The CWF Heavyweight Title and CWF Tag Team Titles will both be up for grabs in two separate single elimination tournaments taking place at the Capital Centre in Landover, MD. The first round pairings for both tournaments have been set, with the exception of a mystery team that have signed a contract but not yet revealed.
Some very intriguing first round matches in both tournaments. One highlight is Friday night's tag team bracket where "The Boogie Woogie Man" Jimmy Valiant & Ronnie Garvin go up against Diamond Dallas Page's "Diamond Xchange" combination of Razor Ramon & Jake Roberts. The “Hands of Stone” has promised that one punch is all it will take to knock some sense into Roberts. Valiant calls DX a fraud, daddy, and is taking aim at the "Bad Guy".
Another first round tag team match and the one that will main event Friday night will see sparks fly as “Dr. Death” Steve Williams & Danny Hodge square off against Williams former friend and teammate Ted DiBiase and his supposed “upgraded” tag team partner, Mike Rotunda. DiBiase, upon the bracket reveal, was none too pleased his new team is immediately being thrown into a match against the man he turned his back on and who now has a major grudge to settle.
The Heavyweight Title bracket will see the Heenan Family’s "Nature Boy" Ric Flair take on a man he’s faced on numerous occasions and knows very well, the 6’7” Texan, Barry Windham. Any lapse of concentration when facing Windham could spell doom for the former NWA World Champion, and with he and Randy Savage under the same roof Saturday night, who knows what will happen?!
A dream match that could main event any arena in the country is reportedly opening (!) the World Title tournament on Saturday night. It will feature former long-running WWF Champion Bob Backlund going up against Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle. Though never having met before inside the squared circle, these too are very familiar with each other and what each is capable of. Will the mutual respect they have for one another dissipate when so much is on the line? It’s Backlund’s Crossface Chicken Wing vs. Angle’s Ankle Lock in Landover!
In addition to the tournament matches, fans in attendance on Friday night will also be witness to the one and only Gorgeous George. The arrogant, platinum blonde George has signed to appear in Landover and as always, his valet Cherie Dupri will be by his side!
World Women’s Champion The Fabulous Moolah comes to Landover on night 2 to defend her title against the high flying Ida Mae Martinez. Martinez, a former LLFM (Lucha Libre Femenil Mexicana) champion looks to make history this Saturday night. The hated Moolah will have to avoid Ida Mae’s devastating dropkick if she wants to walk out of the Capital Centre with her championship intact.
A new match has just been added for Sunday night. Fans will see the exciting Flyin’ Brian as he goes one on one with Disco Inferno. A win here by either man at an event of this magnitude could propel them straight up the CWF rankings.
Here is a look at the official lineups for all three events.

Geez, talk about some loaded tournament matches! Flair vs. Windham (Go Ric), Angle vs. Backlund… You’ve put together some really compelling matchups and made them even more interesting by giving them context. I can’t wait to see who wins each of the titles! Love it!

Fantastic background information! I love how you have tied everyone together through their past appearances in other (lesser) federations like the WWF. Really looking forward to seeing where this fed goes! Keep up the writing—you have a real gift for it. Thanks homie! I'll Venmo you your payment. What did we agree on again, $10 per compliment? 😉 Wow. I will have to be REALLY complimentary then! What the heck is a Venmo?

CWF NEWSWIRE
The CWF Board of Directors along with the Championship Committee, upon reviewing the incident in Knoxville, TN involving Dan Severn have ruled not to suspend him for his post match attack on Road Dogg Jesse James, which resulted in a broken arm. It was determined that since the altercation occurred on another promotion's watch, they could not in good conscience proceed with any disciplinary action against Severn.
They have however decided to send a stern message to Severn by pulling him from the CWF Heavyweight Title Tournament. Replacing Severn will be none other than Rowdy Roddy Piper. Piper will now face "The All-American" Ron Simmons in a first round match in Landover.
According to Bill Apter, upon receiving the news, Severn and manager Jim Cornette reportedly "lost their sh!t", with Cornette immediately getting on the phone and whining to his mama before reaching out to his lawyer, Stephen P. New.
The Hot Rod, scoffed at the notion of him being a "replacement". Piper said he's a lot of things but he damn sure ain't no replacement. Asked about facing Simmons, Piper said, "Simmons might be big and bad but he ain't ever fought nobody like the Hot Rod!"

Roddy Piper for Dan Severn is a huge upgrade. (Please don't tell him I said that.)
Simmons is in for a long night.

