Thanks to Victory Roll, Neilybob, and Booker Bill for the comments!
February 26, 2018 Card #536: Louisville Gardens
1) Doctor X picked up a quick win in the opener over “Sodbuster” Kenny Jay. The masked grappler outwrestled Jay and locked him in a full nelson to get a submission in 25 seconds! DUD
2) The Uptown Boys defeated “Pretty Boy” Larry Sharpe and “The Unpredictable” Johnny Rodz in about seven minutes. For the fifth match in a row, Marty Jannetty and Ric McCord kept one of their opponents in the ring for the entire match and once again, it was Rodz. Rodz kicked out of a pin attempt by Jannetty after a dropkick. McCord tagged back in and immediately came off the top with the flying body press. Sharpe made a save but was dropkicked by Jannetty and knocked out of the ring! McCord went up top again and hit a second body press for good measure to score the pin! The Uptown Boys remain undefeated! ½*
3) Tommy Gilbert scored an impressive pinfall on Mad Dog Vachon. The action was quick in this bout. Vachon kicked out of the running knee lift but got his shoulder put down for the count after a back suplex in four minutes. The Louisville fans gave Gilbert a big ovation for his win! ¾*
4) Hugh Morrus continued his winning ways with a pinfall on Jake “The Milkman” Milliman in about 90 seconds. The man from the Isle of Nowhere dominated Milliman. He hit a back suplex and then went up top to hit the No Laughing Matter for the pinfall. The House of Humperdink member continues to impress, as he looks forward to a shot at the Mid-America title next month in Jackson! DUD
5) Ray “The Crippler” Stevens and Greg “The Hammer” Valentine kept up their winning ways with a victory over S.D. and S.T. Jones. While all four men tagged into this bout, Valentine scored the pin in about three minutes on “Soul Train” after a falling elbow hammer. “Special Delivery” had attempted a save but was stopped by Stevens. ¼*
6) The Patriot scored an impressive win on Baron Von Raschke in about two minutes. Von Raschke attacked right at the bell and had control. He missed a leg drop and the Patriot caught him with a power slam right away. Von Raschke kicked out of a pin attempt but went down to the Uncle Slam shortly thereafter! The Patriot got a big pop from the Gardens fans and looks ready for Harley Race and the World title on March 12 in Lexington! DUD
7) Colt “Boom Boom” Cabana picked up a huge win over his rival “Scrap Iron” Adam Pearce. Cabana charged the ring and went right at Pearce, as Gary Michael Cappetta finished up his introductions. Cabana gained the advantage but missed a moonsault off the top. Pearce hit the jumping piledriver but Cabana kicked out! Pearce tossed Cabana out of the ring and then distracted Tom Branch, while Mr. Hughes rammed Cabana head-first into the ring post, busting him open. The bodyguard tossed Cabana back into the ring. Pearce went for a second piledriver a few moments later but Cabana blocked the move and took control. Cabana hit the Colt .45 but Pearce got a foot on the ropes. A second Colt .45 put Pearce down for the count after 10 minutes. The Louisville fans gave the host of The Art of Wrestling a big ovation for his win! ****
8) “The Gamesmaster” Kevin Sullivan defeated Doug Gilbert by countout. This was a physical brawl between these two. Sullivan scored a near fall after a clothesline and then hit Gilbert with a steel chair outside the ring, while Sir Oliver Humperdink distracted Tommy Marlin. Sullivan stayed on the attack. Suddenly, Hugh Morrus showed up at ringside. Sullivan tossed Gilbert out of the ring and distracted Marlin again. Morrus attacked Gilbert, delivering a power bomb on the Louisville Gardens floor! Marlin turned around to see Gilbert down on the floor, as Morrus moved over closer to Humperdink. Gilbert was not able to get back in by the count of 10, so Sullivan was awarded the bout via countout after eight minutes. Quickly after the bell, Sullivan grabbed the chair again. Morrus tossed Gilbert into the ring and Sullivan gave him a falling slam onto the chair. Sullivan then held Gilbert down on the chair by the legs, while Morrus delivered No Laughing Matter! Morrus looked ready to go for another but Tommy and Eddie Gilbert and the Patriot came sprinting out of the back to run off the House of Humperdink members. Doug was in a lot of pain, as his family and ally helped him to the back. *¼
