Let me preface by saying that yes, I know that the 2087 horse has been beaten to death, but hear me out.
When I originally played 2087 (way back when), I was not nearly the booking genius I am now, haha. So, here's a new spin on the Star Warrior-Thantos storyline that I plan to do when my re-booted Classics fed reaches this crucial point...
-As the canon goes, Cosmos will become Thantos, ice pick, yada yada yada.
-I plan to have Thantos beat Omega and abolish the Galaxian Code at my "Revolution" (WrestleMania) PPV at the end of 2086. Plus, he will injure Omega and put him on the shelf for months, thus causing Omega to return as a complete shell of himself (thus explaining his downgraded card). I hope to have this as the main event of the card, but with the code at stake and not the Galaxian Title. Hopefully, the champion will be Hechilles or Mighty Grogan (some favoring certain dice rolls or fudging might be involved, but oh well, bookers gotta book, haters gonna hate), who will successfully defend the title against Wolf. To simplify the rest of this post, let’s just say the champion is Hechilles.
-This will serve two purposes. First, although I plan to have Wolf lose, Brute and Massacre will become jealous of his title opportunity and thus the Gladiator split happens.
-Secondly, Hechilles is pissed that the Thantos/Omega/Star Warrior saga has become more important than the Galaxian Title, and he’s just tired of all the drama.
-Also, due to all the mounting violence in the GWF, it’s investor company has pulled out and many other wrestlers bolt for greener pastures. The company is in a bad place.
-So, this leads us to the first card of 2087. The weekly show opens with the Commissioner coming out to sadly accept that the Code has been abolished, etc.
-He is interrupted by the champ Hechilles, who cuts a scathing promo, bitching about how he hasn’t been respected, the Code drama is a higher priority, etc. He then tosses the belt at the Commissioner, quits, and puts up an “X”, signaling that he is going to the WGX (think Montreal Screwjob when Bret Hart spelled WCW). DAMN! Speechless, the Commissioner simply walks back up the aisle.
-Later on that night (after a couple filler matches), the Commissioner announces that a 1-night tournament to crown a new champion will take place on the next show.
-In said tournament, Star Warrior reaches the semifinals but gets taken out by whoever (Evil Ones, etc.) on behalf of Thantos who beats whoever (Commander Sam, etc.) to win the tournament and become the new champion.
-This is where we get into the meat and potatoes of the angle. Star Warrior wants a piece of Thantos and wants to beat him for the title. Thantos wants to toy with Star Warrior and tells him he must go through a gauntlet and beat ALL OTHER 11 VILLIAN WRESTLERS before he can face him.
-Wanting to re-build interest in the company and milk this angle for all he can (leading to a huge payoff at the next Revolution PPV), the Commissioner AGREES with Thantos and bans Star Warrior from touching Thantos until he can beat all 11 other villians!
-My game year is 30 cards long, consisting of 6 “sections” which each cover a 2-month period. I figure I can have Star Warrior face (and hopefully beat) two wrestlers per section. We would start with the low-end jobbers (Mutant, Vanity, etc.) and he would work his way up, finally earning a title shot against Thantos at Revolution. If he would happen to lose a bout (even by DQ or countout), there’s always re-matches. Basically, he can’t move on to the next villain on the ladder until he beats the current one.
-I could also kill the other time by putting Star Warrior in tag matches and such.
-I could also keep the belt on Thantos by giving him favoring dice rolls in matches. Or, if by some chance he would lose the title, I could say it was due to Star Warrior’s interference and hopefully hotshot the title back to Thantos.
-What I’m getting at here is a slow build towards the most anticipated GWF match of all time (in 2087 anyway).
Based on Rahl ratings (give or take), here would be Star Warrior’s order of opponents…
Death Knight -8
Vanity 7
Mutant 7
Ghengis Khan 12
Killer Queen 23
Brute 29
Massacre 34
Krakan 35
Exo-King 38
Executioner 18 (I figure he should face Thantos’ two main henchmen last, so that’s why there’s some disorder here)
Comrade Terror 36
Thantos 52
PRO TO THE ANGLE
I’m not a big Star Warrior fan. I always saw him a spoiled brat who got a lot of free passes because Omega is his dad. IMHO, a lot of my fed’s fans feel this way too. In fact, some of them (probably smarks) support Thantos. However, if he could pull this off (even if he loses at Revolution), I think it would build respect and “street cred” for him.
CON TO THE ANGLE
If Star Warrior wins at Revolution, he has already beat all the villians on the roster. There aren’t any “what ifs” until Bishop Hell and Spike show up in 2088 (and I’m going to slow burn those match build-ups too, no pun intended). But this isn’t a huge deal, as rematches with Thantos would happen and sneak attacks from other heels could always start new angles. I mean, it’s the 80’s, it’s not that complicated, LOL.
IN CLOSING
So, what are your thoughts? Is this a different spin on a classic angle or are you yawning and rolling your eyes? Please be honest. Also, has anyone else done a similar angle like this? Feel free to share your thoughts, and be cool!
