American actress Charmian Carr, who played the eldest von Trapp daughter Liesl in the film The Sound of Music, has died aged 73. Carr died in Los Angeles after complications from a rare form of dementia, her representative said. In her role in the 1965 film, she famously performed the song Sixteen Going on Seventeen. After leaving the film industry, Carr ran an interior design firm in California. Her mother had arranged for her to audition for the role, although she had had no singing or acting lessons.
Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music was a massive hit, at the time surpassing Gone with the Wind as the highest-grossing film of all time.

Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was killed in a boat crash early on Sunday in Florida, the U.S. Coast Guard said. He was 24 years old.
"The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the loss of Jose Fernandez," the Major League Baseball team said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time."
Fernandez was one of three people killed in the boating incident off Miami Beach, the Coast Guard said. The identities of the two other crash victims were not released.
Emergency crews responded to reports of a 33-foot center console boat overturned on a jetty at about 3:30 a.m. local time (0730 GMT) on Sunday near the Government Cut shipping channel and South Pointe Park, where they found the three deceased passengers, the Coast Guard said.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the incident.
The Marlins canceled its game against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday due to the death of Fernandez, who was the National League rookie of the year in 2013.

Herschell Gordon Lewis, the “Godfather of Gore”, who passed away at the age of 87. No reason for his passing has yet been released but we’ll update as more information comes in. The announcement was broken by Something Weird Video.
Lewis is the man responsible for such films as Blood Feast, Two Thousand Maniacs!, A Taste of Blood, The Gruesome Twosome, Scum of the Earth!, and She-Devils on Wheels, which is only a few of the titles he worked on. Lewis took an extended hiatus from directing after 1972’s The Gore Gore Girls only to return for 2002’s Blood Feast 2: All U Can Eat, the sequel to the 1963 film that is widely considered to be the first splatter film.
Herschell Gordon Lewis was one of Bloody-Disgusting’s first interviews, conducted in 2002. You can read it here.
We send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Lewis. We also want to send our deepest gratitude to a director whose films were the foundation and inspiration for countless filmmakers since.

Coronation actress Jean Alexander - famous for her headscarf and curlers in the role of Hilda Ogden - died yesterday just three days after her 90th birthday. The actress spent 23 years on the soap as the archetypal working class Northern woman. The character was hard-edged busybody but furiously house-proud, particularly of the flying duck ornaments which adorned a mural - or ‘muriel’, as Hilda told guests - in her front room. Jean passed away peacefully in her hospital bed after being admitted to on Tuesday.
