nWo were heels, they sold more merch than anyone. That was a different era with a different audience, though. WWE have spent a lot of the last decade trying to cultivate a younger audience which is why Roman (and Cena before him) selling as much merch to kids as he does is a relevant point as to why they won't turn him heel. There's actually a good chance that some of the younger viewers only watch to see him. If you turn him heel, those kids might not watch anymore and with that goes the money they'd spend on his merch and that, as they showed with Cena and have shown with Roman to this point, isn't a risk they're willing to take. I really dont think it matters either way. All the same people watch wrestling. There's no such thing as a casual fan. Not in the sense we use it. Nowadays a casual fan is just someone who watches RAW and the PPVs each month. Face? Heel? Tweener? Doesn't matter. No new fans to gain or lose regardless. I 100% agree with this in regards to older fans. They're going to watch regardless, probably mostly out of habit, and it doesn't matter who's face or heel because they're going to watch no matter what.

Younger fans are less likely to follow the rules than older fans. They just like what they like. That's why Kylo Ren stuff sells just as much as good guy Star Wars stuff right now. Lesnar and AJ, both heels, both sell tons of stuff. Even James Ellsworth was at one time the top selling t shirt. I really don't think the good guy/bad guy stuff matters w anyone but Cena, who specifically panders to children. Reigns is popular because he's booked to be a top guy, same as Lesnar, Orton, Wyatt (another super popular heel), etc... Would he still be 1? Who knows. But I don't think a heel turn would result in a bunch of disappointed kids burning their RR gear up.

just speaking in general about heels and merchandise, especially outside of the WWE, it seems like some of the biggest merchandise sellers today are heels. For example, you can't go to a show today going whithout seeing Bullet Club shirts. And going to PWG, nobody today sells more merchandise than the Young Bucks and I have seen "The Villain" Marty Scurll sell alot of shirts- perhaps currently the second greatest amount at PWG- too every show (but now that they are the new PWG World Tag Team Champions and obviously going to be at PWG on a regular basis I think Rey Fenix & Penta El Zero M- who are not heels in PWG- will also be among the leaders in merch sales at PWG.)
