Thanks to Stu, Troy, and Victory Roll for the comments!
Highlights of USWA Championship Wrestling on August 19:
• Commissioner Bob Armstrong announced some upcoming matches. First of all, for the Labor Day card on September 4 from the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis:
o A battle of big men will take place again when Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy faces King Kong Bundy! Gordy scored a big pinfall on the New Jersey giant back in April in Lexington. Bundy avenged that loss beating Gordy in Gordy’s hometown of Chattanooga in June at Engel Stadium. Who will win this huge “rubber match”?
o Gordy’s tag team partner Steve “Dr. Death” Williams will also be in action on this card. The eight-time former Southern Heavyweight champion will go one-on-one for the first time ever against former Southern champion and former NWA World champion Harley Race! Race is 13-0 overall as of this writing since returning to the USWA in March at this same arena. This is a match that a lot of wrestling experts are eagerly anticipating!
o Another match-up between former Southern champs will see “Classy” Freddie Blassie take on Doctor X! X has picked up big wins in the last few weeks over “Mr. USA” Tony Atlas and the Patriot. He hopes to do the same over Blassie but Blassie is no pushover!
o A huge tag team rematch will take place when Ivan Koloff and Mr. Saito of the House of Humperdink will take on Brad and Brian Armstrong! These teams battled for nearly 50 minutes last month at the Nashville Fairgrounds! The Armstrongs looked like they would give Koloff and Saito their first loss until Saito used Sir Oliver Humperdink’s cane!
• The commissioner announced that the USWA will debut in a new town and building for the September 11 card, when they come to the Old National Guard Armory in Amory, MS! That card will be headlined by The Heavenly Bodies defending the USWA World Tag Team titles against the undefeated team of Ivan Koloff and Mr. Saito! This will be an interesting match-up between Jim Cornette’s team, who rely on finesse and double teaming, against Sir Oliver Humperdink’s men, who use a more power-based attack. Both teams are adept at bending the rules. Whom will the fans favor in this battle of rulebreaking teams?
The USWA comes back to the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Coliseum in Evansville on August 21!
• A huge tag team rematch from two weeks ago in Knoxville will take place, as Steve “Dr. Death” Williams and Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy will take on Ivan Koloff and Mr. Saito! These teams battled to a double disqualification last time when all four men were brawling in the ring at the same time. Williams and Koloff have a history, as Williams was the first wrestler to pin “The Russian Bear” during his first tenure in 2010. Gordy and Saito have a history as well, as they were both members of “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert’s Hot Stuff, International. Can Williams and Gordy give the House of Humperdink team their first loss or will Koloff and Saito continue their winning ways?
• “The Boogie Woogie Man” “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant will take on “Classy” Freddie Blassie! “The King of Men” got the win two weeks ago in Knoxville by disqualification after Red Bastien interfered. Blassie was interviewed on Championship Wrestling and said he has noticed that there seems to be “strength in numbers” in the USWA and maybe he needs to accept that. Lance Russell asked him to explain himself and Blassie said that Lance and “the pencil-neck geeks” will soon find out!
• The World Tag Team champions will be in non-title action, as The Heavenly Bodies will battle Brad and Brian Armstrong! The Armstrongs would love to defeat the champions and earn another shot at the titles. Jim Cornette’s team has been very impressive since winning the titles in May. Who will leave Evansville the victors?
• A feud that has seen some wild bouts will continue, as “Superstar” Bill Dundee battles Mad Dog Vachon! In all of their battles the last eight months, Vachon has yet to score a pinfall or submission win on Dundee in singles bouts. With Vachon getting a rematch for the World Heavyweight title on Labor Day in Memphis, he would love to defeat the Aussie “Superstar.” Can he do it or will Dundee triumph again?
• A tag team grudge match will take place as World Heavyweight champion “The Gamesmaster” Kevin Sullivan and The Dark Patriot will take on Tommy and Eddie Gilbert! The Gilberts originally wanted this match for Independence Day Bash but Sullivan and the Dark Patriot had other matches on that card. This will be Eddie’s first time in a sanctioned match against Sullivan. The Gilberts are still gunning to unmask the Dark Patriot but they would also love to defeat the World champion Sullivan. What will happen in Evansville?
• The main event will be a huge return match for the USWA Southern Heavyweight championship. “Exotic” Adrian Street will defend the title against “American Dragon” Bryan Danielson! Danielson will be returning from a back injury caused by Street, Chris Candido, and Dan “The Beast” Severn back in April in Nashville. Danielson wrestled the following week against Street in his scheduled Southern title match in Jonesboro but clearly was not at 100% and has been out since then. A video aired on Championship Wrestling of Danielson training to get back in shape and strengthen his back. Danielson is the only wrestler to have scored a decisive win over Street in the USWA. If he wins the Southern title, he will become the first wrestler to have held all sanctioned USWA championships (the World Heavyweight, Southern, Mid-America, and the retired Texas championship). Can Danielson make history and avenge his injury or will the British glam rocker continue to hold on to his “bedazzled” Southern championship?
All these huge bouts, plus The Patriot battles Tyler Black! As well as “Scrap Iron” Adam Pearce in singles action and the debut of Baron Von Raschke!
