Beat the Bug Showdown: GWF 2089 Tournament 04.03.2089 from Chicago, IL
Thantos vs. Galactic Punisher Thantos defeated Galactic Punisher with THE MASTERLOCK at 16:19 Match Rating: 4.00 Match Notes: Great start to this tournament. The action see-sawed nearly the whole way. Maybe Galactic Punisher had a bit of an advantage, but Thantos never let him dominate too long.
Both escaped early pin attempts and there was a wild brawl on the outside about half-way through the match.
The finish saw Punisher trying to build a head of steam, but Thantos came off the ropes with a big shoulder tackle and then a running clothesline led to THE MASTERLOCK. There was no escape. Thantos moves on!
Mad Jester vs. Mesmer Mesmer defeated Mad Jester with a BLACKOUT at 4:30 Match Rating: 3.00 Match Notes: Despite a short time in ring, they set a lightning back and forth pace until they collided in a double clothesline off the ropes. Mesmer was up first and locked in BLACKOUT to get the submission victory.
Star Warrior vs. Bishop Hell Bishop Hell defeated Star Warrior with a DQ at 10:51 Match Rating: 3.25 Match Notes: This was a great back and forth athletic contest, but Bishop hell was sensing defeat and rolled outside. They brawled around the ringside area and as Star Warrior charged Bishop Hell pulled the ref in front of him and Star Warrior leveled him!
When the ref got up he DQ'd Star Warrior! The fans were hot and Star Warrior tried to plead his case, but to no avail... Bishop Hell steals one.
Comrade Terror vs. Commander Sam Commander Sam defeated Comrade Terror with an abdominal stretch at 3:37 Match Rating: 2.75 Match Notes: They went back and forth in the opening moments, but Terror ended up on top and stretched Sam with the clutch, but Sam would mount a comeback and punish Terror with Sam's Slam and a near fall!
He locked in an abdominal stretch and would not let up. Eventually, in great pain, even Comrade Terror was left with no choice but to submit!
They brawled after the bell and Sam sent Terror packing to the fan's delight. Terror looked hurt and may have to have some injuries tended to, but Sam moves on!
Spike vs. Battering Ram Battering Ram defeated Spike with an Ani-Men Axe Handle at 17:25 Match Rating: 4.25 Match Notes: The momentum shifts in this one came often as neither man could sustain offense for too long in spite of a couple of pin fall attempts by both.
Battering Ram may have had the slight edge, but that's debatable. Spike was building a head of steam at hit the Atomic Spike, but when he sent Battering Ram into the ropes, he put his head down and paid the price. Ram hit a big head butt and then the Ani-Men Axe Handle to score the 1, 2, 3!
Damn good match. This might be a slight upset, but Battering Ram earned this win - no doubt about it.
Lord Nexus vs. Invincible Krakan Lord Nexus defeated Invincible Krakan with a TITAN DROP at 9:21 Match Rating: 3.50 Match Notes: These two had a great match. They jockeyed for position early, but Nexus came out on top and pressed his advantage looking for an early win with multiple TITAN DROPs. He also hit a beautiful plancha to the outside that had the crowd on their feet.
Krakan would rally, though, and the action see-sawed. He even scored a near fall with a Krakan Skullcrusher.
It wouldn't be enough and in spite of making Nexus work for it, the Titan was able to sustain some offense and chop Krakan down with some karate chops and hit another TITAN DROP for a decisive win.
Wolf vs. Bounty Hunter Wolf defeated Bounty Hunter with a running clothesline at 6:55 Match Rating: 2.50 Match Notes: Bounty Hunter tried to end it early hitting a Bounty Skullcrusher at the bell for a near fall. But Wolf came back and ran wild. He even locked in the SAVAGE FACE CLAW, but miraculously, Bounty Hunter escaped!
Wolf didn't let up, though, and try as he might Bounty Hunter couldn't mount much of an offense. He kept kicking out of pin attempts but it only served to lengthen the beating Wolf laid on him.
The finish saw Wolf hit a big running clothesline on a beaten down Bounty Hunter for the 1, 2, 3.
Exo-King vs. Massif Massif defeated Exo-King with a VOLCANIC DROP at 0:31 Match Rating: 0.10 Match Notes: Uh... No one told Exo-King he had a match apparently. Massif hit an overhead toss and then went up top and came down with a ring-shaking VOLCANIC DROP for the 1, 2, 3 in less than a minute!
