Card #507: Civic Coliseum in Knoxville
1) “Dastardly” Danny Doring and The Amish RoadKill got another victory over S.D. and S.T. Jones, this time by countout in the opener. Doring and RoadKill double teamed “Special Delivery” and kept him in the ring for the first five minutes of the match. They hit the Buggy Bang a few minutes in but “Soul Train” saved his partner. Doring later hit his solo Danaconda but “Philadelphia’s Favorite Son” kicked out. S.D. ducked a diving clothesline off the middle part of the top rope from “The Angry Amish Warrior” and made the hot tag to S.T. “Soul Train” ran wild on RoadKill but couldn’t keep the big man down. S.D. tagged back in and had RoadKill up against the ropes. He backed up and went for a big haymaker but RoadKill ducked and tossed S.D. over the top rope and to the arena floor. Doring jumped in the ring to get S.T.’s attention and distract him, while RoadKill went out to the ring apron and hit an Amish Splash to the floor. He rolled back into the ring, while Doring returned to their corner. S.T. saw his partner on the floor and went to check on him. Paul Morton’s count hit 10 and he awarded the bout to Doring and RoadKill after 10 minutes of action. **¾
2) “Pretty Boy” Larry Sharpe scored a quick pinfall victory over “Sodbuster” Jay Sharpe in about 90 seconds. Sharpe was aggressive against Jay from the start. Jay had some momentary offense but the New Jerseyan took control and sent Jay into the turnbuckle hard, then followed up with a big clothesline. He pulled Jay toward the center of the ring and executed the piledriver. He covered Jay and scored the pinfall. DUD
3) The House of Humperdink team of Ivan Koloff and Mr. Saito made short work of Ira Reese and Roy Rodgers. The new team kept Reese in the ring the entire bout. Saito got him down on the mat and hit a knee drop off the middle rope in the House of Humperdink’s corner. Saito went for a cover but pulled Reese’s shoulder up before the three-count and tagged to “The Russian Bear.” Saito sent Reese into the ropes and Koloff nailed him with the Russian Sickle on the rebound. He covered Reese and scored the pin in about 45 seconds, while Saito stopped Rodgers from a save. Sir Oliver Humperdink was very happy with his team’s win! DUD
4) King Kong Bundy scored an impressive pinfall on “Mr. USA” Tony Atlas. Bundy had the early advantage and went for a submission about 90 seconds into the match with a bear hug. With the fans on his side, Atlas powered out of the hold and then applied Bundy in a bear hug! It’s a rare sight to see the New Jersey giant in this hold and he started to weaken due to Atlas’ great strength. After about 30 seconds, Bundy broke the hold with a big right hand. The two powerhouses battled back and forth until Bundy nailed some more punches and then hit a big body slam. He immediately covered Atlas and scored the pinfall after about four minutes of action. Bundy made “The Mouth of The South” Jimmy Hart a happy man tonight! *
5) The Uptown Boys scored somewhat of an upset win over two-time former World Tag Team champions Doctor X and Billy Black Lyons! Tommy Rogers and Lyons started off the bout against each other. As the action picked up Rogers, took control and got Lyons down on the mat. Rogers tagged to Marty Jannetty, picked his own partner up in the air in a press slam-like position, and then dropped Jannetty into a splash onto Lyons! Jannetty immediately made a pin cover. Doctor X, who hadn’t tagged in legally, came in for a save but Rogers stopped him with a dropkick. The Uptown Boys scored the pinfall in about three minutes with X never entering the match! The Knoxville fans went wild at the huge tag team win! Several fan favorites, including the Armstrongs and “The Boogie Woogie Man” “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant came out and celebrated the win with the Uptown Boys! ¼*
6) Dan “The Beast” Severn defeated Colt “Boom Boom” Cabana by submission in a very competitive match-up. Cabana wanted to prove a point and show he was not intimidated by his more decorated opponent. The Chicago avoided an attack from Severn by rolling out of the ring. He then grabbed Severn’s leg from the outside, tripped him, and then slammed his leg on the ring apron! The Knoxville fans went wild for this! Cabana returned to the ring and applied the Chicago Crab but “The Beast” quickly got to the ropes. The two battled it out until Cabana regained control and executed the Colt .45. He went for a cover but the former World and Southern champion kicked out. Cabana continued his attack and went for a second Colt .45. Scott Bowden’s view was blocked by the wrestlers