Pencil Neck Geek as the entrance music for Fred Blassie, I love it! Between that and Exotic Adrian Street's music, I'm in heaven with the sounds coming out of USWA events. Can we get some "Handsome" Jimmy music as well? Anyway this is no doubt one of my all-time favorite feds and I always look forward to reading the results.

Thanks to Crue Fan for the comments!Pencil Neck Geek as the entrance music for Fred Blassie, I love it! Between that and Exotic Adrian Street's music, I'm in heaven with the sounds coming out of USWA events. Can we get some "Handsome" Jimmy music as well? Read to the end of this post! August 8, 2016 Card #478: Toledo (OH) Sports Arena1) David Taylor was victorious in the opener by submission over “Leaping” Lanny Poffo. Poffo is known not only for his high-flying wrestling skills but also his poetry skills. He read a poem to the crowd that ended with what he claimed were facts: “The Toledo Mud Hens will go out and play ball while ‘Leaping’ Lanny shows he’s the great wrestling poet of all!” Poffo had a lot of offense against Taylor but the former Mid-America champion was ready to go toe-to-toe with him. Taylor hit the British suplex but Poffo got a shoulder up at two. Taylor took the bout to the floor and rammed “Leaping” Lanny’s head into the ring post. Poffo was almost counted out but managed to roll back in by nine. Taylor clamped on a sleeperhold in the center of the ring. Poffo started to drop so Jerry Calhoun checked his arm. It dropped three times, giving the British grappler the win. ½* 2) Brad and Brian Armstrong scored an impressive win over the Bolsheviks. Nikolai Volkoff sang the Russian National Anthem before the bout, which didn’t please the Toledo fans! That was the most action Volkoff would see, as the Armstrongs kept Boris in the ring the entire bout. Brad hit the Russian leg sweep on the Russian after a few minutes and scored the pinfall, while “The Road Dogg” stopped an interfering Volkoff with some punches. The Toledo fans gave the brothers a big ovation for their win! DUD ( NOTE: This was my first time using Zhukov’s color card, available through Promoter Prime!) 3) Angelo Poffo pinned George “The Animal” Steele in a wild brawl. Poffo was fired up in this one, not being intimidated by “The Animal’s” tactics and wanting to send a message to Abdullah Farouk and BTW U.S. Heavyweight champion the Sheik. A few minutes into the bout, Poffo snapped Steele’s neck on the top rope and went for a pinfall. Farouk reached in and pulled BTW referee Tiger Tasker by the leg to interrupt the count. Knowing the importance of the match, Tasker ordered Farouk back to the locker room for the duration of the match, which drew a big pop from the crowd! Steele was irate and as he went after Tasker. In the confusion, Poffo rolled him up from behind with a reverse rolling cradle for a near fall. Steele gained control and hit a running knee to score a two-count on Poffo. Steele went to one corner and ripped off the turnbuckle pad, exposing the metal. Tasker warned Steele about using the metal, as “The Animal” tossed the stuffing at Poffo and Tasker. Poffo got to his feet and attempted to whip Steele into a different corner. Steele reversed the whip and sent Poffo crashing into Tasker, which caused Tasker to hit back-first into the exposed metal. Tasker was in a lot of pain and lay on the mat while Poffo and Steele continued to brawl. Poffo blasted Steele with a running stomp, busting open “The Animal.” Poffo hit a running knee lift and went for a cover but Tasker was still hurting. Several USWA and BTW officials ran down to help Tasker to the back, while BTW referee Hal Lite took over for Tasker. (He ended up taking Tasker’s matches for the rest of the night.) Poffo nailed Steele with a second knee lift as Lite entered the ring and made another cover. Lite dropped down and counted the pinfall. The fans popped big for Poffo’s win in this wild match! ***¼ 4) The BTW ring crew quickly replaced the turnbuckle that Steele had exposed before the next match. “Wild” Bull Curry won a short but wild brawl over “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan. The two brutes slugged it out in the first minute. Duggan got the upper hand and sent Curry out of the ring with a clothesline. While Jerry Calhoun kept Duggan in the ring, Curry slipped on some brass knuckles. He returned to the ring and punches Duggan with the knucks out of nowhere. He covered “Hacksaw” and scored the pinfall in just a few minutes. While Calhoun didn’t see the knuckles, the fans did and were outraged! ¼* 5) “Mr. USA” Tony Atlas defeated Bobby Shane in a hard-fought match-up. Shane was aggressive at the start, hoping to score a big won on Atlas. He hit a bulldog for a near fall in the first few minutes. He went for the Japanese sleeper early but Atlas powered out before Shane could fully apply the sleeper. Atlas took control for a few minutes and came off the top rope with a jumping head butt to Shane, who was standing. Shane was ready for the attack and moved out of the way, causing the powerhouse to crash hard. Shane was on the attack and went up to the top rope himself. Before he could leap, Atlas got to the ropes, shook the top rope, and caused Shane to get crotched on the ropes! Atlas then knocked Shane off the top with an amazing dropkick, sending him to the floor. Shane was almost counted out but with Jimmy Hart yelling encouragement through the megaphone, rolled back in by nine. Atlas came off the top again with the jumping head butt and this time nailed it successfully, so much, that Shane was busted open. Shane capitalized on a mistake by “Mr. USA” a few minutes later and locked on the Japanese sleeper. BTW referee Al Worshoski checked Atlas’ arm and it dropped twice but popped back up on the third attempt. Atlas powered to his feet and powered out of the hold. He then took over on Shane. He wore him down and then lifted him up for the press slam. He slammed Shane hard and then checked to see where Hart was, knowing what Hart did to him in his World title match at Independence Day Bash. He bounced off the ropes and hit the splash to score the pin. As Worshoski raised Atlas’ arm, “Mr. USA” stared down “The Mouth of The South” and indicated he wants another shot at “Ravishing” Rick Rude and the gold. (This was only