cruefan68 - Lethal slapping Cole was meant to get the ball rolling. I had hoped Jay would beat Taven to keep the momentum going. It won't cause a change of plans but it does disrupt the flow.
Pariah - The Affluence story may be reaching it's climax at Final Battle, which is the next big event. If you are looking for motivations, that is where they might be revealed.
TTX - Cheeseburger & Daddiego beating the Young Bucks may be an upset on paper but the Bucks have never done well for me. So it didn't come as much of a surprise.
SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST 2016
November 26, 2016
San Antonio, TX
Survival of the Fittest QualifierAdam Page def. ACH by pin
This was the first of six qualifying matches for the SotF main event. Page was a surprise entrant, just back from his first tour of Japan. Commentators Kevin Kelly and Steve Corino speculated whether Page would be reuniting with the House of Truth now that he was back. Page returned to ROH action with a newfound vicious streak. He gave ACH a relentless beating, finishing it with a Rite of Passage.
Survival of the Fittest QualifierNick Jackson def. Cheeseburger w/Veda Scott by pin
Jackson was looking for payback after the Young Bucks’ embarrassing loss last week to Cheeseburger and his partner, Joey Daddiego. Cheeseburger frustrated Nick, evading Jackson’s attempts at offense. However, Burger’s moves were also countered and Nick caught him with a superkick. The fan favorite was out and the three count was a formality.
Survival of the Fittest QualifierMatt Jackson def. Joey Daddiego w/Veda Scott by pin
It was the elder Jackson’s turn to avenge last week’s loss. The two ignored the Code of Honor and started brawling. Matt got the upper hand and a near fall after a moonsault. Jackson was in total control in and out of the ring. Joey tried making a comeback but it was short lived. Veda had to cause a distraction to prevent a pin after another moonsault by Jackson. After toying with his opponent for a while, Matt got the pin with a third moonsault. The Young Bucks would both be in the main event.
Survival of the Fittest QualifierChris Sabin w/Truth Martini & Donovan Dijak def. Rhett Titus by pin
Sabin was favored by some to win SotF this year and with the ROH World Television Champion in his corner, along with manager Truth Martini, the odds seemed in his favor. The match started with some good back and forth. Titus began building momentum, putting Sabin in multiple pinning predicaments. Truth was getting antsy and Dijak lent encouragement to his House of Truth teammate. A Thrust Buster by Rhett motivated Truth to cause a distraction to draw the ref away from the pin situation. Sabin rolled out of the way of a frog splash by Rhett and went to work. Titus withstood Hail Sabin and a Cradle Shock but a second Cradle Shock ended it. Sabin escaped a close one to advance.
Survival of the Fittest QualifierMark Briscoe def. Dalton Castle by pin
The two quirky fan favorites had an entertaining exchange before getting down to business. Castle was strong early, getting a two count with a Deadlift German Suplex. Mark surged back, hitting Froggy Bow but Dalton kicked out. Castle made a comeback of his own but Mark cut him off by reversing a corner splash with a lariat out of the corner. Briscoe hooked a leg and got the pin.
Survival of the Fittest QualifierMatt Taven def. Kenny King by count out
There was no shortage of swagger when it came to these two. They talked smack back and forth as they circled before the lockup, so it was no surprise that they came out of the clinch punching and clawing. Kenny turned things up to a frenetic pace, repeatedly knocking Taven to the mat. King hit a Royal Flush for a very close near fall. Down the stretch, each man withstood his opponent’s finisher twice. The deciding factor was the appearance at ringside by ROH World Champion, Adam Cole. As Cole distracted the referee, Taven gave Kenny the Climax onto a opened steel chair on the floor. King would be counted out and Taven was the last man to qualify for the SotF finals.
Michael Elgin & War Machine def. reDRagon & Silas Young by pin
Silas Young joined ROH World Tag Team Champions Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly to take on the powerhouse trio of Michael Elgin, Raymond Rowe and Hanson. Elgin almost won it early with a Buckle Bomb/Elgin Bomb combo on O’Reilly. War Machine then combined for their finisher but Fish saved his partner from the Fallout. O’Reilly was at the mercy of the big men for a while but was able to tag in Fish. Bobby took a beating from Hanson and War Machine combined again for the pin. Young never saw action and left in disgust as reDRagon fell to an impressive threesome.
SURVIVAL OF THE FITTESTMatt Taven vs. Mark Briscoe vs. Chris Sabin vs. Matt Jackson vs. Nick Jackson vs. Adam PageThe referee’s first order of business was to eject Truth Martini from ringside, to the chagrin of Chris Sabin. Page and Taven got the match under way. Taven toyed with his opponent before tagging in Matt Jackson. As expected, the Bucks worked as a unit and almost eliminated Page. Sabin tagged his former(?) House of Truth teammate Page. Chris hit Matt Jackson with a string of high impact moves, culminating with Hail Sabin for the pin.
Matt Jackson was eliminated.Briscoe entered next against Sabin. Chris got a short two count against Mark after Hail Sabin. Nick Jackson slowed Chris’ roll, tagging himself in, angry about his brother’s elimination. Nick got in Sabin’s face but should have been paying attention to the legal man, as Briscoe dropped him with a Saito Suplex and then a Cut-Throat Driver for a near fall. Mark tagged Sabin back in. Nick was ready though and took it to Chris. A wicked superkick capped off a spectacular routine of offense from Jackson and Sabin kicked out at the last moment to avoid elimination. Briscoe tagged back in and hit Sabin with Froggy Bow for a two count. Taven made a blind tag, trying to steal some glory by hitting Chris with the Climax. Sabin again kicked out at two. A second Climax and Sabin kicked out at one! Taven threw everything at Sabin but Chris would not stay down. Sabin was able to tag out and Page was back in. Adam hit a jumping DDT on Taven for the flash pin. Matt was in disbelief, shocked at being eliminated so soon.
Matt Taven was eliminated.Sabin stepped back. He and Page had a face off. Page broke the impasse with a big boot to the gut. Adam got in some good shots but Sabin put an end to Page’s noteworthy return this night with Hail Sabin.
Adam Page was eliminated.Briscoe would be the next to try his hand at taking out Sabin. The two had an exciting volley. Mark was the fresher man and a pair of Saito Suplexes led to Sabin’s ousting.
Chris Sabin was eliminated. It was down to two younger brothers known for being in teams with their siblings. Nick put up a good fight but Mark was the more experienced singles competitor. As Briscoe built steam, it was clear Nick was on the verge of defeat. His brother Matt saw this as well. As Mark walloped Nick around ringside, Matt ran out and blasted Briscoe across the back with a chair. The ref called for the disqualification in a finish that did not please the fans.
Nick Jackson was eliminated. The Bucks put a beatdown on Mark until Jay Briscoe came to his brother’s rescue. Dem Boys rallied and chased off the Bucks. Despite the questionable outcome, Mark Briscoe was the winner of Survival of the Fittest and would receive a shot at the ROH World Championship sometime in 2017.
