All Stars of American Wrestling
Week 16
From Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas Nevada
Match 1: Jumping Jim Brunzell Vs. Frogman LeBlanc
Brunzell continued to look strong heading into the four corners match at Americana. He dominated the journeyman, LeBlanc; wearing him down with a sleeper hold before putting him away with a picture perfect high flying dropkick.
In the ASAW Studios, Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby "The Brain" Heenan ran down tonight's card including the big ten man tag team main event. Monsoon also hyped up next week's main event Television title match between "Wildfire" Tommy Rich, the defending champion, and Davey Boy Smith of Camp Cornette. The Brain speculated that, after suffering two powerbombs at Vader's hands last week, Rich may be in no shape to defend his title.
Match 2: Scott Taylor (with Brian Christopher) Vs. Scott "Hog" Irwin (with Bill Irwin)
The budding rivalry between the Longriders and Too Cool continues to heat up in a match pitting each team’s Scott against each other. Hog Irwin started out hot, but Scotty 2 Hotty countered an ill advised move off the top rope to take over. After punishing Irwin with super kicks and a back suplex, Taylor connected with his patented Worm maneuver. When the Worm failed to put Irwin away, Taylor went for the move again, only for Irwin to hope up and kick Scotty with his steel toed boot! After that, it wasn’t long before Hog hit Taylor with the best Superplex in the business and got the three count.
After the match, Lance Russell hosted a special Americana Update, running down the card for the upcoming super show now just four weeks away. Three big matches had already been announced: the four corners elemination match for a future American championship oppertunity between Jim Brunzell, Austin Idol, Thunderbolt Patterson, and Jack Brisco, the Russian Chain match between Ivan Koloff and "The Beast" Dan Severn, and the main event American title match between "Your" American campion Kurt Angle and an opponent to be announced later tonight by match maker Teddy Long. To this action, Russell announced the addition of a ten team tag team battle royal! Former tag team champions, The Major Players, were announced to be taking a leave from ASAW to focus on the upcoming release of thier much anticipated line of bendy action figures. Since the former champions won't be envoking thier rematch anytime soon, the winners of this ten team tag team battle royal will earn the first shot at new champions "Playboy" Buddy Rose and "Pretty Boy" Doug Somers. The ten participating teams will be: The Bolshivks, The Fabulous Ones, The Amazing French Canadians, Tugboat & Chaz Taylor, The Long Riders, Too Cool, The American Males, The Moondogs, Big Bully Busick & Hugh Morrus, and Jake Milliman & Kenny Jay.
Match 3: Tugboat & Chaz Taylor Vs. Big Bully Busick & Hugh Morrus
The announcement of the tag team battle Royal raised the stakes for this one. For a good chunk of the match, young Chaz Taylor took the lion’s share of the punishment being doled out by the newly formed duo of Busick and Morrus. Chaz survived No Laughing Matter from Morrus and a series of grinding bear hugs from Busick. Chaz caught Busick trying to come off the top rope (the I’ll advised move of the night for those in the rule breaker locker room), and used the Chaztizer to get a near fall on Busick. Chaz finally made a desperately need tag to his father, and Tugboat ran wild. Tugboat, a man who tips the scales at well over 300 pounds, rocked Busick with four flying clothesline’s in a row! The bully rolled out of the ring after the fourth one, and when Tugboat came out after him, Busick back suplexed Tugboat through the timekeeper’s table! The referee had no choice but to disqualify the team of Busick and Morrus and award the match to the Taylors.
After the match, back in the ASAW studios, Lance Russell hosted a sit down interview with former American Champion Bob Backlund. Backlund was all buiness as he addressed his loss to Abdullah the Butcher in the brutal Sudanese death match, acknowledging that the Butcher had bested him. Backlund however pointed out that the stipulation had been of Abdullah and Mr. Fuji's chosing. Backlund challenged the big man from the Sudan to a rematch at Americana in a stipulation of his choice: a cage match! Backlund then up'd the stakes even more, saying ASAW wasn't big enough for the both of them, Backlund proposed an additional stipulation: loser leaves town!
Match 4: Dutch Savage Vs. Redd Dogg
Dutch Savage made his singles debut against the double tough Redd Dogg. Redd Dogg took control at the outset, and dominated early on he got a near fall with a running powerslam, and then connected with his finishing move: The Blackout. Savage managed to kick out from that and soon got a surprise roll up when Redd Dogg missed a charge in the corner. With that momentum shift, Savage took over and never looked back. After scoring two high flying death jumps, Dutch hit Redd Dogg with the devastating running pile driver to secure a pinfall victory!
