Pariah , bookerbill , cruefan68 - Originally, with the butt-kicking streak Jay Briscoe was on, I was going to have Mark be the guy to (maybe) derail him. But with Jay losing, it changed the dynamic and the Briscoe challenge series was born. As Jay said, the brother vs brother thing has been done, so I'm glad it turned out this way. It should be fun. And Crue, after watching the Briscoes for 10+ years, those voices are burned into my brain. Writing their promos are the easiest out of any wrestler's to do at this point. Thanks for the thoughts guys. Here's Border Wars - we'll have some more things to talk about.
Silas Young def. BJ Whitmer by pin
The Toronto crowd really got on Silas’ nerves as he had face-to-face confrontations with a handful of ring-siders. Young ran roughshod over Whitmer. He had to stick the tough BJ twice with a Pee Gee Waja Plunge for the win.
Adam Page w/Truth Martini def. Mark Briscoe by pin
Page got off to a decent start but it didn't take long for Mark to take over. Martini had to cause a distraction to prevent the pin on his man after a Cut-Throat Driver. Mark went for the move again and when Truth jumped up on the apron to interfere again, Mark reached over the ropes and grabbed him by the lapels of his cheap jacket. Martini frantically begged off, giving Page time to recover and clobber Mark from behind and go for his finisher, Rite of Passage. Briscoe kicked out of the pin attempt to the shock of Page. Adam continued dealing out the punishment and hit the Rite of Passage again. This time it was enough for the win. Truth nodded his head and held up his index finger, telling the stunned Toronto fans that the House of Truth was #1.
Jay Briscoe def. Roderick Strong by pin
Jay came out on fire, really working over Strong in the opening minutes. Roddy got his run of offense in, working on Briscoes back, including using a steel chair. Briscoe made a comeback and dropped Strong on his head three times with a Jay Driller but Roddy kept kicking out. Strong answered with the Strong Hold and End of Heartache but couldn’t get the pin either. This slugfest went back and forth some more before Briscoe hit another series of three Jay Drillers to end the contest. The crowd were on their feet with a “That was awesome!” chant as the weary combatants returned to the back.
Moose def. Donovan Dijak w/Truth Martini by DQ
The two big men traded blows and power moves with neither able to get the clear advantage. Moose wrapped Dijak in a bearhug that he couldn’t escape from. Out of desperation, Donovan lurched backwards, toppling both men over the top rope and through the timekeeper’s table. Dijak recovered first and pinned Moose against the guardrail with half of the broken table and started stomping. The ref disqualified him but he seemed satisfied for having done damage to his rival.
The Young Bucks def. War Machine by DQ
Young Bucks/War Machine 4 was set and the Bucks had more support from the Toronto crowd than they have had during the last two events. Hanson and Nick Jackson started off trading heavy shots but Nick found himself taking the brunt of the exchange and tagged in his brother. Matt tried to slow the pace by trying to get Hanson to ‘Too Sweet’ him. Hanson looked like he was going to go along with it but instead grabbed Matt’s arm, whipping him into the ropes and caught him with a reverse spinning powerslam. Raymond Rowe tagged in and War Machine went for their combo finisher. Matt rolled to the ropes before Rowe could make the cover. The Bucks looked like they were going to beat a retreat like they had in the past. Rowe followed them up the ramp with a steel chair and gave both Jacksons a taste. The ref couldn’t let this stand and disqualified War Machine who got some heat from the Canadian fans.
During intermission, ROH matchmaker Nigel McGuinness introduced Stokely Hathaway. He explained that Hathaway would be Ring of Honor Ambassador, taking over for Nigel with crowd interaction at live events and other PR related responsibility, including wrestler interviews, etc. The crowd gave Stokely a warm welcome. Nigel continued, bringing Steve Corino out, officially turning over the majority of color commentator duties to him, beginning with the second half of the night’s show. Corino got some jeers from the crowd that he goodnaturedly acknowledged. Nigel expressed his desire for the fans to give Steve a second chance like he has. McGuinness said these changes were being made so that he could focus on keeping order with the talent and in-ring action. He promised more changes with new and familiar faces coming to Ring of Honor and other exciting developments.