and he did not see Jim Cornette reach in and clip Cabana’s leg with the tennis racquet. Cabana dropped Severn but was not hurting and went after “The Louisville Slugger.” Cornette feigned innocence! The distraction allowed Severn to recover and he went right to work on “Boom Boom.” He took Cabana down to the mat and used a variety of submission tactics on him, including a heel hook. He blocked Cabana from making the ropes, and turned the move into a bow and arrow. Cabana was in the hold for nearly a minute but would not give. Severn finally transitioned into the waki gatame. Cabana fought hard for the ropes but finally had to tap out to save his own career and his body. Cabana put up a great fight against “The Beast” in this six-and-a-half minute match and you can bet that Cabana will want to see Severn or another one of Cornette’s men again! ***¾
7) Harley Race pinned “The Anarchist” Arik Cannon. Cannon came out tough, dying to get a win on the former Southern champion. He hit a Saito suplex and an exploder suplex. The PBR drinker attempted a swinging neckbreaker but Race blocked it and turned it into a back suplex. Cannon was hurt but got to his feet. Race recovered first, nailed him with a boot to the midsection, and then hit the piledriver to score the pin on Cannon in about three minutes. The First Family of Wrestling member Race is now 8-0 overall since returning to the USWA in March. ½*
8) In a battle of upcoming challengers for the USWA World Heavyweight title, Mad Dog Vachon scored another controversial pinfall over two-time former champion “The Boogie Woogie Man” “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant. This was a physical back-and-forth brawl between these two superstars. It seemed as if much of the match took place outside the ring as took place inside the ring! About six minutes into the bout, Valiant hit a neckbreaker for a near fall. Seeing Vachon in trouble, Doctor X and Billy Black Lyons appeared in the Civic Coliseum again and came to the ringside area. Valiant got Vachon down on the mat and hit the Boogie Woogie elbow. X jumped up on the ring apron and distracted Joe Wheeler, while Lyons snuck into the ring and dropped a knee to the back of “Handsome” Jimmy’s head. He then pulled Valiant off of Vachon, nailed him with a dropkick, and placed the Algerian brawler on top. Lyons then rolled out of the ring just as quickly as he had entered. Wheeler turned around and went to count but Valiant kicked out. Valiant went to the ropes for a breather but got nailed with a Mad Dog Pounce. Vachon pulled him off the ropes and tried for another pin but again Valiant kicked out. Vachon choked Valiant on the middle rope again. As Wheeler warned him about it and backed him off, X ran over and punched “Boogie Woogie.” Tony Atlas, recovered from his earlier bout, but still hurting from King Kong Bundy’s body slam and bear hug, came to ringside. He came up behind X and Lyons and delivered a noggin’ knocker! The two rulebreakers were dazed but had enough wherewithal to retreat to the locker room. “Mr. USA” followed them to make sure they stayed away! The bout continued with the advantage shifting several times. Vachon bit Valiant and busted him open. As “Boogie Woogie” stumbled around blinded by his own blood, Vachon rolled him up into a small package for a two-count. Vachon again choked “Handsome” Jimmy on the ropes and delivered another Mad Dog Pounce. He went for another Pounce but Valiant moved and Vachon got hung up in the ropes momentarily. Valiant got Vachon free and pounded away on him. Vachon retreated to a corner where his chain was. Valiant continued to pummel him until Wheeler had to warn him. As Valiant argued with Wheeler, Vachon wrapped the chain around his fist. Valiant shoved Wheeler out of the way to go after Vachon but got met with a punch with the chain! Valiant dropped to the mat and Wheeler turned around to see him on the mat but didn’t see the chain, as Vachon quickly had tossed it out of his sight. Vachon covered the knocked out Valiant and just for good measure put his feet on the middle rope for leverage and scored the pin after 16 minutes! The Knoxville fans were irate at the Algerian! Atlas came back out to check on Valiant and helped him to the back. ****