Shane’s second pinfall loss in the USWA since his debut in January.) ***¾ 6) Chris Candido had a successful return from injury, as he and Dr. Tom Prichard won a Triangle Match over the Midnight Express and Brian Kendrick and Paul London to earn a shot at Larry Zbyszko and Mr. Saito’s USWA World Tag Team championship in next week’s main event at the Mid-South Coliseum. Dan “The Beast” Severn did his job of being Jim Cornette’s bodyguard but was sporting his wrestling gear for his later BTW U.S. Heavyweight championship bout against the Sheik. Brian Kendrick took a lot of punishment in the first fall from both the Heavenly Bodies and the Midnights. “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton drove Kendrick’s face into the mat and busted him open with a Divorce Court. The Bodies executed a Flapjack on him and Prichard followed up with the enzuigiri to eliminate him and London. London had attempted a save but was stopped short by “The Suicide Blonde.” Former partners Prichard and “Sweet” Stan Lane started the next fall as the legal men. Lane took control and tagged to Eaton. The Midnights hit a great combo, where Lane executed a drop toehold on Prichard and Eaton followed up with an elbow drop. Eaton took Dr. Tom to the floor and executed a bulldog on the Sports Arena floor! It looked like Prichard might get counted out but with Candido and Severn’s help, got back into the ring by nine. Inside the ring, Eaton hit the Alabama Jam and went for a cover but Prichard kicked out. Lane tagged back in and again knocked Prichard out of the ring. Cornette distracted Hal Lite, while Severn brought Prichard the tennis racquet. Lane reached through the ropes but Prichard nailed him with the racquet. “The Doctor of Desire” returned to the ring and blasted Lane with the enzuigiri. He went for a pin but Lane kicked out. Prichard tagged to Candido, who continued the attack on Lane. Prichard tagged back in a few moments later and the Bodies executed the Prima Donna Plunge on “Sweet” Stan. Prichard made the cover, while Candido stopped an intervening “Beautiful” Bobby, and scored the pinfall. The Bodies scored another impressive win and earned their first shot at the World Tag Team titles! Cornette’s charges got one win tonight. Would Severn take the U.S. title back to the South? ( Read on!) ***½ 7) Mid-America Heavyweight champion Tommy Rogers made a clean sweep of his three-match series, with a pinfall on Bobby Fulton. Both men again started the bout with a handshake. While both men were cheered, Fulton had a few more cheers from the Toledo fans. The two exchanged some great mat holds once again in the first few minutes. The action picked up and Fulton took control. He looked like he would get a win on Rogers. He sent Rogers into the ropes and bent over for a back body drop. Rogers surprised him with a sunset flip and scored the pinfall after about eight minutes of action. After the bell, Fulton realized he had capitalized the backdrop and complimented Rogers on his ring awareness. Rogers offered his hand again and Fulton accepted, as the fans gave both wrestlers a big ovation! *½ 8) In the first of three title bouts, the Fabulous Kangaroos took a brutal beating but managed to come back and defeat John and Chris Tolos to retain the BTW World Tag Team titles in an amazing match! The Greek brothers were very adept at double teaming tonight. They kept Al Costello in the ring for the first few minutes. John hit his flying knee drop off the second rope and went for a cover but Costello kicked out. Roy Heffernan tagged in against Chris and went for the stepover toehold. Chris managed to grab the ropes for the break. Costello tagged back in and the Aussies hit the Boomerang. Costello went for a cover but John saved his brother. Chris recovered and tagged to John. John used the corkscrew (a submission move where he grinds his knuckles into his opponent’s temple). He ground into Costello’s temple so brutally that he drew blood. He held on the move for over a minute but Costello finally got to the ropes for a break. Costello tagged back to Heffernan but the Toloses cut him off initially. John blasted Heffernan with a thumb to the throat and went for a pin but Heffernan kicked out. Heffernan worked on John’s leg and tagged to Costello who went for the Marble Bor Leglock. John scrambled to the ropes for a break. Heffernan tagged back in and the champs hit a second Boomerang. Heffernan made a cover but John kicked out at 2¾. John battled back and used the corkscrew again. Heffernan got to the ropes but was near the Toloses’ corner. Chris tagged in and worked over Heffernan for several minutes. He tagged back to John, who held Heffernan down while Chris came off the second rope with his flying knee drop. The knee landed right across Heffernan’s face and he was now bleeding, like Costello. John went for a cover but Heffernan kicked out. After a pummeling in the corner by the Toloses, John went for another corkscrew. Heffernan was bleeding profusely and started to drop to the mat. Al Worshoski checked Heffernan’s arm. It dropped twice and as Worshoski checked for the third time, “Wild” Red Berry, who had been uncharacteristically inactive for much of the match, jumped up on the apron and acted like he was going to enter the ring. Worshoski turned his attention to the manager and missed Heffernan’s arm dropping for the third time! Fans were outraged by this, hoping to see the titles change. The Toloses protested but to no avail. John hit a second flying knee drop and went for a cover but Costello came in with a boot to the head to break up the pin. John was dazed but managed to tag Chris. Chris attacked Heffernan but he surprised him with a Kangaroo Kick out of nowhere, then made the tag to Costello. Costello worked over Chris and then hit an Aussie suplex. He made a cover and scored the three-count, while Heffernan knocked down John with a Kangaroo Kick. The ‘Roos won the match and retained the titles after 26 minutes of amazing action! ***** ( NOTE: Costello had seven fatigue tokens, Heffernan had nine, John had four, and Chris had two. An awesome match!) 