J.J. Dillon--why is he wearing American flag ring gear? I never thought of him as a patriotic wrestler. Here is one of the reference pics Werner used: images.app.goo.gl/EXjgfC341BJNRP8Z6. I doubt he was doing a patriotic gimmick like "Hacksaw" Duggan or Del Wilkes. He was probably more of a cocky heel wearing the American flag. I could be wrong though. That is actually a 60's (early 70's) Bohemian look. This kind of outfit was popular at one point (long before my time). Not sure of the year that Dillon wore it but that color scheme was popular during the bicentennial.

Did he used that look when wrestling in Japan?

There were a few instances of masked wrestlers and tag teams who wore Del Wilkes-esque gear but were otherwise standard masked heels in the '70s. The rise in American patriotism didn't really ramp up until the Reagan Administration. I'm speculating a lot here but at least before 1980-81 I also wonder if star-spangled gear played differently in the South than in other areas of the country. There certainly was no shortage of "Mighty Yankee"/"Blue Yankee" heel gimmicks in the '60s and '70s.

*Sigh* A week out and still nothing... If Canada starts getting theirs before me, I might riot, lol

I don't have an answer for the outfit, but having read J.J's book, I can say that he was a heel for 95% of his career, so most likely he was wearing the red, white, and blue to piss someone off.

I am inclined to agree with hawkwarriors comment as he was an active wrestler during bicentennial years and all. Even the Valiants wore some combination of red-white-blue at times.
The only other idea is I also have read results where a masked heel team named the Patriots wrestled in the Amarillo area. Perhaps he was associated with them? I do not think he donned the hood but maybe he did and kept the gear.

So had a debut match with the Briscoes vs. Ivan Koloff and Baron Von Raschke and well that turned from a match into a battle. Raschke gets DQ'ed. Instant feud and battle on the outside and Koloff injures Jack Brisco for 8 fight cards.

Quite the wild start. Should be a really good feud.

If i look at the reference picture of Dillon, then i would says he is around 30 by age. He was born in 1942,so that would set the time to begin of the 70s.
