Zeke ( Vegas), I too use Podcast Addict. It allows you to listen through streaming if you're connected to WiFi. Otherwise, you can download shows and listen without WiFi. Have a great trip! thanks to Cory and everyone else here who has given me advice on how to download podcasts onto my phone! It looks like I have this episode downloaded correctly so I can listen to it on the flight home to Las Vegas later tonight.

Really excellent episode. I am a sucker for in depth stat discussion and philosophy and I thought this was really illuminating.

Nice nod to the old "gwf_hardcore" group Sam...that one made me smile. How else would you compliment the crazy bootleg guys? Even crazier specialty matches Excellent episode. These have been very interesting and fun to listen to, thank you for the putting these together. Between this and the virtual cons its really neat to see/hear from folks you remember from way back still going strong.

One of the more interesting aspects of coming back after a long hiatus and having played so long ago is having a greater appreciation for both the process of crafting the characters and the stats to go along with them. While not easy to come up with either its even more tricky to get a good combination of compelling character with good (but maybe not god-like) stats. Was far too easy to get carried away creating a character without thinking of overall roster composition and just overall balance. These were not things being considered back in the day.
I found the discussion about complexity an interesting point. The core mechanics of the game are fairly simple and are largely driven by luck + stats. There is a balance when it comes to adding things to the mix. The more complex you get the longer the matches, but for some folks (like myself) the extra details can be neat to track and play out. A counter point would be that the less complex, the more you can play and expand stories, etc. If you more interested in booking and angles the lighter play style is a benefit. If you enjoy the actual match play it can be fun to add things to the mix until you get the level of detail or "realism" you want. One strength of the core mechanics is that it is a good abstraction of an actual match. You have the beginning/middle/end of the match baked into the cards. The dice then drive the overall flow of the match.

Although most of my time and effort is spent on Legends, I believe that any time Rob is talking FTR and card stats / choice decisions I am completely invested and hooked. The podcast had such a good breakdown on thinking about the mechanics and stats not only to get each character to fit now and be unique in the storyline but also for potential new releases down the line and fitting in with the rest of the COTG universe. Really love Rob's detailed thinking on each of the cards. Just great. At the same time, I thought Sam did an excellent job with following up to get some great nuggets from the process, and I thought his details about his first foray into an "official" card of Edith Surreal fit in very well with the subject. Kudos on another really enjoyable listen.

FTRs roster size allows you to run a handful of matches so it doesn't get overwhelming.
