Pariah - Matt Taven? Trouble maker? Damn right! I see him as a much-needed force of chaos. Ha, ha! Champions vs. All Stars is in the books. What started as a dud, and potentially story line sinking contest, turned out to be one hell of a match! Read on!
GLORY BY HONOR XV
October 29, 2016
Chicago Ridge, IL
Matt Sydal def. Dalton Castle by pin
Sydal was a little put off by Castle’s quirky take on the Code of Honor but the duo had a sporting contest, though not lacking in intensity. Dalton controlled the early going with his decided strength advantage. Sydal was able to turn the tide with his daredevil repertoire in and out of the ring. A top rope Frankensteiner by Sydal spelled the end for Castle.
Cheeseburger w/Veda Scott & Joey Daddiego def. Stokely Hathaway by pin
The recent controversy between Veda Scott and Stokely Hathaway led to Stokely’s spontaneous challenge to Cheeseburger, who was white-knighting for Veda, last month at All Star Extravaganza. Hathaway was embarrassed in the match and sought to regain some of his pride after proper preparation for this contest. ROH head of security Joey Daddiego, recently detailed to Veda, made sure to keep himself between Stokely and his charge.
Hathaway’s attempt at redemption ended in further humiliation, losing faster than he did in the first encounter. The two locked up with Cheeseburger reversing a whip into the corner then mounting the turnbuckles to rain shots down on Hathaway. As Stokely stumbled out of the corner after the pummeling, Burger blasted him with Shotei Palm Strike and covered him for a three count. Veda had a good laugh at Stokely expense.
Matt Taven def. ACH by pin
Aside from performing a couple of his spectacular spots midway through the match, ACH was dominated by Taven who focused on his opponent’s neck, setting up the Climax for the win.
The Young Bucks def. The All Night Express by pin
In a rematch from Ring of Honor Television, there was no lack of cockiness on the part of these two teams. It was over fast as the Bucks spiked Kenny King with the Meltzer Driver. Matt Jackson made the cover as his brother Nick blocked Rhett Titus from making the save. With the win, the Young Bucks’ star looked to be on the rise as ANX’s rapid decline continued.
CHAMPIONS VS. ALL STARSAdam Cole, Donovan Dijak, & reDRagon vs. Jay Lethal, Chris Sabin, & The BriscoesThe main event was an 8-man elimination featuring the champions of ROH going up against four of the top stars in the company. Before the bell, there were a couple of intriguing conflicts that showed. Donovan Dijak and Chris Sabin were given instructions by their manager Truth Martini and seemed to reach an accord about their being on opposite teams, at which point Truth left the ring area. ROH World Champion Adam Cole tried coming to terms with his Affluence teammate Jay Lethal who didn’t seem interested in what he had to say. The tension was unmistakable between the two, at least on Lethal’s part.
Jay Briscoe started out against ROH World Television Champion Dijak and was overpowered. One half of reDRagon, the ROH World Tag Team Champions, Bobby Fish tagged in and double teamed Jay with his partner Kyle O’Reilly. Briscoe spiked O’Reilly with a release spinebuster and reached for a tag. It was Lethal who came in and he hit the Lethal Injection on Kyle. Fish had to make the save for his partner. Jay missed Hail To the King and Kyle tried tagging in Cole who refused. Instinctively, O’Reilly caught Lethal in a guillotine choke and almost had Jay tapping out. Kyle tagged Fish back in. Bobby landed some big strikes on Lethal. Mark Briscoe broke up a pin attempt by Fish, who looked to tag Cole in but Dijak made the exchange instead. Feast Your Eyes and Lethal barely kicked out. A lariat send Lethal over the top rope. Defensively, Jay grabbed the ring bell and tried to smash Dijak with it but ended up with Dijak’s boot driving the bell into his own face. Lethal avoided being pinned again and Fish came back in. Jay escaped the clutches of O’Reilly to tag in Mark Briscoe. Mark and Kyle dueled with O’Reilly’s submission work getting the upper hand. Cole finally tagged in, hitting Mark with a Panama Sunrise then a Florida Key for the pin.
