I was a big fan of The Patriot when Global first started. He won the North American Title tournament, but Al Perez had his foot on the ropes. The referee didn't see it, but Patriot gave up the title because the pinfall was disputed. Who does that? No one except The Patriot! RIP Del Wilkes. I remember that like it was yesterday! I was instantly hooked on the GWF on ESPN in the summer of 1991 and LOVED The Patriot! It was super cool how he won BOTH title tournaments! I was also a big fan of his work as The Trooper in the dying AWA and as soon as The Patriot did his first interview I knew exactly who it was! I listened to Del Wilkes' interview on the Steve Austin podcast a few years ago and had no idea he has fell so deep into drug addiction. It seems as if he had found happiness and I hope the last years of his life were filled with joy. This one stings. R.I.P. |

Now this one really hits close to home. He was my favorite when I was very young and first getting into wrestling. His "dastardly" turn on Hulk Hogan is what really cemented me as an anti-Hulkamaniac and a fan of the heels.
