As I posted in my GLCW write-up, I am going to run a TV taping format with one big card/house show at the end of each game month. I am legitimately playing out all the TV shows as one card, just as in the old days when promotions did several weeks of TV on one night. I will post the entire taping results but list as I imagine they would air. Of course, there's more promos and ads that I won't list, as I will try to keep it concise. Typically, I will feature wrestlers that will be wrestling on that month's house show, sometimes more than once. I'm still figuring out this format, as I wanted do something different from my USWA. Numbers in parenthesis are fatigue count.
Great Lakes Championship Wrestling TV Tapings
May 8, 2021
Treasure Island Resort & Casino: Red Wing, MN
Show 1: May 8 (Aired on tape delay)
1) Baron Von Raschke was victorious in the first match on the new TV show with a pinfall on Nacho Barrera. The “Clawmaster” hit an atomic drop and applied the claw hold to pin the Mexican grappler’s shoulders to the mat in about 2½ minutes. Von Raschke was interviewed by Mick Karch and said he looks forward to competing in singles and tags with Johnny Saint, applying the claw hold, and “That is all the people need to know!”
2) Jim Brunzell and Jerry Lynn made short work of Tom “Rocky” Stone and Bun Boy Barton. Brunzell got a quick advantage on Stone, stunning him with a jumping knee smash. He tagged in the young Lynn, who immediately hit his cradle piledriver to score the pin in about a minute before the masked Barton could wrestle. The fans gave the Minnesotans a big ovation for their win! In an interview with Mick after, Brunzell said they are excited for a rematch with the Rock ‘n Roll Express for the Great Lakes Tag Team titles on May 30 in St. Paul! Lynn said they have also signed to battle the Long Riders in three weeks here on TV! He said that they will regret using that bullwhip on Lynn!
Video aired of the Great Gama’s match with Dan “The Beast” Severn in the “B” bracket of the Great Lakes championship tournament. This match took place on November 29, 2019 at the Brown County Arena in Ashwaubenon (neighboring Green Bay). Many wrestling experts had thought that the Indian grappler would get the win but Severn surprised him with a rear naked choke and forced a tap out in four minutes!
3) The Great Gama, accompanied by Theodore R. Long, pinned Jake “The Milkman” Milliman (2) in about five minutes. Milliman put up a fight but couldn’t match Gama’s wrestling skills and got pinned after one of Gama’s throws. In an interview afterward, Long told Mick that Gama wants Big Van Vader to come back to the U.S. and get back in the ring with him! He said that he will pay any price to get the man from the Rocky Mountains back in Great Lakes Championship Wrestling!
“Ringside” Ralph previewed the May 30 card at the Historic Mounds Theater in St. Paul! (See description at the end of the taping.)
4) Mad Dog Vachon was victorious over Red Tyler in about four minutes. The Algerian probably could have won the match more quickly but was so content in dishing out punishment that Tyler rallied back and almost pulled off the upset. Tyler got overzealous on a dropkick and crashed hard to the mat. Vachon hit a double foot stomp and then for good measure hit his piledriver to get the pinfall. Vachon told Mick that the wrestling world had just seen a “small taste” of what he was going to do to Dan “The Beast” Severn in three weeks in St. Paul and that the Great Lakes Heavyweight championship would be his!
Show 2: May 15
1) “Cowboy” Bob Orton, Jr. pinned Jake “The Milkman” Milliman in two minutes. Orton wore a cast into the ring on his right arm. Referee Brent Filmore told Orton not to use the cast and he obliged, still having enough strength to execute his superplex for the pinfall. Mick Karch asked Orton about the cast. The “Cowboy” claimed that his former partner Manny Fernandez injured him in an attack and that he had to go to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester for surgery! He said he doesn’t understand how fans could cheer such a man but he will show the wrestling world what a true hero looks like when he and the “Ragin’ Bull” tangle in St. Paul on May 30!
A video aired of Ed “Strangler” Lewis and Great Lakes Heavyweight champion Dan “The Beast” Severn in training for the WWWA World Heavyweight title tournament on May 20 in Rio de Janeiro!
