Like I said earlier. I am all for expanding the NHL by two teams.
There are far too many franchises right now that are losing money hand over fist for the league to support four more teams. Quite simply two franchises (Florida & Buffalo) could and probably should be moved. Hell even the rechristened "Arizona" Coyotes should be moved.
The NHL should put more focus on putting teams were there is a fan demand. Toronto is the BIGGEST market in the League (in terms of revenue) and the Leafs wouldn't be hit too hard by having another team in the GTA. Atlanta failed twice, Phoenix/Arizona is a failed experiment that should have had the plug pulled YEARS ago. Seattle failed once already, but with Vancouver/Minnesota/Calgary/Edmonton/Colorado all right there Seattle, if they get a team will have numerous rivalries to build upon, which should help that franchise (as long as they competitive right out of the gate). Kansas City has also failed in the past, but that is another story.
Sadly most US teams struggle when they aren't competitive on the ice. Where as the Canadian Teams for the most part generate a profit, or only face low loses. Edmonton is the biggest exception to this rule, but I think once they get there new arena built that could turn things around. Winnipeg is going to need a new arena before long, as I highly doubt there 15,000+ arena will help them to keep making money in the long run.
I honestly can't wait for the day that Gary Bettman either steps down or gets fired. He has been the absolute worst thing that has happened to the NHL, but that is a story for another day.

I love Las Vegas, but just don't think of it as a hockey town.
Of any US sport to be turned into something like the European Soccer League tiered system, I think hockey would be the best. That way you could have a smaller league with mostly traditional powerhouses, but still important teams in less traditional markets or secondary teams in bigger markets that could get promoted/relegated.
I doubt at this juncture it could ever happen, but if any of the 4 major sports were to go that way it would probably be hockey.

Yesterday the season ticket drive for a Las Vegas franchise began. Fans are being asked to make a down payment by paying 10% of a season ticket package with the cheapest season ticket package down payment at 10% offered at $150.
The goal is to demonstrate local interest to the NHL and if Las Vegas does not get an NHL team then the fans get their down payments refunded.
In other news about the NHL stadium currently being constructed behind New York New York, the first college basketball game to be played in that new stadium will be Duke vs UNLV!

Here in Las Vegas, yesterday I drove by the new stadium construction site. Lots of progress since I saw it last time (and I really doubt they are building it for nothing- that is not how things work in this town. )

In another sign that the NHL is looking seriously at possible expansion to Las Vegas, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman will be in Las Vegas on Tuesday to attend the official start of the campaign of season ticket deposits for a Las Vegas franchise.
If this campaign succeeds in its goal of getting 10,000 season ticket deposits, I am optimistic Las Vegas is getting an NHL franchise to play in the $375 million stadium currently being built on the Strip behind New York New York.

I wouldn't think too much on the "Ticket Drive" happening in Vegas. Several Canadian cities held similar drives.
Mind you Bettman didn't want those cities in the NHL and he is all but foaming at the mouth to bring the NHL to Las Vegas. I still don't see Vegas getting an expansion team, they would probably benefit more from a relocated team.
All in all I guess time will tell how things will all play out in the long run. Vegas already hosts the NHL awards and there is talk about having the draft held there every year.