9) In the first of two main events, the Sheik, managed by Abdullah Farouk, put the BTW United States Heavyweight title on the line against Dan “The Beast” Severn, accompanied by his manager and employer Jim Cornette. These two had a history in the USWA dating back to 2007 when Severn became the first man to decisively beat the Syrian madman in a one-on-one bout. The Toledo fans were definitely supporting Severn tonight, despite Cornette being his manager, due to his time in BTW in the past and being from nearby Michigan. “The Beast” had the initial advantage. He went for a head and arm throw a few minutes into the bout, which is how he pinned Sheik in Abilene, TX nine years ago to win the Southern title. Sheik had the move scouted and slipped out of it before the challenger could throw him. Sheik rolled out of the ring for a breather. Abdullah Farouk distracted Hal Lite, while Sheik pulled out his sharp object and jabbed Severn in the face from outside the ring. He returned to the ring and applied the Camel Clutch for over a minute. Severn managed to pull himself to the ropes for a break but Sheik continued his onslaught, pulling out the object again and carving Severn open, causing him to bleed. Sheik locked on the Camel Clutch in the center of the ring. Sheik held it on for another minute, slipping in the object to “The Beast’s” face when he could. Cornette, not wanting his bodyguard to suffer severe injury, had had enough and entered the ring. He bravely (?) smacked the Syrian madman in the back with his tennis racquet, right in front of Lite. Lite was left with no choice but to call for the bell and disqualify Severn after about six minutes of action. Farouk entered the ring but Cornette nailed him with the racquet as well, which drew a big cheer from the Toledo fans. The U.S. champion recovered and charged “The Louisville Slugger.” He grabbed Cornette and was ready to carve him up until the Heavenly Bodies made their way to the ring and ran off the champion. Severn had recovered and started tossing steel chairs up the aisle trying to strike the fleeing Sheik and Abdullah! ¾* 10) The second half of the double main event was a huge rematch for the USWA World Heavyweight championship. Current, two-time, and longest-reigning champion “Ravishing” Rick Rude, currently sitting at 20 defenses of the titles, put the title on the line against “The Boogie Woogie Man” “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant. The last time these two met, in Jonesboro in June, Rude lost via disqualification when he used his flexing bar on “The Boy from New York City.” Their battles date back to 2014. While Rude has won more of their bouts, Valiant came close in many of those losses to the win but the interference of “The Mouth of The South” Jimmy Hart turned the tide for the “Ravishing One.” Fans were buzzing for this one as the bell rang. The champion came out strong attacking the challenger with punches and forearms. He hit a piledriver early in the bout but only got a two-count. Valiant surprised Rude with an ear clap, knocking Rude down. Valiant went for a cover but the World champ kicked out. Valiant went up to the top rope and hit a flying body press for another near fall. Rude took control and came off the top himself, hitting a sledge to score another two-count. Valiant surprised Rude with a running elbow smash, knocking him down. He followed up with the Boogie Woogie elbow, which drew a huge pop from the crowd. Before Valiant could cover, Hart was on the apron distracting Jerry Calhoun. Valiant remained in control and a moment later, hit another elbow, this time landing across Rude’s face and busting him open. As Valiant went for the cover, Hart got up on the apron and tossed in the megaphone behind Calhoun’s back. As Calhoun went to deal with “The Mouth of The South,” Valiant went to attack Hart. Before he could strike, Rude had scooped up the megaphone and nailed Valiant in the back of the head with it. Rude tossed out the megaphone and then fell on Valiant for a cover. Valiant got his shoulder up at 2¾, which electrified the crowd. Rude and Hart were in shock! Rude attacked the challenger but Valiant fought back with stiff punches of his own. He had the champ rocking-and-reeling. He whipped Rude into the ropes and then caught him on the rebound with the sleeper, which is how he beat Rude in Jonesboro back in October 2014. Hart was in a panic and waved to the back. Bobby Shane came down the aisleway with a steel chair. But before he could reach the ring, his opponent from earlier, “Mr. USA” Tony Atlas cut him off with a clothesline from behind. Atlas picked up Shane and held him in a full nelson, facing the ring, so he could see what was happening to Rude! A bloodied Rude had fought for the ropes but Valiant kept him in the center. Rude dropped to the mat and was fading. Calhoun checked Rude’s arm and it dropped three times. Calhoun called for the bell and the submission after 10 minutes of action. Jimmy Valiant won his first USWA World title and had ended Rude’s 19½ month reign as champ! The Toledo Sports Arena erupted as “The Boy from New York City” started to blare over the speakers! Atlas joined Valiant in the ring, as well as “Superstar” Bill Dundee, who was a surprise, since he was not booked to wrestle on the card. Other USWA fan favorites on the card entered the ring as well and lifted Valiant up on their shoulders! (Not only did Valiant end Rude’s historical reign but he also joins an elite and eclectic group of wrestlers who have held the USWA World Heavyweight, World Tag Team, and Southern Heavyweight titles: the “Intelligent, Sensational” Destroyer, Frank Gotch, Johnny Valentine, and Curt Hennig!) ***½

Something amusing about the Russians losing to the Russian Leg Sweep. Wow, huge win by Handsome Boogie Woogie Jimmy valiant. That was amazing. Combine that with an awesome Kangaroos/Tolos Bros. match and a shockingly good Steele/Poffo match and you have one amazing card.

Jimmy Valiant wins the USWA World title from Rick Rude! The roof must have blown off the Toledo Sports Arena. Rude had an awesome run but I'm looking forward to a "Boogie Woogie Man" title reign, not to mention his entrance music coming in to play! "Handsome" Jimmy is going back to "Mempho" as the world champ! I also really enjoyed the tie-in with Big Time Wrestling as both of those title bouts were a lot of fun. The Kangaroos vs. Hamilton Wrecking Crew was epic.

Thanks to Troy and Crue Fan for the comments!
