Jim Weatherly, who earned headlines as a star quarterback at the University of Mississippi, but ultimately garnered greater success for writing such enduring songs as “Midnight Train to Georgia” and “You’re the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me,” both of which were enormous hits for Gladys Knight & the Pips, died at his home yesterday (February 3, 2021). No cause of death was revealed; Weatherly was 77.