9) “Bullet” Bob Armstrong scored a big pinfall win over former Southern Heavyweight champion “Exotic” Adrian Street in a physical, 16-minute match. Street tried to gain a psychological edge in the first few minutes as he jumped into Armstrong’s arms and then planted a kiss on him! Armstrong was shocked and appalled, which allowed Street to hit a neckbreaker. Street then went for the London Bridge leglock early but Armstrong managed to get to the ropes. After several exchanges, Street regained control, knocking Armstrong down with a European uppercut and then hitting a running big splash for a two-count Armstrong would use his karate skills several times throughout the bout, blasting the British glam rocker with chops. Armstrong came off the second turnbuckle twice with elbow smashes. (Armstrong informed Lance Russell that this move is known as the Georgia jawjacker.) Street was busted open by the second jawjacker but Jim Cornette distracted Sam Platania from counting a potential pinfall. Armstrong went after “The Louisville Slugger.” While Platania intervened and tried to get Cornette off the apron, Mr. Hughes came at Armstrong from the other side with a big clothesline, allowing Street to take control. Street tossed Armstrong out of the ring but the “Bullet” caught him coming with a big right hand. Armstrong got back in the ring and suplexed Street back in as well. Street stumbled to his feet, blinded by his blood mixing with his face paint. Armstrong hit him with several more karate chops, finally knocking him down. He covered Street and scored the pinfall! The Louisville fans went wild for Armstrong’s victory, while Street was defeated in Cornette’s hometown! ****
10) The main event was for the USWA Southern Heavyweight championship and was a bout between two of the most popular stars in the area today. Current and two-time champion “American Dragon” Bryan Danielson put the title on the line against “Superstar” Bill Dundee. Right after Gary Michael Cappetta introduced both competitors in their respective corners, Mr. Hughes and Jim Cornette appeared in the aisleway of the Louisville Gardens to scout both wrestlers, since Hughes will challenge the winner for the title next month. (Naturally, Cornette once again was not greeted fondly by his hometown fans!) In a great display of sportsmanship, Danielson and Dundee shook hands before the bout began.
While the action was largely clean-cut in this bout, it was fast, as Danielson tried for a submission with the guillotine choke just a few minutes into the bout. Dundee quickly got to the ropes for a break. Danielson tried for the LeBell Lock but again the Aussie made the ropes before the champion could fully apply the hold. Danielson hit a series of roundhouse kicks to Dundee’s chest, as the crowd (who was split between their support of both athletes) chanted “Yes!” with each connecting kick. Danielson went for a cover but Dundee kicked out. Danielson sent Dundee into the ropes but was surprised with a sunset flip for a near fall. The champ got to his feet quickly and tried for a side headlock but Dundee got behind him and surprised him with a reverse rolling cradle for another two-count. The action was back-and-forth until Dundee missed a running leg drop. Danielson recovered and clamped on the LeBell Lock in the center of the ring. Dundee was trapped and forced to tap out after seven minutes, so Danielson retained the Southern Heavyweight title! As Tom Branch handed Danielson the belt and raised his hand, he and Dundee again shook hands and embraced. Danielson then held up the title belt and stared down Hughes and Cornette in the aisleway! **¾

Hugh Morrus appears to have a lot of momentum heading into his shot at the Mid-America title... And I thoroughly enjoyed that four-star war between the Bullet and the Exotic One.
Speaking of match ratings, I noticed a few duds on this most recent card... But, I can't recall ever seeing a squash... Do you generally rate squash matches as a dud? Also wondering if you have any kind of system for rating matches... Or is it a subjective thing?