Hope everyone is having a great Labor Day weekend! After a historic joint card with BTW at the Toledo Sports Arena, USWA Championship Wrestling on August 13 was full of news! • Footage aired from the locker room of the Toledo Sports Arena of “The Boogie Woogie Man” “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant celebrating his USWA World Heavyweight title win from last week. The fan favorites who had carried Valiant around the ring were there to celebrate with him, as Lance Russell tried to get a word. Valiant thanked his fans, his “street people” from Toledo, Memphis, Louisville, Jonesboro, and all of the USWA cities. He said he was in the USWA at the beginning and while he hasn’t been in the territory all of that time, his goal was to win this belt and thanks to the fans and these great wrestlers (pointing especially to “Superstar” Bill Dundee and “Mr. USA” Tony Atlas) that he was able to achieve his dream. He said no matter how long he is champion; he will be the “street people’s champion” forever! • Commissioner Bob Armstrong announced that the rematch of this huge World Heavyweight title bout will take place on September 5—Labor Day. Valiant will put the title on the line against the man he beat, two-time former and longest-reigning champion “Ravishing” Rick Rude! This bout will be the main event at the Civic Coliseum in Knoxville. Rude and “The Mouth of The South” Jimmy Hart were interviewed in the WMC-TV Studios. Hart once again protested that this bout should not have been a title bout, as this was not a USWA card. Rude also mentioned that he was beaten with an illegal move. Lance Russell asked him what he meant. Rude said that “Boogie Woogie” used an illegal choke and Jerry Calhoun called it a sleeper! Russell said that that was ridiculous; that it was a legal sleeper Valiant has used to get many victories in the past! Hart called the title change a “conspiracy” by the USWA because they were jealous of Rude’s long reign. Rude said if he has to become a three-time champ and “embarrass” “’Ugly’” Jimmy again, he will do that! • The commissioner also announced more matches for next week’s card at the Louisville Gardens: o The main event of Independence Day Bash 2016 will take place once again, as two-time former World Heavyweight champion “Ravishing” Rick Rude will face “Mr. USA” Tony Atlas! Their World title bout at Chilhowee Park saw Rude retain the title quickly when Jimmy Hart interfered and hit Atlas in the leg with the megaphone as he was going for the splash after the press slam. Atlas is coming off a big win over Rude’s First Family of Wrestling ally Bobby Shane in Toledo and is out to gain revenge on Rude and Hart for the controversial win at the Bash! o The Heavenly Bodies will be looking to avenge the only blemish on their win-loss record so far in the USWA, as they go two-on-two with Brian Kendrick and Paul London! Tom Prichard and Chris Candido have yet to lose a match via pinfall or submission, however, Kendrick and London scored a countout victory on them in May in Memphis after a series of dives outside the ring, which made Jim Cornette nearly have a heart attack! Depending on the outcome of this coming week’s main event in Memphis ( See Card #479 preview below.), the Bodies could go into this bout as the new USWA World Tag Team champions! o The “superstars” will collide again, as “Superstar” Bill Dundee battles Superstar Bundy! Dundee and the new World champion “The Boogie Woogie Man” “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant finally got a tag team win over Bundy and Big John Studd last month in Lexington. Dundee has beaten Bundy in both of their singles meetings despite the New Jersey giant trying to mock the Australian by adopting his nickname and jumpsuit! o “Exotic” Adrian Street will have his toughest bout to date when he faces former Mid-America champion and fellow British grappler David Taylor! Taylor issued the challenge for the bout after Street’s latest music video aired. ( See recap below.) He said that Street’s antics are an embarrassment to the queen and to the entire British Isles and he wants to prove to Street what a real British wrestler is! Street, flanked by Jim Cornette and Dan “The Beast” Severn (with many bandages on his face, thanks to the Sheik’s sharp object), accepted the challenge later in the show. He told Taylor and the USWA fans not to be fooled by his appearance; like his song states, he is very happy breakin’ bones! • This week’s music video from the “Exotic One” was “Sadist in Sequins”! • Some interviews were sent in from BTW from some of their wrestlers about the huge joint card in Toledo last week! o Bobby Fulton congratulated Tommy Rogers on his clean sweep of their series. He said that Rogers is a fantastic wrestler and a stand-up human being. He said that he hopes to cross paths with him in the future and he wished him well on his Mid-America title bout next week, as well as all his future matches! o John Tolos was interviewed by Lord Athol Layton in the WXYZ Studios. Tolos said that his brother Chris suffered a minor back injury in their World Tag Team title bout with the Fabulous Kangaroos but will only miss a few weeks of action. He said that the Toloses’ “domination” of the champs should earn them a rematch for the BTW World Tag Team titles. He admitted that the ‘Roos got the better of them in Toledo but the next time they meet the Aussies will learn that wrestling is spelled T-O-L-O-S! o The ‘Roos and their manager “Wild” Red Berry responded with an interview also from the studios, stating that the Tolos Brothers can make all the excuses they want but that the champions proved that tag team wrestling was invented in Australia! Berry stated that if the Toloses want another loss, the Kangaroos would be happy to give them one! The USWA returns home to Memphis and the Mid-South Coliseum on August 15!• A big tag team bout will see Doctor X and Billy Black Lyons collide with Brian Kendrick and Paul London. It’s the mat wrestling and submission skills of X and Lyons against the high-flying attacks of Kendrick and London. Which style will prevail? • Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy will collide once again with Mad Dog Vachon! These two have been part of the war between their respective units. Give Gordy credit on signing this match when he’s got his shot at “Classy” Freddie Blassie’s Southern Heavyweight title in next week’s main event at the Louisville Gardens. Vachon would love not only to defeat and injure Gordy but also get himself another shot at the Southern title or any USWA singles championship. Who will leave the Mid-South Coliseum victorious? • “The Gamesmaster” Kevin Sullivan has made a big impact in a short time in the USWA. This week he will take on the high-flying Red Bastien! Bastien is out for revenge for the neck injury that Sullivan and the World Tag Team champions Larry Zbyszko and Mr. Saito caused to Nick Bockwinkel at Independence Day Bash. Can Bastien give Sullivan his first loss or will the diabolical “Gamesmaster” triumph again? • In the first of two championship match-ups, Tommy Rogers will defend the USWA Mid-America Heavyweight championship against former champion “The Belfast Bruiser” Fit Finlay! Rogers won the title from Finlay in somewhat of an upset in May in Cookeville. Finlay appeared to be close to regaining the title at the Bash at Chilhowee Park until Ray “The Crippler” Stevens intervened, getting Rogers disqualified. Rogers is coming off a hot sweep of Bobby Fulton in their three-match series in Ohio and Michigan. Can the champion keep up this momentum or will the Irish brawler regain the gold? • The main event will be a first-time meeting of two rulebreaking tag teams. The current and two-time USWA World Tag Team champions Larry Zbyszko and Mr. Saito of the House of Humperdink will defend the titles against the Heavenly Bodies, managed by Jim Cornette. Tom Prichard and Chris Candido earned their shot with their win in the Triangle Match last week in Toledo. They have been a very impressive team since uniting and returning to the USWA in March in Knoxville. Prichard is a five-time former World Tag Team champion. Candido is a former Texas champion but has never held the Tag Team gold. He only received one shot at the titles, which was seven years ago, almost to the day, when he and Buff Bagwell lost to champions Magnificent Muraco and Greg “The Hammer” Valentine. Zbyszko and Saito continue to be a dominant duo and always seem to have a plan for any type of opponents. Cornette and Sir Oliver Humperdink were interviewed together in the WMC-TV Studios on Championship Wrestling. Both said they had respect for the other man as a manager and that they would be “gentlemen” and not interfere for their teams. However, when rulebreaking managers are across the ring from each other, especially in title bouts, that never seems to hold true. Can the Bodies keep up their winning ways and become new champions or will Zbyszko and Saito’s reign continue? All these bouts, plus a tag team rematch between Brad and Brian Armstrong and “Dastardly” Danny Doring and the Amish RoadKill! As well as Billy Gunn in singles action, the Patriot, “Exotic” Adrian Street, and the One Man Gang!

