Watching Reigns walk back up the ramp last night, I couldn't help but feel like Reigns should maybe retire.
I've never seen a wrestler fail harder at doing his job to get over. Fans hijacking main events cheering for CM Punk when the story is designed to gain empathy for Reigns from the fans...I personally don't hate Reigns - don't like him, he's just...there. But I'm not the guy going to shows and spending big bucks on WWE so my opinion doesn't count. Those that do obviously don't want to see him in any capacity.
I think Vince is most to blame...he refuses to listen to his paying fans, now the best wrestlers he's ever had (Brock) is turning on him. No surprise after that awful build - Reigns complaining about his co worker missing time and getting preferential treatment - UGH - nobody likes a jealous whiner. Vince really thought that would get him over?
What do you guys think?

I also must admit that I'm not much of a WWE fan... So far this year, I haven't watched a single show... But, I do try to stay current with what's happening and I truly believe that Roman's career never recovered from what happened at the 2015 Royal Rumble... I'm simply going to direct everyone to the article posted by TOM in regards to this debacle because in my opinion, it explains everything perfectly... How WWE could have booked Reigns to put him over.In the end, I don't necessarily believe that Vince is as 'out of touch' with what the fans want as many would like us to believe... I really just don't think he gives a damn... After all, his product has no real competition and he's still making plenty of money... Regardless of how often he insults the intelligence (and dedication) of his audience. * On a different note... I have tremendous respect for Brock as an athlete, but truly believe he's horrible for the professional wrestling (aka. sports entertainment) industry... In my opinion --- He's ridiculously repetitive and boring in the ring and his mic skills are non-existent... He does not work well with others unless he deems them worthy of sharing the ring... Anyone can be booked to play the role of an unstoppable monster... Just because he is one on real life, does not make him an entertaining performer... Not in my eyes, at least. |

I have to agree with Pariah on pretty much all points he's just made. As for Brock being an unstoppable monster in real life? I've seen him get the stuffing beat out of him in the UFC at least twice, once to the point where his face was torn open and bloody, so it's hard for me to take him as an unbeatable machine. I think a big problem with things is after decades of everyone in WWE telling us "Wins and losses don't really matter" they're trying to somehow convince us that Brock really can't be beaten. It kind of goes against everything that the 'sports entertainment' side of pro wrestling has become. As for the initial question, I really do think that the fault of Reigns not getting over falls on pretty much everyone involved, but I'm going to say "Vince" for not giving a f*ck about what the fans are obviously not behind. After twenty or so years of the McMahons as the Evil Authority the fans have been conditioned, to a point, to go against everything that they stand for, so when it comes out that Vince really wants Reigns to be the face of the company, there's going to be a large chunk of the fanbase that's going to crap all over that idea. THat's a really oversimplified way of looking at it, sure, but... The fans have been vocal FOR YEARS that they don't like Roman Reigns as 'the guy' so any and all fault in this fall on Vince for refusing to accept that he can't change their minds and is still trying to force Roman on everyone. |

Probably a bit of both. I don't think a 70 year old person should be booking a PG show for 18-40 year olds. He's gotta be out of touch to some degree. Nobody on the roster is over except Brock and AJ. That falls on Vince, and AJ got himself over. Vince had nothing to do w his success. This is what happens when everyone has had the belt at some point. |

Just bizarre in every way. Why would Roman care how often Brock wrestles anyways? Especially for a guy who has been suspended for violating the wellness policy. At one point I seriously wondered if they were trying to turn him into a whiney heel setting up a double turn. That is no way for a hero to act. |

The reason Roman isn’t over is because Vince won’t let him go heel. He’s a natural heel and heels have been in since the attitude era. Let the fans turn him baby like they did Austin, like they did Rock. Seemed to work for them. Plus The hotter the heel, the hotter the Babyface.
That’s how Cena first got over with the whole Thugnomics gimmick. The only reason the fans turned on Cena is because Babyface is synonymous with bland in the WWE. Which is what Roman is anyway.
Well that’s my opinion, I’ve only been back watching wrestling a year and this is the most obvious thing to me. But the WWF isn’t well booked in general. Seems Vince is suffering from what people accused Verne Gagne of in the mid to late 80s.

I'm going to go a different route. Roman is not over because of Roman. Yes, Vince shoves him down our throats and fans generally do not like that. But if Roman improved any in the last 4 years sans The Shield, he would be on the up. Remember in his feud with Cena, when Cena cut a promo on how much Roman sucks at cutting a promo? Has not improved. Ok, maybe it's gotten a little better, but not much. People hate on Cena because of the 5 moves of doom. Cena breaks out a new move once in a while, but he is so predictable with his matches that the fans have turned on him for it. Like against Elias, shoulder tackle, shoulder tackle, duck under the weak ass clothesline attempt, side suplex, you can't C me, FNS, FU, 1-2-3. EVERY. DAMN. TIME. Roman's matches are just as predictable lately. And yes, I know, they all have their little closing routine. Everyone else though, has a variance when they get to it. Except Orton. He has gotten very predictable as well. But that is another discussion for another time.

I'd love to know who thought Roman complaining about his co worker missing work and getting preferential treatment would get him over My theory is/was that by having Roman echo one of the average fan's biggest complaints about Brock, it would get the fans to go 'oh shit he's right, we want to see him beat Brock!' and then WrestleMania happened and it was clear that didn't work at all. Vince is the problem more than anyone else. Roman (and almost everyone else who works for WWE) has to work with the material they're given and what they've done is basically tried to make Roman into every other top guy they've ever had and in the process he's lost any idtentity he had. One week he's going at Vince like he's Austin, the next he's superman Cena, the next he's channeling The Rock. You can't expect an audience to get behind a character who doesn't even know who they are. The 'conspiracy' angle is weird. They did it with Austin 20 years ago, except Austin had reason to be mad and at no point got beaten cleanly be the people he believed were conspiring against him. Roman got beat flat and comes out and whines about it? Come on. That's shitty booking. |