2) The Long Riders defeated Red Tyler (2) and Todd Becker. Fans didn’t get to see the former football player Becker wrestle, as the Irwins kept Tyler in the ring for the entire match. They used Scott “Hog’s” steel toe boots and even snuck in “Wild” Bill’s bullwhip, when referee Billy J. was distracted. With about 30 seconds left in the 10-minute time-limit bout, Scott hit his superplex on Tyler to score the pin, while Bill kept Becker at bay. In an interview after, the Long Riders said they plan to make Minnesota proud and capture the Great Lakes Tag Team titles! They will battle the champions the Rock ‘n Roll Express in a non-title bout on next week’s show!
3) “The Russian Lion” George Hackenschmidt scored a dominant win over Tom “Rocky” Stone. Hackenschmidt used his wrestling prowess and strength to get a submission on Stone with his Russian bear hug. Evan “Strangler” Lewis came out and spoke for Hackenschmidt, saying he is ready for Frank Gotch in two weeks!
Video was shown of Gotch and Hackenschmidt’s match from the “A” bracket of the Great Lakes title tournament on January 19, 2020 at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester. Gotch was lacerated in this match and “The Russian Lion” controlled much of the action until the Iowan reversed a throw which sent Hackenschmidt to the arena floor. Upon returning, Gotch got the win shortly thereafter with his famed Gotch toehold after 16 minutes of intense action!
4) “The Ragin’ Bull” Manny Fernandez (2) battled “Ravishing” Randy Rose (1) to a 15-minute time-limit draw. Rose was accompanied by the leader of the Diamond Exchange—Diamond Dallas Page. Fernandez hit a scoop slam in the opening minutes for a two-count. Page got involved when Billy J. wasn’t looking, giving Rose the advantage for much of the match. Rose scored near falls after a clothesline and his Rose Bomb (a reverse splash off the second turnbuckle). With time running out, Rose missed a second Bomb. Both men were hurting but Manny managed to cover Rose. Billy counted two but right before three, the bell rang! You can bet that Fernandez will want a rematch!
The Great Lakes Heavyweight champion Dan “The Beast” Severn appeared at Treasure Island. He thanked the fans for their support and patience in getting back to wrestling in Minnesota and Wisconsin. He said that Mad Dog Vachon had to bite him to win but he feels that he is the superior wrestler. He said that he plans to hold on to the Great Lakes gold and capture the WWWA World title! (This was taped before the tournament in Rio de Janeiro on May 20.)
“Ringside” Ralph previewed the May 30 card at the Historic Mounds Theater in St. Paul, as well as next week’s show!
Show 3: May 22
1) The Great Gama defeated Jimmy Doo (1) in about four minutes. Doo had a brief flurry of offense but the Indian grappler stopped him with a double leg. Doo got to his feet but Gama threw him and scored the pinfall. Teddy Long repeated that Gama wants Big Van Vader back in the U.S.!
2) Jim Brunzell and Jerry Lynn picked up a tag team win over Nacho Barrera (1) and The Iron Duke (1). The Minnesotans trapped the Mexican grappler in the ring for the final minutes of the match. Barrera kicked out of a bridging German suplex by Lynn. Brunzell came back in and wore Barrera down. He tagged Lynn again, who hit a springboard dropkick to score the pinfall, while Brunzell stopped the Duke. There were about five seconds left in the 10-minute time limit! The fan favorites are ready for another shot at the Rock ‘n Roll Express and are also ready for the Long Riders next week on TV!
3) Frank Gotch picked up a submission win on The Black Panther with his toehold in about two minutes. Gotch indicated in an interview with Mick Karch after that he is ready for George Hackenschmidt. He also wished his ally Ed “Strangler” Lewis good luck in the WWWA World Heavyweight title tournament! (This was taped before the tournament in Rio de Janeiro on May 20.)
Video aired of Gotch and Lewis’ match from November 17, 2019 in St. Paul, where Lewis got the surprising pinfall on Gotch in eight minutes with the Strangler’s Headlock.