August 15, 2016 Card #479: Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis
1) Billy Gunn got a countout victory over “The Unpredictable” Johnny Rodz in the opener. Rodz tried to use his unpredictable, sneaky tactics and score a pin with a schoolboy roll-up using the tights but Gunn kicked out. Gunn battled back and knocked Rodz over the top rope with a powerful clothesline. Rodz was unable to get back in by Paul Morton’s count. While Gunn got the win, it was probably not the type he would have preferred. DUD
2) The One Man Gang put Hillbilly Jim down for the count. Jim had some offense early on and looked like he might score a big win over the Chicago giant, just like he did against Gang’s House of Humperdink ally “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert back in March in Tupelo. Jim went for the bear hug but couldn’t fully lock it in due to the Gang’s size. Gang battled back and executed a falling face slam on Jim. He continued to punish Jim and finally knocked him down with a big right hand to score the pinfall. *¼
3) “Dastardly” Danny Doring and the Amish RoadKill scored another victory, this time via countout, over Brad and Brian Armstrong. The Armstrongs looked like they would avenge their loss, as they double teamed the “Dastardly One.” Brian hit a rope straddle on Doring and went for a cover but Doring kicked out. Doring made the tag to RoadKill and “The Angry Amish Warrior” hit a Barn Burner for a near fall on Brad. Doring came back in and hit the Danaconda. Brian went for a pin save but so did RoadKill. Joe Wheeler saw RoadKill come in first and ordered him back to the corner. Meanwhile, “The Road Dogg” dropped a Shake, Rattle, and Roll knee drop on the back of Doring’s head and then put Brad on top. Wheeler turned around and went to count but Doring kicked out. The Armstrongs worked over Doring again for a few minutes. Brad busted him open with an elbow the head, then whipped him into the ropes, and tossed him with a back body drop on the rebound. Brad went for a cover. RoadKill went for the save but so did “The Road Dogg.” Like earlier in the bout, Wheeler saw the second man coming in first and went to order Brian back to his corner. RoadKill quickly scurried up to the top rope and came off with the Amish Splash to the back, sacrificing his own partner. RoadKill put Doring on top as Wheeler turned around but Brad kicked out of the pin attempt. Both men were hurting from RoadKill’s dive and were slow to recover. They finally got to their feet and Doring hit the Wham, Bam, Thank You Ma’am, driving Brad right on his head and busting him open. Doring went for the pin but Brad kicked out. Doring tagged RoadKill and tossed Brad out of the ring. RoadKill climbed up the middle part of the ropes and dove off the top, hitting a diving clothesline to the floor, flattening Brad. RoadKill returned to the ring while Wheeler continued the count. Despite Brian’s help, Brad was not able to return to the ring by the 10-count, so Doring and RoadKill scored another win over the Armstrongs! ***¾
4) “Exotic” Adrian Street defeated Jim Powers. Street made another grand entrance. Powers had the initial control but Street quickly took control. He hit a neckbreaker for a near fall. Street got Powers down on the mat with the crucifix a few moments later to score the pinfall. Jim Cornette was happy with his newest charge’s latest win! ¼*
5) The Patriot earned an impressive victory over George South. South tried for a quick ambush but the masked man saw him coming and clotheslined him. He then hit the Uncle Slam and scored the pinfall in about 15 seconds. The Memphis fans gave the Patriot a big ovation for his win! DUD
6) Doctor X and Billy Black Lyons got a hard-fought victory over Brian Kendrick and Paul London. This was a back-and-forth tag team bout. The high-flying fan favorites had control against the Doctor at the start. London executed the 450 splash a few minutes into the bout but the masked man kicked out. London and Kendrick hit the assisted Shooting Star Press shortly after but Lyons broke up the pin attempt. Kendrick executed a huracanrana on X and went for a pin but again Lyons made the save. X managed to tag to Lyons and the rulebreakers started to ground the high flyers. Lyons caught Kendrick in the sleeperhold. Kendrick dropped to the mat but with London and the fans cheering him was able to fight through and elbow his way out of the hold. Lyons cut him off with a hair pull and then dropped a knee across his face, busting open Kendrick. Lyons tagged to X and the rulebreakers executed a unique double team maneuver, where Lyons lifted Kendrick up in a kneebreaker but dropped Kendrick across X’s knee instead of his own. X went for a cover but Kendrick kicked out. X went for the X-cellent sleeper on Kendrick. A bloodied Kendrick started to drop but London came in with a running dropkick from behind to X to break up the hold. Both men were down and crawled to their corners for tags. Kendrick made the hot tag to London. The Texan ran wild on the masked man but Lyons cut him off with a knee to the back from the ring apron. X attacked London’s leg, pulled him to his corner, and tagged Lyons. Lyons went for the figure-four leglock but London managed to roll to the ropes for a break. Lyons continued to attack the leg and then tagged back to X. X hit a back suplex and made a cover but Kendrick made a save. Lyons came in with a dropkick, knocking Kendrick out of the ring. Lyons followed him to the floor and stomped away at his bloody face to keep him out of the bout. Inside the ring, X locked on the figure-four again on London. London fought hard but was trapped in the center of the ring and forced to tap out. It was an impressive win for X and Lyons! ****¼
7) Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy took a bloody beating but rallied back to defeat Mad Dog Vachon. Vachon was extra aggressive against his rival, coming out strong at the bell. He used a backbreaker and a double foot stomp for separate near falls. He choked Gordy on the ropes and twice hit the Mad Dog Pounce. He went for a cover after the second Pounce but the former Southern champ kicked out. Gordy rallied back and blasted Vachon with the Oriental Spike to earn the two-count. Gordy hit the power bomb and went for a cover but Vachon got a foot on the ropes. After back-and-forth action, Gordy hit a second power bomb a few moments later to get the win. The Memphis fans gave Gordy a big ovation following his win and “Bamm Bamm” looks ready to go for his second Southern Heavyweight title and gain a measure of revenge for Steve Williams when he faces “Classy” Freddie Blassie in the main event next week at the Louisville Gardens! ***¾
8) “The Gamesmaster” Kevin Sullivan defeated Red Bastien in a double-juice bout. Bastien had the early advantage and ran wild on Sullivan, hoping not only for a victory but also revenge for the House of Humperdink’s attack on Nick Bockwinkel at Independence Day Bash. Bastien hit the airplane spin into the atomic drop and went for a cover but Sullivan kicked out. Bastien came off the second turnbuckle with a knee drop to the face which drew blood on the Boston native. Bastien hit a second atomic drop and went for a cover but Sir Oliver Humperdink had gotten up on the ring apron and distracted Scott Bowden. Bastien went after the manager which allowed a bleeding Sullivan to recover and nail Bastien with a stiff clothesline. Bastien kicked out at two but “The Gamesmaster” continued his onslaught. He pounded on Bastien and hit the double foot stomp three separate times, one across Bastien’s face, busting him open as well. Sullivan would not go for the cover, instead of wanting to punish the flying redhead more and inflict more punishment. Sullivan hit a fourth stomp and finally covered Bastien to pick up the win.
What happened after the bout was just as memorable. As Sullivan got his hand raised, fellow House of Humperdink members the World Tag Team champions Larry Zbyszko and Mr. Saito, as well as the One Man Gang came down to the ring. Gang grabbed a steel chair from ringside and tossed it into the ring. Sullivan started giving directions to his allies. Zbyszko and Saito placed Bastien’s leg inside the chair and Sullivan went up to the second rope to leap off and perhaps stomp on the chair! Before he could, “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert in about two months inside a USWA ring, came out from the back, dressed in street clothes. He pulled Sullivan off the turnbuckle and got into his face, questioning what he was doing. Gilbert then turned to his manager Humperdink and seemed to ask how he could let someone like this into his stable. It seemed as if the group was done with their carnage but suddenly Sullivan ambushed Gilbert from behind with Humperdink’s cane, which he had taken right out of the manager’s hand! Gilbert was down on the mat and Sullivan ordered Gang to hit the 747 Splash, which the giant did! Sullivan then ordered the World Tag Team champions to put Gilbert’s leg inside the chair. Sullivan then hit several double foot stomps to the chair, crushing Gilbert’s leg inside! Gilbert screamed in pain. Sullivan went up to the second turnbuckle and hit another foot stomp in a sickening scene. “The Gamesmaster” then went up to the top rope but before he could hit it, a bloodied Bastien had recovered and dropkicked Zbyszko and Saito out of the ring. Humperdink and Gang retreated, while Bastien grabbed the chair off Gilbert’s leg and tossed it at Sullivan. Sullivan dodged the chair and got off the ropes, retreating with the rest of the House of Humperdink. The stable was pelted with boos and garbage, as Bastien and several USWA referees and officials checked on Gilbert. A stretcher was brought into the arena and Gilbert was taken out on it. ****
9) After the carnage of the previous bout was cleared up, it was time for the first of two title matches. “The Belfast Bruiser” Fit Finlay captured his second USWA Mid-America Heavyweight championship by defeating Tommy Rogers. Rogers started off strong with his fast-paced offense. Finlay capitalized on a missed move and hit the tombstone early in the bout. Rogers managed to kick out at 2¾. Finlay maintained his attack and Rogers was hurting from the tombstone. Finlay came off the second rope with a reverse splash. He covered Rogers, driving his forearm into the throat and then grabbing the second rope with his other arm for leverage. Joe Wheeler was focused on Rogers’ shoulders and missed the illegal leverage, so Finlay scored the tainted win and regained the Mid-America title after about seven minutes of action! Memphis fans berated the Irish brawler with boos as he was given the belt! **
10) The main event was for the USWA World Tag Team championship. The current and two-time champions Larry Zbyszko and Mr. Saito of the House of Humperdink put the titles on the line against the Heavenly Bodies, accompanied by manager Jim Cornette and his bodyguard Dan “The Beast” Severn. Severn was sporting some bandages from being carved up by BTW U.S. Heavyweight champion the Sheik’s sharp object last week in Toledo. Many wondered which rulebreaking team would be favored by the Memphis fans and tonight the challengers were favored! While fans are often eager to see a USWA title change in-person, most feel that the fans were irate about Zbyszko and Saito’s involvement in the earlier, heinous attack on “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert.