Another fun event, my friend... Nicely put together!

Thanks to Pariah and Troy for the comments! Speaking of match ratings, I noticed a few duds on this most recent card... But, I can't recall ever seeing a squash... Do you generally rate squash matches as a dud? Also wondering if you have any kind of system for rating matches... Or is it a subjective thing? Good question, Pariah! I don't have a set system for my ratings, as far as "X number of tokens equals this-star rating" or anything of that nature. It's kind of a feeling of the overall action in the match, the token count, the finish, how it progresses things (for feuds or title shots), and other factors. Most matches that are DUDs would be considered a squash or a quick ending. Sometimes guys like Milliman, Kenny Jay, and Nacho might get a higher-rated match if they had some offense or even a near fall against the biggest star. The lowest I go for ratings is a negative one star. That is usually saved for main events or big feud matches that I expected to be decent but that end in a minute or in five moves. I'm actually up to August 2018 as far as my actual playing. I recently had a tag team match that I gave four-and-three-quarter stars. The only reason I didn't give it five was that the match ended on a countout. I just did a rematch between the two teams on my last. It was a very similar style match with lots of tokens, very back-and-forth, but this time there was a submission finish. I gave that match five stars. Hope that helps! Thanks for reading and posting!

The last two bouts in Louisville were great, especially Bob Armstrong over Adrian Street. I know The Patriot has his title shot upcoming but man I would love to see "The Bullet" get a shot at Harley Race for the USWA World title.

Thanks to loyal readers and posters Victory Roll and Crue Fan for the comments! How long has it been since you last gave a match a negative star rating? Any time I write neg* after a match means it was a negative-star rating. As I wrote in a recent post, I'm ahead in real time of where I'm presently posting. I know in the last couple of cards, I've had a couple of negative-star matches, unfortunately!

Highlights from the last two episodes of USWA Championship Wrestling:
March 3: • It was announced that Doug Gilbert suffered a rib injury in the attack by Kevin Sullivan and Hugh Morrus last week in Louisville. He will be out of action for about two months. Commissioner Teddy Long announced that Tommy and Eddie Gilbert will get a chance for revenge on March 12 at the Rupp Arena in Lexington! (See Card #537 preview below.) • It was verified that “American Dragon” Bryan Danielson will defend the USWA Southern Heavyweight championship against Mr. Hughes in the main event on March 26 at the Oman Arena in Jackson! • Colt Cabana was interviewed in studio. The usually jovial Cabana had a more serious tone. He recapped his history with “Scrap Iron” Adam Pearce. He said that the USWA Is not big enough for the both of them. Therefore, he got approval from Commissioner Long for a final series of battles that he is calling Seven Levels of Hate! It will be a best-of-seven series of matches taking place, in theory, over seven different cards. The wrestler to win four matches will win the series and the loser will have to leave the USWA for one full year! He also added that each match will have a separate stipulation added to it. • Pearce and Jim Cornette, flanked by Mr. Hughes, responded later in the show. Cornette said that he and his men must have hit Cabana in the head too many times for him to come up with a cockamamy idea like this! He said that if Cabana wants to get embarrassed once again, Pearce will be happy to do it! Pearce said that the stipulations won’t make a difference, as he will defeat Cabana in any type of match and he won’t need a full series of seven, as he will sweep Cabana in four matches. He said once he rids the USWA of Cabana, he can focus on becoming the top wrestler in the USWA! • “Superstar” Bill Dundee appeared in studio for his big announcement. Lance Russell complimented Dundee on his Southern title challenge against Bryan Danielson last week in Louisville. Dundee thanked Lance and the fans, congratulated Danielson, and said that one day, he will wear gold in the USWA. “Classy” Freddie Blassie and the Tolos Brothers stormed the studio, telling Dundee to stop wasting time and tell them who his and Jimmy Valiant’s third partner would be on March 19 in Nashville. After a big build-up, Dundee introduced “Wildfire” Tommy Rich to the WMC-TV Studios and the USWA fans! Rich is one of the most popular wrestlers in the U.S. today, having competed for most of the last few years in Georgia Championship Wrestling, where he held the GCW National Heavyweight title on several occasions, as well as the National Tag Team titles with “Mr. USA” Tony Atlas! Rich, a native of Hendersonville, TN, said that he is “fired up!” to be back in his home area and he looks forward to making his fans proud! He said that despicable people like Blassie and the Toloses are not good for the sport and he wants to help out Dundee and Valiant to run bums like them out of the territory! Blassie and the Toloses were irate and a brawl almost broke out but security intervened to restore decorum!