9) In the first title bout of the card, Ray “The Crippler” Stevens retained the USWA Mid-America Heavyweight title against former champion Luke Harper. This was another back-and-forth bout between these two brawlers. Stevens hit the piledriver a few minutes into the bout but Harper kicked out. Stevens landed the Bombs Away a few moments later but again the challenger kicked out at 2½. Stevens went up to the top a few moments later but Harper got to his feet, got to the corner, and slammed the champion off the top. Stevens rolled out of the ring for a breather but the big Nebraskan followed. He tossed “The Crippler” into the ring steps and then tossed him back into the ring. He hit a choke slam. Stevens rolled to the ropes to try and evade Harper but Harper grabbed him, whipped him into the ropes, and blasted him with the big boot. Stevens looked knocked out, as Harper went for the cover, but Jimmy Hart distracted Scott Bowden. Harper maintained control for a few minutes and knocked the champion out of the ring. Hart went to console Stevens but Harper ran off “The Mouth of The South.” Harper then charged Stevens but Stevens sidestepped him and executed a drop toehold sending Harper into the ring post. Harper was woozy and Stevens tossed him back into the ring. Stevens hit another piledriver for good measure and scored the pinfall to retain the title after 18 minutes. It was a good night for the First Family of Wrestling! ***½
10) The main event was for the USWA World Tag Team championship. The new champions The Heavenly Bodies put the titles on the line against Brad and Brian Armstrong. “The Doctor of Desire” Tom Prichard and “The Suicide Blonde” Chris Candido were coming off winning the belts from their rivals the Midnight Express 10 days earlier at Derby City Stampede in a Losers-Leave-Town Louisville Street Fight. The Armstrongs earned their title shot on the same supercard with a win over S.D. and S.T. Jones. They also had some momentum on their side coming off a big win over Candido and Dan “The Beast” Severn a few weeks ago in Jonesboro. Jim Cornette had stated on USWA Championship Wrestling that this card was going to be a “Heavenly Homecoming,” as it was in this same arena in March 2016 where he returned introducing the Bodies as his new team, along with Severn as his new bodyguard.
The new champions were aggressive in this one, not taking their challengers for granted, and keeping Brian in the ring for the first nine minutes of the bout. Prichard hit a jumping knee drop for a near fall. He tried to utilize an Armstrong specialty—the sleeperhold to put out Brian. Brian started to drop but with Brad and the Knoxville fans cheering him on, he fought to his feet and elbowed out of the hold. Dr. Tom stopped him from making a tag and tagged to his own partner. The Bodies executed the Prima Donna Plunge and went for the pin but Brian kicked out. Prichard was the legal man again a few minutes later when he busted open “The Road Dogg” open with the enzuigiri. Prichard went for a cover but Brian kicked out. Candido was in again and hit a running neckbreaker for another near fall. Prichard was legal again and knocked Brian into the Armstrongs’ corner with an elbow smash. Brian had enough wherewithal to make the hot tag to his brother and the Civic Coliseum erupted! Brad jumped in and blasted Prichard with a chop, knocking him down. Brad went for a cover immediately but Prichard kicked out. Brad maintained control and knocked “The Doctor of Desire” out of the ring. Brad followed, while Cornette distracted Paul Morton. Brad was cut off by Severn who took him down outside the ring and held him, while Candido came off the ring apron with a knee drop. “The Road Dogg” sprinted over to run off Cornette’s men. Prichard took control and tossed Brad back into the ring. Prichard hit the Dr. Tom Bomb for a near fall. Candido tagged back in and the Bodies hit the Flapjack. Prichard was the legal man a few moments later and missed an elbow drop. Brad rolled to the Armstrongs’ corner and tagged Brian. Brian hit a Hot Shot on Prichard. Brian continued his attack and slammed Prichard to the mat. He then executed Shake, Rattle, and Roll knee drop and went for a cover but Prichard kicked out. Brad tagged back in and he and Prichard slugged it out. Brad hit a big haymaker, which caused Prichard to fall back into him and the two wrestlers collided heads. Brad had his back to the ropes and he fell through the ropes and to the floor, while Prichard hit the mat. Morton put a count on both men. Brian went to check on his brother, while Prichard had enough strength to pull himself to the Bodies’ corner and get to his feet. Candido held on to him to ensure that Morton didn’t count him out. Brad was still on the floor, as Morton hit 10. Morton called for the bell and awarded the bout and belts via countout to the Bodies after an action-packed 18-minute bout. The fans were not happy about this outcome but Cornette was ecstatic about the “Heavenly Homecoming”! ****