The champions cut the ring in half on Dr. Tom Prichard in the first minutes of the main event. Prichard kicked out of the Saito suplex. Saito went for the Scorpion Leglock but Chris Candido attacked Saito from behind to break up the submission attempt. Prichard tagged to Candido, who used his fast-paced offense against Saito. Saito tagged to Zbyszko who cut off “The Suicide Blonde.” Zbyszko hit the piledriver but Candido kicked out. Zbyszko tagged to Saito and then hit a backbreaker on Candido, bending him across his knee after the slam and holding him in place. Saito came off the second turnbuckle with a knee drop to Candido. Saito went for a cover but Candido took over. The challengers took control for a few minutes on Zbyszko, hitting a Flapjack on him. Zbyszko got away and tagged to Saito but the Bodies double teamed him as well. They executed the Prima Donna Plunge but Zbyszko broke up the pin attempt. Saito recovered and head butted Prichard, busting him open. Saito locked on a sleeper but Prichard elbow his way out of the hold. Saito grabbed him in a waistlock before he could tag Candido, pulled him to the House of Humperdink team’s corner and tagged to Zbyszko. The former Southern champ stomped on Prichard’s back and then went for a Boston Crab. Prichard’s wound had been opened up more and the blood was flowing heavily. “The Doctor of Desire” looked in trouble but Candido came to the rescue with a missile dropkick to Zbyszko’s back, sending him face-first into his own corner. Saito pointed to the buckle and Zbyszko removed the pad, while Paul Morton ordered Candido back to the Bodies’ corner. Cornette tried to draw Morton’s attention to this but the official stayed focused on the action. Prichard was stumbling around, weakened by the punishment from the champs and the blood loss but started to battle back with punches to Zbyszko. He went to whip Zbyszko into a corner but Zbyszko reversed it and sent Prichard crashing into Morton. The whip into Morton appeared to be inadvertent. With the official down, all four men started brawling in the ring. The champions gained the upper hand, tossing out Candido. Zbyszko went for the piledriver but Prichard drove him back-first into Saito. Saito ran over and nailed Prichard with one of the title belts. He then hit an Oriental leg sweep on Prichard. Joe Wheeler came sprinting down to the ring as other USWA officials and referees helped Morton to the back. Saito went for a cover as Wheeler came in to count but Prichard kicked out at 2¾. Humperdink yelled at Wheeler that he was slow to take over officiating. Prichard tagged to Candido, who had recovered and gotten back on the apron. Candido clotheslined Saito and then went for a vertical suplex. Wheeler was behind Saito and Saito kicked Wheeler in the stomach as Candido lifted him for the suplex. That move appeared to have been intentional! A brawl with all four wrestlers started again. Zbyszko slammed Candido’s head into the exposed turnbuckle. Saito grabbed a very bloodied Prichard and he and Zbyszko both rammed Prichard into the buckle as well. The USWA officials were back to ringside again to help Wheeler to the back. Scott Bowden came into the ring take over officiating. Bowden checked on Prichard’s blood loss. Cornette yelled that the champs should be disqualified. Bowden had not seen the use of the exposed buckle and called for the bell after 18 minutes of action. He went over to explain the decision to Gary Michael Cappetta and the ring announcer said that due to the massive amounts of blood lost by Prichard, he was stopping the match and awarding the bout to Zbyszko and Saito. The House of Humperdink team celebrated at retaining the titles via blood stoppage! Humperdink was happy with his men but Cornette was irate and went after Humperdink! He clocked the manager with the tennis racquet. The champions went after “The Louisville Slugger” but were cut off by Severn, who stepped in front of his employer! Candido came over with a steel chair as well! The champions and their manager left with their belts in hand but were berated by boos and garbage from the Mid-South Coliseum fans! Candido and Severn helped a bloodied and weakened Dr. Tom to the back. **** (NOTE: Due to kickouts, pin saves, and “Add 1” moves that took place during the two hurt referee spots, Prichard had 10 tokens on him at the end of the bout! This was a rare time I used my house rule of blood stoppage, where if one wrestler in a regular bout has a PIN rating of “12” or higher, I stop the bout. I only do this if one wrestler is bleeding and no others in the match. In my fed, I say five tokens is blood, instead of three, so that, in theory, blood doesn’t happen quite as often. Depending on the last dice roll and what builds for a good storyline, when the PIN rating reaches “12,” I will either call it a “blood stoppage” finish or just say the losing wrestler was pinned or submitted.)

Brutal main event. I've had some great battles between Gilbert and Sullivan so cool to see that going on in your USWA and always fun to see Patriot and Street grabbing victories.

I love the variety of talent you have on your shows. Zbyszko and Saito will be tough to get those belts off of.

What can be better than a night of USWA action at the Mid-South Coliseum? What a main event with Larry Zbyszko & Mr. Saito getting the decision over the Heavenly Bodies via blood stoppage. Combine that with their earlier involvement in helping to injure Eddie Gilbert and it was a wild night for the tag champs and the House of Humperdink as a whole. I use a similar referee stoppage based on token count. It can make for some cool match finishes.
Congrats to Finlay on becoming a two-time Mid-America Heavyweight champion. Tommy Rogers had a nice run but Finlay wanted that belt back. Nice wins for Adrian Street and OMG underneath as well. Terry Gordy, coming off that huge win over Mad Dog Vachon, looks ready for his match with Fred Blassie for the Southern title. As for Eddie Gilbert, I'm looking forward to his return from injury and hopefully getting a chance to get revenge on Kevin Sullivan and the House of Humperdink.