March 10: • Commissioner Teddy Long announced that for the upcoming Seven Levels of Hate series between Colt Cabana and Adam Pearce, the matches would be scheduled every two USWA cards, to give the wrestlers time to heal up, if needed, in between each bout. With different stipulations in place, these two could be facing more physicality than usual! Long announced that match #1 will take place on March 19 at the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville and that this will be a 2-out-of-3 Falls Match! • The commissioner also announced that World Heavyweight champion Harley Race will be on the Nashville card and will take on “The Gamesmaster” Kevin Sullivan in a non-title grudge match! In their last meeting with the title at stake, Sullivan was quickly disqualified for using a steel chair. What will happen this time around? • A music video aired, highlighting the career of “Wildfire” Tommy Rich, who will be debuting in the big six-man tag team match in Nashville!
The USWA returns to the Rupp Arena in Lexington on March 12! • As a result of the injury to Doug Gilbert, Commissioner Teddy Long made a huge tag team bout for this card on the March 3 edition of USWA Championship Wrestling, as Tommy and Eddie Gilbert will take on House of Humperdink members “The Gamemaster” Kevin Sullivan and Hugh Morrus! The Gilberts will be fueled by revenge for Doug’s injury. Can they topple the former World champion and the undefeated laughing man? • One week before the big six-man tag team match in “Music City,” “Classy” Freddie Blassie will go one-on-one with “Superstar” Bill Dundee! Blassie and the Tolos Brothers were shocked to hear that “Wildfire” Tommy Rich will be teaming up with Dundee and “The Boogie Woogie Man” “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant next week in Nashville. Blassie will be out to put a beating on the Aussie before that tag team bout. Can he succeed or will Dundee spoil his plans? • “Bullet” Bob Armstrong has been on a roll since returning to active competition! This week, he will do battle with Baron Von Raschke! Can the “Bullet” shoot down “The Clawmaster”? • Two rival tag teams will do battle again, as The Flying Redheads face The Tolos Brothers! Red Bastien and Billy Red Lyons earned a shot at the World Tag Team titles for next week’s main event in Nashville, while the Toloses are still under their suspension of no title shots! The Redheads gave the Canadian brothers their first decisive loss in January in Chattanooga. John and Chris Tolos will be out to avenge that loss and to injure the Redheads prior to their title shot. Which duo will get the win in Lexington? • In the main event, the undefeated Harley Race will defend the USWA World Heavyweight title against The Patriot! The masked American has been on a roll in 2018 and hopes to capture his first USWA championship. Of course, Race has been so dominant since returning a year ago and plans to keep the World title in the First Family of Wrestling. Race has had some run-ins with the Patriot’s allies Tommy and Eddie Gilbert the last few weeks and perhaps the Gilberts’ knowledge of the champ could be an added advantage for the challenger. Will the Patriot knock off the champ or will Race continue his reign?
All these bouts, as well as Billy Gunn battling King Kong Bundy! Plus, Mr. Hughes, Colt “Boom Boom” Cabana, the First Family team of Ray “The Crippler” Stevens and Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, Doctor X, and more superstars in action in Lexington!
