Starting with my first supercard for my new fed...
ASAW Mega-Clash
From the Greensboro Colosseum
Match 1: The Long Riders Vs. Tugboat and Chaz Taylor
How we got here: These two teams first crossed paths in the gauntlet match held in week 2 to crown the first tag team champions, with the father and son duo eliminating the brother tag team by DQ. The steel chair shot that lead to the disqualification left the Taylor’s easy prey to the Amazing French Canadians in the next phase of the gauntlet. Feeling like they didn’t get a fair shake, the Taylors challenged the Irwins to a match at Mega-Clash.
Results: The Long Riders got a hard-fought victory over the Taylors after Hog Irwin used his loaded boot to put away Tugboat.
Match 2: Big Van Vader (with Jim Cornette) Vs. Tiger Conway Jr.
How we got here: Jim Cornette, full of bluster, announced his mastodon was coming to ASAW. The always game Tiger Conway Jr. accepted the big man’s open challenge.
Results: Tiger Conway Jr. got the disqualification victory when Big Van Vader attacked him with a steel chair after the action spilled outside. Vader didn’t seem to care as he proceeded to powerbomb the young Tiger on the concrete floor.
Match 3: ASAW Tag Team Championship Match
Champions Matt Cardona and Bryan Myers Vs Challengers The Amazing French Canadians
How we got here: In the week two gauntlet match to crown the inaugural tag team champions, the final two teams were Cardona and Myers and Jacques Rougeau and Pierre Carl Ouellet. Cardona and Myers picked up the win after hitting Ouellet with the Long Island Expressway. Rougeau was quick to point out that he and his partner had already faced and beaten the Taylors and Too Cool, and would have won if they had been fresh. Cardona and Myers accepted the Amazing French Canadians challenge to a title match at Mega-Clash.
Results: And still! In a very fast paced and evenly fought match up, Myers and Cardona retained their tag team titles. Though both Myers and Cardona were spent, Cardona was able to hit the “Radio Silence” leg lariat on Rougeau for the win.
Match 4: British Bulldog Vs. Adrian Street
How we got here: Coming out of the tournament for the Television Championship, British Bulldog (who made it all the way to the semi-finals) found himself being harassed by this fellow country man Street. Bulldog challenged the Exotic one to a match at Mega-Clash.
Results: Adrian Street defeated the Bulldog using his crucifix pinning combination. Bulldog dominated Street early, with his massive power advantage making the difference. Street may have pulled a bit of a rope-a-dope here, as he was able to weather the storm of Bulldog’s early offense and turn the tables to get the victory.
Match 5: Too Cool Vs. Buddy Rose and Doug Sommers
How we got here: Both teams had disappointing showings in weeks 2 tag title gauntlet match. Rose and Sommers blamed their poor showing on drawing number one and stated that if they had gotten the penultimate spot like Too Cool, they would have won. Too Cool took umbrage with this, and the match at Mega-Clash was made.
Results: In a surprisingly one sided match up, Rose and Sommers dominated Too Cool. Rose pinned Scott Taylor after hitting the bombs away. After getting the win, Rose and Sommers pantomimed the titles around their wastes.
Match 6: Television Title Tournament Finals
Tommy Rich Vs. Jack Brisco
How we got here: After both men failed to win the American Championship in week 1’s battle royal, they were considered early favorites in the Television Championship tournament that began in week 3. Rich beat Hugh Morris, Ivan Kollof, and The British Bulldog to make the finals. Brisco made the finals with wins over Adrian Street, Abdullah the Butcher, and Dan Severn.
Results: And new! Tommy Rich over came an incredibly game opponent in Brisco to win the match and become the first ASAW Television champion after using the Thesz Press to secure a pinfall victory. After the match, the two competitors shook hands.
Match 7: Red October Vs. The Trooper, Ranger Ross, and The American Males
How we got here: Koloff and his Russian compatriots started their ASAW run by attacking The Trooper in the American championship battle royal week 1. Then the Bolsheviks assaulted the American Males after being eliminated by the handsome duo during week 2’s tag team gauntlet. Finally, They continued their brutal assault by attacking Ranger Ross after Kollof beat him in the first round of the Television title tournament.
Results: Score one for America as The Trooper used The Big Pinch to get the victory over Ivan Koloff in a fun, fast paced eight man tag.
Match 8: American Championship Match
Best 2 out of 3 falls
Champion Bob Backlund Vs. Challenger Kurt Angle (With Mr. Fuji and Abdullah the Butcher)
How we got here: On the first card of ASAW’s existence, Bob Backlund won a battle royal to become the inaugural American champion, last eliminating Nikolai Volkoff. Week 2, Mr. Fuji introduced ASAW fans to Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle, who had been scheduled to appear in the battle royal, but missed the event due to travel issues. Angle immediately set his sights on Backlund. What started out as a purely scientific grappling rivalry took an unexpected and violent turn when Fuji’s Sudanese mad man Abdulah the Butcher helped Angle defeat Backlund in a non-title match in week 5. Angle and Abdullah bloodied Backlund in a post-match assault. In week 7, Backlund returned and the match was made official for Mega-Clash.
Results: Bob Backlund won the first fall after connecting with his rolling back bridge! Angle was able to even the score by forcing Backlund to submit to the ankle lock. In the third fall, Backlund tried to put Angle away with his dreaded crossface chicken wing, but Angle just managed to reach the ropes. Backlund tried to use the rolling back bridge again, but was too close to the ropes and Abdullah the Butcher was able to strike Backlund in the throat while the referee wasn’t looking. Angle then hit Backlund with the Angle slam and scored the decisive pinfall… And new!
