A lot of mixed messages with the product so far. Is this "sports entertainment" or will wins and losses matter?

I've seen Cassidy and he should be a squash match guy putting over other talents.

It’s looking like sports entertainment w wins/losses counting. I don’t think we are getting a UFC light.
Almost every wrestling company has (or has had) goofy shit. AJPW used to have comedy matches w senior citizens. ROH is having the Briscoes defend their tag belts against two 70 yr old men who’s asses I would kick (& that’s not goofy or unrealistic at all), Cornette had mummies, current inter gender wrestling trend, etc...

Mike says it great here. Despite the mixed messages they are sending and the unknown, I've been a wrestling fan for the past 38 years and have gone through the highs and lows like I'm sure we all have. But I can honestly say, no matter what AEW does or ends up doing, this is the MOST excited I have been for anything in wrestling since the late 90s when I had to decide which PPV I would get that month WWE or WCW as I was more limited in funds back then and couldn't buy all of them LOL. Whether AEW does great (which I'm personally hoping they do) or flop hard...........as fans, we are the ones that are winning big time this year as everyone is starting to step up their game.

I like Orange Cassidy and I think he's a good wrestler but his shtick is going to get old quickly and might deter new fans from continuing with the product. Here's what Dave Meltzer said about the signing in this week's Observer.

Orange Cassidy was announced as signing here. This one is controversial for a lot of reasons. Cassidy gets over great to the indie audience but is very polarizing. When I saw him at PWG, the crowd went nuts for his act but it really felt like something that you don’t want every show. And, in fact, he hasn’t been back since, although he is at BOLA (and he’ll do great there because they are so loaded with great wrestlers that he’s different from everyone on the show which is the key to why he gets over). When I saw him at WrestleCon, he was a surprise and the place went crazy for him but there was a percentage of the audience that absolutely hated the gimmick. I mean, furiously hated. They were the minority. At AEW, he got over live pretty good and the act is entertaining in its way, but to me, when it comes to the early days of establishing the television product, I don’t think you want extreme silliness. Once the brand is established, the idea of him coming in once and evaluating from there I’d do, and actually I think he’d get over great as something different. He’ll probably get over big live because the audience that buys tickets for the most part will know him, and even the ones that don’t will react well to his trademark spots the first time. He can actually wrestle if need be and what he does takes talent and he’s good at it. He could be their Toru Yano, and Yano is effective within a relatively serious New Japan framework. But Yano in the U.S. works because most people who go to New Japan have been watching for a few years and get him as part of the show, as opposed to AEW where the key is for at least the first several months to establish the brand and product to a new audience and anything that turns people off or thinks this isn’t what they want, that this is why they checked out of wrestling, that audience, having him early is a risk. Many many other new fans will love him and I know people who were really excited about AEW signing him. My thought is early on the negatives are stronger than they would be in four to six months, once the product is established and the talent is over to the television audience, because at that stage one silly gimmick won’t be a negative and actually he could be a big positive. By then people are more accepting of some silliness to go along with a great main event scene. The two things I’m not sure of is how he would play to the masses, and he might play well, and also the legs on the gimmick. To me, it’s an attraction that’s cool when used correctly. But if he becomes a weekly character he has to eventually drop the aspect of the gimmick that makes him what he is, because that will run its course. We were told that based on the plans they have for him, that he’s going to be booked in a manner that people won’t mind and it will be entertaining to most. There was also an ad sales meeting with TNT where Cassidy was brought up and the response was extremely favorable

the brilliance of Omega v Okada,
Chikara’s silliness,
the Spectacle of the WWE,
grumpy old managers w Tennis Rackets,
the Evolution of Female Wrestling,
70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 00’s, 10’s & beyond
I could watch Bobby Heenan and Gorilla Monsoon argue for hours on end

Lumping in the Briscoes vs RNR with comedy acts is off base. It's all about intent. That match will at least be portrayed as a competition rather than a farce.

And I would pay to see you try to kick Robert Gibson's ass. LOL

I don’t think it’s comedy, I think it’s competively absurd. But everything being “fake”, how could the Briscoes turn down Wrestling one of the best teams ever. Can’t get a much better name on the resume.

People who defend the really dumb shit in wrestling will do whatever they can to try to make their argument, no matter how obtuse or ridiculous it sounds in the end. You know that. Also, since the RnR have proven time and time again that they can still go, they're a legitimate threat to the Briscoes. It blows my mind that people think that's on the same level as all the stupid shit going on right now. It's not.

Punky and Hoot could still probably knock the dick off of 80% of the people who call them old and washed up tbh. Then again, they come from an era where you actually had to know how to fight and be a tough guy.
