The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus will end "The Greatest Show on Earth" in May, following a 146-year run.
Kenneth Feld, the chairman and CEO of Feld Entertainment, which owns the circus, told The Associated Press declining attendance combined with high operating costs are among the reasons for closing.

Just hard for a circus to compete with all the entertainment options nowadays.

End of an era. Inevitable but sad none the less.

Not surprised. I can't remember the last time I heard of anybody going to... or taking their kids to the circus. And I have a lot of friends with kids. Are there any other traditional circuses left then?

Are there any other traditional circuses left then? There are lots of smaller circuses still out there that are more local. In this area there is the Big Apple Circus. I can't say I'm surprised, as I'm sure animal rights activists also have had a hand in the pressure to close. I personally haven't taken my kids to a circus despite talking about it most years.