After the match, Gordon Solie caught a word with Dutch. Savage challenged Davey Boy Smith to a match at Americana, regardless of the outcome of Smith's match next week against Savage's friend "Wildfire" Tommy Rich! Jim Cornette, accompanied by his Mastadon Vader, came out to accept that challenge on Davey Boy Smith's behalf. Cornette then added that Vader would face Rich at the super card, and if Rich "through devine intervention" held on to the title against Smith, then the match with Vader would be for the title!
Match 5: Tiger Conway Jr. Vs. Abdullah the Butcher (with Mr. Fuji)
Tiger never stood a chance against the mad man from the Sudan, who came in hot and ready for a fight. He struck Conway with some sort of foreign object (possibly a fork) and then quickly followed it up with the Sudanese Meat Cleaver to secure the victory.
After the bell had rung, American champion Kurt Angle made a surprise apperance in Las Vegas, joining his manager and Abullah the Butcher in the ring to be interviewed by Gordon Solie. Right out of the gate, Fuji accepted Bob Backlund's challenge for Abdullah, then Kurt Angle grabbed the microphone and said that, while it was great "Abby" would "get rid of that howdy doody looking loser once and for all" Angle demanded matchmaker Teddy Long come out and tell him who he'd be defending his championship against at the super card. Teddy Long obligingly came out. Despite demanding an answer from the matchmaker, Angle didn't seem too interested in letting Long speak. He instead ran down several potential challengers to his title. He pointed out that Brisco, Patterson, and Brunzell were all in the four corners match, that Rich and Savage were busy with Camp Cornette, that Backlund was going to lose the cage match to Abdullah, that Severn was in the chain match, and that Cardona and Myers "were off playing with dolls". He finished by saing that, since he had already beaten the Trooper "clean as his mother's kitchen floor" and refused a to have a rematch, the only person left to challenge him must be: Frogman LeBlanc! Angle called for Frogman to join them in the ring to shake hands and make it official. That's when Teddy Long grabbed the microphone away from Angle and stated that Angle was correct that most of the top contenders were otherwise occupided at Americana. So, Teddy had to bring in a very special challenger for the American championship, in light of Angle's refusal to defend the title against the Trooper. Suddenly, Angle's own music began to play, much to the champion's confussion. Teddy long pointed to the entrance way and introduced the man who would challenge Angle for the title at Americana: the masked man known as The Patriot! An irate Angle and Fuji sent Abdullah the Butcher to attack the Patriot at the entry way, but The Patriot intercepted the big man with a jaw jacking clothesline, then slammed Abdullah in an impressive display of power.
Match 6: Ranger Ross Vs Austin Idol
There had been talk about Austin Idol needing a win here to keep his momentum going heading into the four corners match at Americana. Tonight, he grabbed a strangle hold on that momentum, with a dominating performance and easy victory against the always game Ranger Ross. After battering Ross with jumping knee smashes, Idol locked Ross in the Las Vegas Leglock and got the submission victory for a statement win.
Before the next match, back in the ASAW studio, Gorilla Monsoon recapped the night's action and tried to hype the ten man tag team main event. He was distracted though by Heenan, who sat with a paper bag on his head. When Gorilla told Heenan to stop it, The Brain responded by saying "Brain who? I'm Doctor X!" Brain than took the bag off and said anyone who couldn't tell that The Patriot was The Trooper couldn't find thier way out of a paper bag and that Long had pulled a fast one. Monsoon shrugged and said "you can't prove it though".
Main Event
Ten Man Tag Team Match
The American Males, The Fabulous Ones, and "The Beast" Dan Severn Vs. Red October (Alexis Smirnoff & The Bolshiviks) & The Moondogs
There were a lot of combustible elements here, with four of the ten tag teams that will be in the big battle royal at Americana as well as Dan Severn and his rival Ivan Koloff’s enforcer. The action here was as fast paced as we expected, with the highlight being the American Males getting their hands on the Moondogs for the first time! Bagwell and Riggs double teamed Moondog Rex, who got out of the ring in a hurry, showing that the wildmen who got their contracts by attacking the American Males from behind, don’t want any part of the Males in a fair fight.
The end of the match came soon after, and surprised everyone. Rex tagged in Boris Zhukov, who very soon after hit Scotty Riggs with the Soviet Stomp and got a quick three count victory for his team.
