Everton Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the Club’s former manager, Gordon Lee, at the age of 87. Gordon was in charge at Goodison Park from 1977 to 1981, succeeding Billy Bingham and preceding Howard Kendall. He led Everton out at Wembley ahead of the 1977 League Cup final and also steered the Blues to two FA Cup semi-finals and two top-four finishes in the First Division. Gordon Lee was born in the Staffordshire town of Cannock on 13 July 1934 and began his playing career at Hednesford Town before joining Aston Villa in 1955. He was with Villa when they reached the 1957 FA Cup final, but he didn’t feature in their 2-1 loss to Manchester United at Wembley. He did, however, appear in both legs of the 1961 League Cup final when Villa defeated Rotherham United to claim the inaugural trophy and was again involved in the 1963 final, which was lost to Birmingham City. In 1966, Gordon left Villa Park to see out his playing days at Shrewsbury Town.

Johnny Grier, a former NFL official, passed away on March 8th, 2022, at the age of 74. Grier was a football official for 23 years in the National Football League from 1981 to 2004. He began in the NFL as a field judge before becoming the first African American referee in the history of the NFL with the start of the 1988 NFL season. Grier officiated in one Super Bowl, Super Bowl XXII in 1988, which was his last game as a field judge and the same game in which Doug Williams became the first African American quarterback to win the Super Bowl. On the field, he wore uniform number 23, which is now worn by Jerome Boger, another African American referee. Grier was a graduate from the University of the District of Columbia. Grier began officiating football at age 18 and started as a high school football official in 1965, and he later moved on to college football in 1972, and eventually the NFL in 1981. In 1989, a year after becoming a referee, he oversaw the head coaching debut of Art Shell, the first black NFL head coach in the NFL's modern era. Grier served as an officiating supervisor for the NFL and previously as Supervisor of Football Officials for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. His career ended abruptly during the 2004 NFL season when he was forced to retire due to a leg injury suffered during a series of games. He was replaced by a back judge on his crew, Scott Green, who had previous experience as a referee in NFL Europe. He later served as an officiating supervisor for the NFL and previously as Supervisor of Football Officials for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Gordon Kannegiesser, a former pro hockey defenseman, passed away on March 1st, 2022, at the age of 76. Kannegiesser played 23 games in the National Hockey League for the St. Louis Blues and 127 games for the World Hockey Association with the Houston Aeros and Indianapolis Racers. Gordon is the brother of Sheldon Kannegiesser. The following is text from Mr. Kannegiesser's online obituary: "Gord is survived by his brother Sheldon, sister Judy and nephews Brett and Jameson. Gord may be remembered for his lengthy career as a professional hockey player with the St. Louis Blues, Seattle Totems, Denver Spurs and Houston Aeros, winning championships in three professional leagues, the World Hockey Association, the Central Professional League and the Western Hockey League. For the past several years Gordon has been part of a concussion research program at Toronto Western Hospital for professional athletes. First discovered at Boston University Medical Center, statistics indicate that professional football and hockey players receiving multiple concussions, are 8 times more likely to develop ALS than the general public. Gord’s passion was preaching and sharing his faith in Jesus Christ with others. He was very active in ministries at Bethel Gospel Chapel and the North Bay City jail. If one word could describe Gordon, it would be “faithfulness,” in every action, word, deed and relationship