Thanks to Troy, Keifer's Dad, and Crue Fan for the comments!Highlights from USWA Championship Wrestling on August 20, following a wild and memorable card at the Mid-South Coliseum! • Footage was shown from last Monday’s card, where “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert was being rolled into an ambulance after the attack from the House of Humperdink. Red Bastien and other fan favorites were present, along with USWA officials and paramedics. Back in the WMC-TV Studios, Lance Russell announced that Gilbert suffered a broken leg and will be out of action indefinitely. Later in the show, Russell interviewed “The Gamesmaster” Kevin Sullivan and Sir Oliver Humperdink. He asked how they could do this to someone who was part of their stable. Humperdink answered that when he and Gilbert made the deal for him to take over managing Hot Stuff, International in June 2015 and make the stable the House of Humperdink, he got to decide who would be a part of the stable. He said that Gilbert had forgotten who the manager was now and had gotten a “big head”! Sullivan added that he had felt that Gilbert had gotten weak and when he stopped him and the other House of Humperdink members from attacking Bastien, he proved his weakness. Russell asked if they knew that Gilbert was going to be in Memphis that night, since he wasn’t scheduled on the card. Humperdink said that he had invited Gilbert to be there under the guise of a “House of Humperdink meeting.” Sullivan said that since none of Bastien’s regular allies were on the card, he knew that it would be the perfect opportunity for their plan! • Another video taken at the Mid-South Coliseum was shown. Paramedics were stitching up Dr. Tom Prichard after the bloody beating he took in the USWA World Tag Team title main event from last week. Jim Cornette looked at the camera and ironically complained about the cheating by Larry Zbyszko and Mr. Saito! He said that they “should be arrested” for their actions and stripped of the titles! He added that the Heavenly Bodies should have won the match by disqualification for the champions using Sir Oliver Humperdink’s cane and for ramming both Bodies into the exposed top turnbuckle. He said that he knows Commissioner Bob Armstrong hates him but if he is a fair commissioner, he will give the Bodies a rematch! • Commissioner Armstrong responded to Cornette’s comments in-studio, saying that Cornette was right about the use of the cane and the metal buckle. But there was no referee present to call the disqualification. He said that he supports all of his current officials and their decisions and that sometimes referees miss illegal actions, such as Joe Wheeler missing Fit Finlay grabbing the ropes right before the main event to regain the Mid-America title. He said that he does agree that the Bodies will get a rematch. However, Zbyszko and Saito’s next challengers will be Doctor X and Billy Black Lyons, two men that the champions know well! This bout will be the main event on September 12 at the Sailors and Soldiers Memorial Coliseum in Evansville! • Speaking of Fit Finlay, the commissioner announced that the new USWA Mid-America Heavyweight champion “The Belfast Bruiser” Fit Finlay will have a busy few weeks. First of all, he will battle his rival and former champion Ray “The Crippler” Stevens on September 12 in Evansville. Stevens and Jimmy Hart were interviewed and Hart said it was “outrageous” that this is a non-title bout, since Stevens has defeated Finlay in the past and Finlay has never beaten him! Stevens said he will embarrass Finlay again and get a title shot to regain “his” title! • Finlay’s first defense will come the following week, when he puts the gold on the line against Tyler Black! That title bout will take place on September 19 at the Springfield Civic Center in Springfield, TN! Black has been on a roll since going out on his own and hiring Luke Harper as his bodyguard. This will be Black’s first shot at a USWA championship. • The commissioner announced some more bouts for the card on September 5, Labor Day, at the Civic Coliseum in Knoxville! o The Heavenly Bodies will continue their feud with the Midnight Express! You can bet that Dr. Tom Prichard and Chris Candido will be looking to get a big win, coming off their controversial World Tag Team title bout last week in Memphis. But “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton and “Sweet” Stan Lane are looking to defeat Jim Cornette’s team for the first time and get into the Tag Team title picture themselves! o Billy Gunn will have a huge singles bout when takes on Japanese Olympian and one half of the World Tag Team champions Mr. Saito! Gunn scored an impressive win over Saito’s partner Larry Zbyszko at Independence Day Bash and is familiar with Saito from the New Age Outlaws’ battles with the House of Humperdink team for the Tag Team titles. A win over Saito would be an impressive one for Gunn, as he hopes to achieve success in singles competition! o Another House of Humperdink member will be in action, as the One Man Gang faces perhaps his toughest opponent to date in the USWA, in “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan! This should be a hard-hitting bout between these mammoths! • This week’s song from “Exotic” Adrian Street was his upbeat tune “Street Rap,” where the grappler spells out his name and the meaning behind each letter! The USWA wraps up the summer with a hot, hot card on August 22 at the Louisville Gardens! • “Exotic” Adrian Street has made an impact in and out of the ring in the last six weeks in the USWA. This week, he will face a fellow mate from “across the pond”—British grappler David Taylor! Taylor made the challenge for this bout, calling Street an “embarrassment” to the British Iles. Can the former Mid-America champion win in honor of his home country or will Street triumph again? • The battle of the “Superstars” will continue when “Superstar” Bill Dundee faces Superstar Bundy! Dundee has been victorious in their singles bouts and he and now-World champion “Boogie Woogie Man” “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant finally got a tag team win over Bundy and Big John Studd last month in Lexington. Can the Aussie keep up his winning ways over the man who is mocking his identity? • A rematch of a wild bout at the Nashville Fairgrounds last month will take place, when “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan faces Mad Dog Vachon! Vachon put a bloody beating on Duggan last month but lost via disqualification when he choked Duggan with his chain. What will the outcome be this time? • The Heavenly Bodies are coming off their controversial loss to Larry Zbyszko and Mr. Saito in the USWA World Tag Team title last week in Memphis. This week they will do battle with a team they know very well—Brian Kendrick and Paul London! Kendrick and London gave Tom Prichard and Chris Candido their first loss back in May in Memphis via countout. The Bodies and Jim Cornette want to avenge that loss and make a statement as they await a rematch for the titles. Can they avenge their loss or will lightning strike twice for the high-flying fan favorites? • The main event from Independence Day Bash will take place again this week, when the now former USWA World Heavyweight champion “Ravishing” Rick Rude takes on “Mr. USA” Tony Atlas! Atlas looked like he might get a quick win and grab the World title on the 4th of July, as he press slammed Rude and went for the splash but Jimmy Hart interfered with the megaphone, leading to Rude getting the pinfall win. Rude is coming off the loss of his title after a 19½-month reign and is hoping for a second win on Atlas but the powerhouse is looking to avenge his loss to Rude. Who will win the battle of these muscle men? • The main event will be a first-time match-up for the USWA Southern Heavyweight championship. Two-time and current champion “Classy” Freddie Blassie will defend the title against former champion Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy. Gordy got a huge win over Mad Dog Vachon last week, taking a lot of punishment but coming back to win. While Gordy naturally is hoping to win his second Southern title, he is also looking for vengeance on Blassie, who ambushed his injured tag team partner Steve “Dr. Death” Williams last month at the Nashville Fairgrounds before their title bout. Can Gordy win the gold and gain revenge for “Doc” or will Blassie retain again? All these great bouts, plus a new tag team feud will continue, as Brad and Brian Armstrong are gunning for their first win against “Dastardly” Danny Doring and the Amish RoadKill! As well as “The Gamesmaster” Kevin Sullivan, “Exotic” Adrian Street, Billy Gunn, and the debut of the host of The Art of Wrestling— Colt “Boom Boom” Cabana!