PROVING GROUNDS MATCH
Matt Sydal def. Chris Sabin w/Truth Martini by pin
If Sydal could beat the ROH World Champion in this non-title bout, he would earn a championship match for a later date. There was a pre-match face off as Sydal confronted Sabin about bailing on him during the Tag Wars Tournament. “You’re still crying about that?” Sabin asked as the ref separated them for the introductions. As Sydal was introduced, Sabin mocked him by rubbing his fists under his eyes like he was crying. The match started with some quick back and forth counters, the end result being Sabin bailing out of the ring after Matt hit a couple of big moves. Sydal went on an impressive run until Chris stepped aside when he went for a flying kick from the top rope. Sabin hit a superkick and went for the cover and a near fall. Matt made his comeback, scoring a near fall after a top rope Frankensteiner and soon after landing a Shooting Sydal Press. Sabin just barely kicked out and Truth wiped his forehead in relief. Cyclorama for another close count and Sydal was really on a roll. Matt snapped Sabin with Aftershock and hooked a leg for the solid three count. The crowd loved it almost as much as Martini hated it. Sydal would get a rematch in the future, this time for the ROH World Championship!
RING OF HONOR WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
No Disqualification
reDragon def. The Kingdom by pin
The bad blood between these two teams led to this match being fought without disqualification as ROH officials wanted there to be decisive winner. Bobby Fish started the match against Michael Bennett. Bobby outmaneuvered Mike at every turn and when Bennett finally got a move in, Fish made the tag right away to Kyle O’Reilly. Their was a lot of heat between Bennett and O’Reilly going into this match and Kyle went for the throat right away, literally, with a guillotine choke. Bennett escaped and caught Kyle with a superkick as he came off the top rope, then tagged in Matt Taven. Kyle took a lot of damage at the hands of Taven, kicking out of a few pin attempts. Bennett returned, getting more heat off of Kyle and Fish had to make a pin save. The Kingdom tried taking advantage of the no DQ stipulation by taking the fight to the floor. This backfired as reDRagon turned the tide in their favor. Fish was able to tag in and tried for a flying back elbow off the top rope but Bennett ducked and the ref took the bump. Fish worked over Bennett including using a steel chair. reDragon stayed on top of Mike and O’Reilly tried for the submission with Armageddon multiple times but Bennett escaped each time. Mike even kicked out after Chasing the Dragon. After absorbing more punishment, Chasing the Dragon finished him on the second try. reDRagon claimed the ROH tag titles at the end the grueling path to overcoming the Kingdom.
Affluence def. Michael Elgin, Dalton Castle, Cedric Alexander & ACH by pin
Elgin had united his team of individuals who had each suffered at the hands of Affluence’s gang tactics. They were all looking for payback as Elgin locked up with ROH World Television Champion Christopher Daniels at the opening bell. “The Fallen Angel” was quick to execute Last Rites on Elgin then toss him to the floor. Making sure he had the ref’s attention, he took up a chair and decked Big Mike with it. The dumbfounded ref had to call for the bell as Affluence looked to make an early exit, thinking they had pulled a fast one. To their surprise, ROH matchmaker Nigel McGuinness met them at the curtain with a group of security. Nigel stated that they weren’t getting out of this that easy and ordered the ref to restart the match. Affluence refused to return to the ring, impelling Nigel to threaten them all with suspensions if they did not. Daniels and crew reluctantly returned to the ring and the match was restarted.
Daniels almost stole a fast fall against Elgin with a roll up and his feet on the ropes. Sensing it was best to tag out, Daniels brought Kazarian in and the executed a Sit-Down Powerbomb/Neckbreaker combo that saw ACH come in to make the save. A Lariat/Chop Block combo by the Addiction didn’t get the job done either and Adam Cole is tagged in for Affluence. Cole worked on Elgin until he started to make a fiery comeback, at which point Cole rolled out of the ring and grabbed a chair. Elgin took it from him and used it himself. ACH then made the tag and also gave Adam a shot with the chair. ACH’s Big Bang Attack threatened to end the match but Jay Lethal broke up the pin. Alexander came in and worked on Cole some until Adam was able to tag out to Lethal. Cedric took some shots but caught Jay as he was going to the top rope for Hail to the King and brought him down with a backbreaker on the turnbuckle. Dalton Castle tagged in and almost pinned Jay with a Deadlift German Suplex. Lethal withstood Castle’s offense enough to tag Cole back in. Adam put Dalton down with a Panama Sunrise for the win. Affluence made a hasty departure as the Toronto crowd voiced their displeasure and Elgin and Co. came up empty handed in their search for revenge.