Mark Briscoe was eliminated. Sabin came in against the man who beat him for the world title. Cole had Sabin on the defensive but almost got caught with a surprise roll-up, kicking out at two. The two had a fast-paced exchange with Cole executing a Panama Sunrise for two. Cole cunningly slapped Dijak on the chest and ordered him to get in the ring with his House of Truth teammate. Dijak reluctantly gave Sabin some shots and tried for a half-hearted pin then tagged in Fish. Bobby roughed up Chris on the floor then tagged O’Reilly in. Kyle worked over Sabin for a while before Cole tagged back in and pinned Chris after a superkick to the back of the head.
Chris Sabin was eliminated. The All Stars were at a two man deficit as the Jay’s, Lethal and Briscoe, were all that remained of their team. Briscoe entered against Cole and came at him fast and furious but Adam dumped him to the floor and tagged out. Dijak came in and beat down Brioscoe. Jay fought back but took Feast Your Eyes for a two count. Fish returned and tried to make Briscoe submit to a leglock. O’Reilly unsuccessfully tried for a tap out with Armageddon. Cole tried putting Briscoe away with a superkick. Jay just kept going! Dijak with Feast Your Eyes again and Briscoe was done.
Jay Briscoe was eliminated. It was down to Jay Lethal against the full Champions contingent. Lethal told Dijak to bring it on but Cole had Donovan hold back and tagged himself in. Lethal’s nostrils flared but Cole held his hands up, wanting a word with his Affluence mate. Adam urged Jay to retreat and save himself a further beating. Cole said Affluence would still win. Lethal wasn’t hearing it, demanding that Cole fight. Adam tried one more time to convince Jay to withdraw. When Lethal did not comply, Adam said “Have it your way.” As it looked like the two would collide, Cole instead dropped to the mat and rolled out under the bottom rope. He exited, leaving Lethal to his fate, and was counted out of the ring.
Adam Cole was eliminated.Dijak charged Lethal but Jay evaded him and worked the big man into a figure four leg lock. Dijak wouldn’t submit and Jay released the hold and smashed his opponent’s leg against the ring post. Springboard DDT, a Lethal Injection and Jay eliminated the Television Champion.
Donovan Dijak was eliminated.Fish came in and Jay soon put him down with a Lethal Injection as well but Bobby kicked out. O’Reilly tagged in and the Two Man Smash Machine backbreaker/flying knee drop nearly finished Lethal. Jay turned the tables and had Kyle in trouble. Jay fought like a cornered animal against Fish and O’Reilly and they couldn’t get him under control. Two Lethal Injections put away O’Reilly.
Kyle O’Reilly was eliminated. It was down to Lethal and Fish with Jay looking the better man. Hail to the King, Koji Clutch but Fish had his foot on the ropes. Jay dragged Fish to the floor and gave him a Lethal Combination into the ring post. Jay left him laying as the ref made the count. Bobby was out cold and Jay won by count out.
Bobby Fish was eliminated. An exhausted Lethal roared with his last bit of energy, dropping to his knees. Adam Cole reemerged through the curtain with a look of amazement on his face. He then nodded earnestly and clapped his hands, acknowledging Lethal’s achievement. Reinvigorated, Jay got to his feet and beckoned Adam into the ring, saying that he wasn’t done yet. Cole shook his head, asking
“What are you talking about?”Lethal screamed at Cole to get his ass in the ring, calling him a coward. This fired Adam up and he started down the aisle. Matt Taven came out and stopped Cole. Lethal told Taven to stay out of it. Matt responded by saying
“What's the matter with you?” Cole cooled down and he and Taven left the ring area, looking back at the seething Lethal, wondering what his problem was.
