZone Fury...so with that in mind i have a general idea of the events so i can take the results and use them to the greatest advantage...but still card by card.
Every time i try to do something different, the dice get mad and blow it all to crap...

I definately like the idea some people use of working back from a PPV.. I might try that some time... seems like it could work pretty well.
Next topic: Protecting the champs
I used to be of a mind that non-title matches were bad news... what good's a champ that loses, right? I've since sorta changed my mind... doing so takes the champ more or less out of circulation, which doesn't seem right... Your champ is the 'face' of the company, so he should appear on most cards, right?
I do the WWE random main eventers in a tag match on occassion (though I don't like that so much) or do indeed run non-title matches at times.
Thoughts?

I don't use non-title matches. If there is going to be a change I let it go. In my mind, it builds the tension & the champ gets a return match. If the return match also has heat & the former champ regains the belt, there may be a third or fourth match. As for defenses, my Universal Title is defended at the very least at every Supercard. My secondary title is the Intergalactic Title & it is defended on every show. Great questions Wildfire!

I usually have a set schedule, or try to have a set schedule, of when the big champions make their defenses, so when there is a gap in between defenses I usually throw in non-title matches, I just make sure the opponent will either fit well as a contender should they win or won't have much probability of winning.
I usually don't like to 'protect' the champs per se, but I do hold them to a higher degree as all of the other wrestlers. For example, in my 2087 fed, if Thantos is champion, I will announce a #1 contender in the beginning of the month, and have Thantos cut promos and make appearances to build things to the supercard. But usually Thantos only wrestles on the supercard. That's it. It's not so much about protecting the champ, but more like making their appearance or being able to see them in the ring is more special than the other wrestlers.

They way you keep him in circulation is to use tag team bouts and interviews to keep the champ in the light. During the interviews it is when you have an incident (read: brawl) that, instead of a match, allows a conflict but no chance of losing a title. That's a very old school type of thing to do...along with feeding them jobbers.

I've never liked feeling the champ jobbers...every once in a while, they win.. and that's bad news.
Keeping them 'on camera' with non-match stuff works though, I definately think it's a good thing to make the champ's appearance in the ring special.
Hyde mentioned having a schedule for title defenses... I've actually been doing that more than I used to.. with my ACE, I'm bascially alternating between titles, so that each title (Singles and tag) is defended every two weeks.. that's a pretty big departure for me... I used to have title matches much more randomly... pretty much whenever I thought a contender deserved them.... thoughts?
