BOB BACKLUND vs. GREG 'THE HAMMER' VALENTINE (1)

WWF title held up

Backlund decked 'Captain' Lou Albano before the bell, knocking the rotund manager through the ropes and to the floor. A fired up Howdy Doody also attacked The Hammer before the bell, relentlessly punching and kicking him as the ref called for the bell to ring and start the match. A crazed Backlund pummeled Valentine unmercifully as a sold-out MSG went crazy! Bob sent Valentine to the mat with a vicious wind-up forearm and scored at two count, as a stunned Valentine barely rolled a shoulder up. Backlund was up quick, bouncing from foot-to-foot waiting on The Hammer to get to his feet. A disoriented Valentine got to his feet as Backlund positioned himself behind him and locked in the CROSSFACE CHICKENWING! The Hammer submitted almost immediately (snake eyes), but Backlund refused to release the hold. Arnold Skaaland, nor the ref could get Bob to release the hold as Albano motioned to the back. The INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPION Don Muraco hit the ring and dropped Howdy Doody with a HAWAIIAN HAMMER, as Valentine slumped to the mat. The Magnificent One then drove his taped thumb into Backlund's throat (Asiatic Spike) and Bob rolled around the ring holding his throat as fans pelted the ring with debris!

MOONDOGS: REX & SPOT 2 (C) vs. TONY GAREA 2 & LARRY ZBYSZKO 3

1st fall - REX pinned Larry Zbyszko after a MOONDOG DROP!
2nd fall - TONY GAREA pinned SPOT after a FACELOCK-SUNSET FLIP!!
3rd fall - REX was disqualified for SMASHING Garea in the face WITH a BONE!!!

WINNERS - TONY GAREA & LARRY ZBYSZKO

* The Moondogs lost, but escape with the title belts as the titles can't change hands on a disqualification.





INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP title match

'MAGNIFICENT' MURACO (C) vs. S.D. JONES 2

SD held his own early, but the champion was just too tough and would not be denied. After a couple near falls, Muraco downed Jones for the count after a savage HAWAIIAN HAMMER.

BOB BACKLUND 3 (C) vs. 'The Magnificent' DON MURACO 3

The Intercontinental Champion started strong, working on Backlund's back with repeated over-the-shoulder backbreakers. The HAWAIIAN HAMMER put Backund down for an early two count, but a foot on the ropes broke the count. Howdy Doody went to the outside several times, trying to break the Magnificent One's momentum. The usually strict DICK WOEHRLE let 'the good guy' Backlund get away with slamming Muraco's head into the announce table and again later into the ring post - busting Muraco wide-open, this enraged Muraco's manager LOU ALBANO! Backlund almost made Muraco submit with a Boston Crab, but the IC champ was able to grab the bottom rope and force a break. Bob covered Muraco after planting him with a Piledriver - 1.2.. NO! Captain Lou Albano distracted referee Dick Woehrle, enraging Backlund to the point that he went after Albano. Muraco used this opportunity to regroup and hit Backlund with an Asiatic Spike as he climbed back in the ring! 1.2.. NO! Once again Howdy Doody was able to get his foot on the bottom rope forcing a break. Muraco went for a Russian Leg Sweep, but Bob was able to reverse it into a delayed vertical suplex for a near fall!! Backlund was quick to his feet, bouncing from foot-to-foot sizing up Muraco as he struggled to his feet. Backlund locked in the CROSSFACE CHICKENWING and it was all over for the Magnificent One, until Captain Lou Albano rolled in the ring and hit Backlund with a foreign object!!! Referee Dick Woehrle immediately called for the bell, awarding the match to Backlund by virtue of a disqualification!

SGT. SLAUGHTER defeated SD JONES, 'BIG' JOHN STUDD squashed JOHNNY RODZ and TONY GAREA & LARRY ZBYSZKO defeated the MOONDOGS in two straight falls to win the tag titles!

In his usual GRUFF voice "Bob Backlund, you got lucky the first time we met but now I'm back in shape. The best shape I've been in since I ended Bruno Sammartino's long title reign. But I know you're afraid of the Russian Bear, all Americans are nothing but cowards."