Thantos vs. Mesmer Mesmer defeated Thantos with a flying dropkick at 14:04 Match Rating: 3.75 Match Notes: Great contest. Mesmer had Thantos off his game from the opening bell and worked him over the Demon Grip and a sleeper hold. He wore him down considerably and even as Thantos mounted a comeback, you could tell the Gamemaster wasn't as in charge as his nickname implies.
Thantos scored a near fall with a flash pin combo off the ropes, but Mesmer stayed in it.
They battled back and forth with a combination of holds and strikes. Thantos went for big moves and dirty tactics, but Mesmer came back and hit a flying dropkick out of nowhere to stun Thantos for the 1, 2, 3!
Big win for Mesmer as an easy tournament favorite is out of the running.
Bishop Hell vs. Commander Sam This match ended in a draw (Double DQ) at 7:25 Match Rating: 2.50 Match Notes: Commander Sam went after Bishop Hell after an opening bell misstep by the fiery villain and didn't let up.
He worked Hell over with a gut wrench and controlled the pace. He scored a near fall with a skull crusher and then followed it up with big move after big move.
Sam eventually clocked him with SAM'S ATOMIC DROP, but Bishop Hell got the shoulder up!
The action spilled outside and two frustrated and fired up competitors went at it! The ref tried to get them back in the ring, but they disregarded his instructions time and time again and the ref eventually had no choice but to throw the match out!
Both men are out of the tournament! Wow!
Battering Ram vs. Lord Nexus Battering Ram defeated Lord Nexus with a shoulder tackle at 12:07 Match Rating: 3.75 Match Notes: Damn good bout. They went back and forth and each played to their strengths. It was power vs agility in many ways, but both men brought so much more to the table.
Spot of the match and potentially of the night saw Lord Nexus hit a springboard moonsault to Battering Ram on the outside. At this point a lot of folks thought it was Lord Nexus' match for sure but Battering Ram keeping hanging tough.
Eventually they were going hold for hold, both men a bit worse for wear and as they reversed reversals, Battering Ram came out on top and hit a bone crushing shoulder tackle that scored a 1, 2, 3!
Wolf vs. Massif Massif defeated Wolf with a VOLCANIC DROP at 2:06 Match Rating: 0.10 Match Notes: Wow! Massif will not be denied. He worked a headlock briefly and then dealt with a reversal by hitting a huge overhead slam for a near fall, a head butt, and then the VOLCANIC DROP for the 1, 2, 3.

Round 1
Thantos over Galactic Punisher with the MASTERLOCK. Thantos just toyed with his opponent the entire match...Punisher never got any offense going. Mad Jester over Mesmer with the JAGGED EDGE. Mesmer had the Jester in BLACKOUT, but the Royal Overlord created chaos by ringing the bell early; Jester took advantage and stole a win. Star Warrior over Bishop Hell via disqualification. A good contest, but Bishop Hellโs HELLFIRE drew the DQ. Commander Sam defeated Comrade Terror by disqualification. Both men fought hard, but emotions flared outside the ring when Terror repeatedly bashed Sam with a chair. Invincible Krakan over Lord Nexus via FALLING FACE SLAM. Right before the finish, Ghengis Khan came out and pummeled Trainer Jim; after the match, the Society of Death continued the assault! Battering Ram over Spike via disqualification after Spike powerbombed Ram through the announce table. Massif defeated Exo-King with a VOLCANIC DROP. Despite the Overlordโs best efforts, Massif dominated the contest. Bounty Hunter over Wolf with a Guile-less AMBUSH. In the beginning of the match, Amazonia took out Guile with a devastating blow from her shield. Both men battled hard, but Hunter came out on top.
Round 2
Thantos squashed the Mad Jester, with Overlord throwing in the towel when Thantos was continually choking Jester on the ropes. Star Warrior dominated Commander Sam, quickly ending the match with a NOVA LAUNCH. Battering Ram pummeled Krakan, putting him down with a BATTERING RAM. After an epic battle between two big men, Massif lost to Bounty Hunter via DQ after he ripped up the recently reconstructed announce table and threw it at Bounty Hunter.
Semi-Finals
Star Warrior and Thantos had another classic, with each one going on streaks of offense. Star Warrior won a count-out victory after an exhausted Thantos could not beat the 10-count. Bounty Hunter and Battering Ram were both disqualified after brawling outside the ring. The battle escalated when Wolf, the AniMen, and the Gladiators came out and created a whirlwind of studs, fur, blood, and rage. No one really gained control of the situation...the brawl just continued to move until it exited the arena to the streets.
Finals Star Warrior wins with a bye!