4) The Great Lakes Tag Team champions The Rock ‘n Roll Express (Ricky Morton [2] & Robert Gibson [4]) rallied back to defeat The Long Riders (“Wild” Bill Irwin & Scott “Hog” Irwin [4])in a non-title bout! The champs started off the bout hot and hit the double dropkick on Scott a few minutes into the bout. As referee Adam Kennedy was getting Robert back to the Rock ‘n Rolls’ corner, “Wild” Bill Irwin came in and broke up the pin with a knee drop off the second turnbuckle. He then put his brother on top. Kennedy turned around to count but Ricky kicked out. Morton managed to tag to Gibson but the Long Riders trapped him in the ring for several minutes. Gibson kicked out of Scott’s superplex. Bill took over and even snuck in his bullwhip, while Scott distracted Kennedy. Bill dropped Gibson throat-first on the top rope and hit the float kick for a near fall. Bill missed a running sledge on Gibson and accidentally took out Kennedy. With no official, a melee broke out among all four men. “Wild” Bill grabbed the bullwhip again and the Long Riders clotheslined Morton with it. Scott then held Gibson, as Bill was going to whip him, but before he could, Jim Brunzell and Jerry Lynn appeared and took the whip from him! Brent Fillmore came in to take over for Kennedy, as Gibson and Morton recovered and attacked the Irwins. They sent Scott out of the ring and then hit the double dropkick on Bill. Morton covered Bill and scored the pinfall after 14 minutes! Brunzell and Lynn congratulated the Great Lakes champs on their win, while the Irwins were outraged! The brothers indicated that they would see Brunzell and Lynn in the ring on next week’s show! ***¾

Show 4: May 29
1) Johnny Saint made short work of Nacho Barrera with a one-minute submission due to an armlock around the knee. The Treasure Island fans were impressed by the British technician’s flexibility and quickness. In an interview with Mick Karch, Saint said he is excited to showcase his skills in the Great Lakes states!
2) Joe Blanchard was victorious over The Iron Duke in two minutes with a submission via the abdominal stretch. Joe was accompanied by son Tully, who was very braggadocios in cheering on his father. Joe wrestled a largely scientific style but the Blanchards gloated in an interview after that they would prove to be the two best wrestlers in all of Great Lakes Championship Wrestling!
Video aired of Mad Dog Vachon’s victory over Dan “The Beast” Severn on January 26, 2020 at the Richfield American Legion (Post #435) in the “B” block of the Great Lakes title tournament. Severn tried for submissions three times with various armbars. Vachon got to the ropes twice and bit Severn’s hand the third time! Rough tactics like that turned the tide in Vachon’s favor and got him the pinfall after a Mad Dog Pounce in 16 minutes.
3) Mad Dog Vachon picked up a win over Jake “The Milkman” Milliman (1) in four minutes. Milliman had some offense but missed on a dropkick. Vachon hit a backbreaker for the winning fall and again claimed he would be the Great Lakes Heavyweight champion tomorrow night in St. Paul!
4) The Long Riders (“Wild” Bill & Scott “Hog” Irwin [1]) gained a measure of revenge from last week’s episode by getting a countout win over Jim Brunzell (3) & Jerry Lynn (2) in 14 minutes of a 20-minute match. The fan favorites from Minnesota had the early advantage but Scott took over on young Lynn late in the bout. He tossed him to the floor and then body slammed him outside the ring. Lynn’s back was hurting and Scott took advantage, hitting the superplex. Lynn somehow managed to kick out. Bill was the legal man and took the fight to the floor again. While Scott and Brunzell brawled in the ring and got Brent Fillmore’s attention, Bill choked Lynn with the bullwhip and then drove him back-first into the ring post. Bill returned to the ring and got Fillmore’s attention to Lynn on the outside. Brunzell tried to help his partner but couldn’t get him back in the ring by the count of 10. As the Long Riders celebrated, the Great Lakes Tag Team champions the Rock ‘n Roll Express showed up to check on Lynn. Fans have to wonder what shape Lynn will be in for tomorrow night’s bout!
