AEW kind of reminds me of Chikara from 8-10 years ago except without as many masks. Very spot heavy and less realistic fighting for many of the matches. Heavy doses of comedy and nostalgia. One can enjoy it on its surface only so far, but those that go beyond the main product into the internet subculture are the only ones who really understand everything going on. Much of it is booked for the super fans that want to dig deep and also like that style of wrestling. Also nearly half the AEW roster was in Chikara 8-10 years ago. Both that time period of Chikara and AEW now are squarely in my wheelhouse of what I like, but I am certainly in the minority of wrestling fans.

I think one problem as I see it with the Bucks is so many of their moves are choreographed. Meaning the other guy is assisting in the move or waiting for them to hit the move. So much flying around, diving, but in my view the same as the strong style non-stop back and forth ungodly devastating move after move and they kick out over and over. Comes a point where you are just saying ok let's have a finish.

I always likened PWG and the Young Bucks style to an NBA All-Star Game. It's fun to watch once in the while but not what I want to see on a regular basis because the real thing is better. Their attitude, irreverence, and over-choreographed matches were okay in small doses, but once the Bucks crossed over and you got to see everything that they do, and on a steady basis in ROH & NJPW, I got burned out on them real fast. And they really come across as marks for themselves which is kinda weak. But really, my main gripe with the Bucks is that their success has inspired a whole slew of imitators who are half as talented and the indy scene is getting saturated with silly acts predicated on smarky in-jokes.

I'm disappointed with AEW. I was hoping it was a an alternative to WWE but really it's just another WWE.

One thing I give the Bucks credit for is helping bring back tag team wrestling. When I watch a tag match I like double team moves sprinkled throughout the match. For awhile tag team wrestling was getting to feel like a singles match where guys would tag out one or the other. The only double teaming was the occasional beat down by the heel team. It felt less like tag team wrestling and more like synchronized singles wrestling.

Speaking of AEW, I have not seen last night's show yet but I heard that CWFH's current Hollywood Heritage Champion Ray Rosas debuted in AEW last night. PPRay...All day!

I'm disappointed with AEW. I was hoping it was a an alternative to WWE but really it's just another WWE. Every promise that AEW made about there product at the start, they have broken. A sports based alternative to WWE - what a joke. I tried to watch it. I really did. Despite the silliness, bad booking, terrible women’s division, most matches being to long, I kept watching for that match or two each week that might be ok. But after 6 months I just couldn’t take it anymore. I tried to like it but that’s the problem isn’t it? You shouldn’t have to try to like something. You just do. I don’t like AEW and haven’t watched it since probably the third crowd-less show or thereabouts. I’m a longtime ROH guy. And while they haven’t been very good for a while now, they are at least attempting the Pure Title stuff that is more up my alley. Hopefully it works.

A sports based alternative to WWE - what a joke. I think this was something that was misrepresented by AEW or at least not properly explained. Tony Khan is a big stats guy. Apparently he has been booking Dynamite by computer simulation for decades. So I believe when they mentioned sports based presentation they were probably referring more to the tracking of Win-Loss records and updating weekly rankings that play into the booking of the show. People assumed it was more of the wrestling that would be sports based, but I don't think that was ever the plan.

I like how aceldamas compares the Young Bucks and PWG to an All Star game (it makes PWG's All Star Weekends definitely seemed appropriately named.) I first saw the Young Bucks wrestle live at PWG at Threemendous II while sitting in the front row with cman and throwingtoasters at PWG's Threemendous II show in Reseda in a match against 2 Skinny Black Guys (Human Tornado and El Generico) and I was immediately hooked and they became my favorite tag team and at PWG the Young Bucks put on some of the greatest tag team matches I have ever seen live. But if my first exposure to the Young Bucks was not front row live at PWG in a venue with the most insane atmospheres (the old Legion Hall) I have ever witnessed for live shows, I am not sure the Young Bucks would have appealed to me so much (for example I did not think the Matt Jackson/Tony Schiavone backstage phone incident this week on AEW was funny at all.) The Young Bucks will always have a place in my Indy feds and I am definitely looking forward to buying their book when it gets released in November (I might actually pre-order it this weekend.) On a side note about the Young Bucks and PWG, these were some of my favorite Young Bucks PWG matches that I got to see live (not ranked in order:) Young Bucks vs Super Smash Brothers vs Future Shock in a 3 way tag ladder match at Threemendous III Young Bucks vs Peligro Abejas! (Paul London and El Generico) vs The Cutlers in a Guerrilla Warfare match at Seven Young Bucks and Kenny Omega vs Lucha Brothers and Flamita at BOLA 2017 Night 2 Young Bucks vs Kevin Steen and El Generico at BOLA 2009 Night 2 Young Bucks vs World's Cutest Tag Team at Eleven. Young Bucks vs Future Shock at Steen Wolf Young Bucks vs Ricochet and Matt Sydal at All Star Weekend 12 Night 2 Young Bucks and Adam Cole vs Will Ospreay, Mayy Sydal, and Ricochet at BOLA 2016 Night 2 Young Bucks vs Lucha Brothers vs Matt Sydal/Ricochet at Nice Boys Don't Play Rock N' Roll

(for example I did not think the Matt Jackson/Tony Schiavone backstage phone incident this week on AEW was funny at all.) It had potential but was botched. Matt felt to much like he was going thru a bit instead of coming off naturally reacting. The one good part was when tried to stuff the money in Tony's pocket and it was not a functioning one. They should have rolled with that and had Matt give a little extra so Tony could buy a real jacket with a real pocket. I think the Elite are writing these segments themselves and not bothering to get any feedback from another source. Hopefully the get better over time. Impact has had some bad segments in the past but they are getting better. Either way both are still better than most of the ones you see from WWE.