House Show #1 – 01/15/1982 Capital Centre – Landover, MD Welcome to the Capital Wrestling Federation's inaugural event, emanating from Landover, MD, just 12 miles from our nation's capital. Tonight is the first of three huge nights of professional wrestling action and we kick off the weekend's festivities with CWF Tag Team Title tournament action. Gorgeous George is also on tap. Let's go to the ring!
Ring announcer Gary Michael Cappetta welcomed the fans to the debut of Capital Wrestling Federation. He then introduced Keith Steinborn first, followed by Gorgeous George, who with his hair in golden curls, and wearing a magnificent robe adorned with ruffles and roses made his entrance. "Pomp and Circumstance" played as George & Cherie Dupri took their sweet time walking to the ring. Before George stepped through the ropes, Cherie disinfected the ring by spraying it with perfume...
1. Gorgeous George (w/Cherie Dupri) b Keith Steinborn George stifled a brief Steinborn comeback by raking his face with his Georgie pins before winning with an airplane spin in 3:38 to win the first match in CWF history.
Cappetta stood center ring but before introducing the next match, he ran down the rules of the CWF Tag Team Title tournament: 16 teams in a single elimination format. First and quarterfinal round matches will have a 30 minute time limit, semifinals will have a 45 minute time limit, and the finals will have no time limit.
2. Diamond Dallas Page & Razor Ramon b Jimmy Valiant & Ronnie Garvin to advance to the CWF Tag Team Title tournament quarterfinals Well, no sign of Jake Roberts who was scheduled to team with Ramon. A lot of brawling in this one that saw Page & Valiant take the brunt of punishment for their respective teams. Valiant mounted the turnbuckle and ten-punched Page but didn't see a blind tag to Ramon who came up from behind Valiant and dropped him with a devastating belly-to-back superplex in 14:27...
...Page and Ramon gloated at ringside as Garvin checked on the Boogie Woogie Man in the ring. Page, smiling from ear to ear, told Garvin to send his boy Barry (Windham) a message - stay out of the Diamond Xchange's business.
A propaganda video for the Playa'z Circle was shown on the Cap Centre's video screen high above the ring and was narrated by a familiar voice. It ended with several raised fists followed by a "holla"! The fans in attendance heavily booed...
3. Mark Henry & D;Lo Brown (w/Jazz) b Angelo Poffo & Lanny Poffo to advance to the CWF Tag Team Title tournament quarterfinals Henry executed a backbreaker on Lanny followed by D'Lo's LO DOWN but Angelo dove across the ring with a big save. Angelo finally was able to tag in and was a house of fire until Henry dropped him with a head butt and then climbed to the second rope for a splash that saw Angelo somehow manage to kick out. An angry Henry immediately picked up Angelo and crushed him with the WORLD'S STRONGEST SLAM to pick up the win in 6:59.
Gordon Solie introduced Ric Flair sans Bobby Heenan who presumably was getting Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard ready for their big match later tonight against Rob Van Dam & 2 Cold Scorpio. Flair talked about his first round match that will main event tomorrow night against Barry Windham. He put Barry over as being one of the most gifted wrestlers to step foot in the ring, but one thing he's not, and that's the Nature Boy! He ended by making some disparaging remarks about Randy Savage and the Poffos.
4. The British Bulldogs b Jake Milliman & Kenny Jay to advance to the CWF Tag Team Title tournament quarterfinals Milliman and Jay tried to get a jump on Davey Boy and Dynamite as referee Morgan Dollar was patting them down pre-match, but the Bulldogs shook it off and made short work of their first round opponent's. Davey Boy put Jay away after a falling power slam in 1:58. 5. Rob Van Dam & 2 Cold Scorpio b Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard (w/Bobby Heenan) to advance to the CWF Tag Team Title tournament quarterfinals Solid, lengthy match that saw Anderson & Blanchard utilizing double teams to wear their opponent's down. Late in the match, Van Dam caught Anderson with a springboard back kick and immediately followed up with the FIVE-STAR FROG SPLASH. The impact however knocked Anderson too close to the apron where he was able to drape his foot across the bottom rope to break referee Dick Woehrle's count. Scorpio tagged in and went for the kill but Heenan jumped on the apron only to get shoved off by Woehrle who had had enough of his antics, knocking the Brain to the floor! Scorpio followed up with a corkscrew somersault leg drop he calls the Tumbleweed. Van Dam prevented Blanchard from making the save and Scorpio got the pin at 19:14. The Heenan Family didn't start out the way Heenan had imagined and he was beside himself afterwards... ...The Playa'z Circle (Mark Henry, D'Lo Brown & Jazz) came to the ring seemingly impressed with Scorpio, and not so much Van Dam. It appeared they were attempting to persuade Scorpio to join their team but after seemingly contemplating for a minute, Scorpio said "nah brotha, I'm good", then wound up getting pummeled for it. Henry shouted "welcome to the Hall of Pain!!" RVD retrieved a chair and ended up clearing the ring.
Intermission - Cappetta reminded the fans that there are still a few tickets available for Saturday and Sunday night at the box office.
6. The Road Warriors (w/Paul Ellering) b Iron Mike Sharpe & Charlie Fulton to advance to the CWF Tag Team Title tournament quarterfinals The fans popped big time while the wily veterans stood in shock as "Iron Man" blasted throughout the arena, signifying the arrival of the mystery team, the Road Warriors! Sharpe and Fulton used every trick in their book to try and gain the upper hand on the powerful Hawk & Animal and hung in there for over 5 minutes until Fulton fell victim to the devastating DOOMSDAY DEVICE that saw Animal score the 1-2-3 in 6:10...
...Gordon Solie entered the ring to get a few words from Ellering and his imposing men. They said they didn't come to the CWF to make friends, they came here to kick people's teeth down their stinking throats! Whaaaaaaaat a ruuuuuuuuuush!
7. Billy Gunn & Ken Shamrock dq Gorilla Monsoon & Killer Khan (w/Captain Lou Albano) to advance to the CWF Tag Team Title tournament quarterfinals The eccentric Albano led his two monsters to the ring and they sure lived up to their stables name "LOUnacy." Shamrock managed to get the massive Monsoon down on the mat and applied his ANKLE LOCK, even appearing to make the big man tap but Albano distracted referee Joey Marella. After some questionable (to put it lightyl) tactics, the Mongolian landed a SECOND ROPE KNEE DROP on Gunn but an alert Shamrock managed to make the save. Monsoon and Khan beat Gunn down, and attempted a double clothesline, but Gunn ducked under and came back with a double clothesline of his own! Gunn who was busted open, went to tag Shamrock, but the "World's Most Dangerous Man" was pulled off of the ring apron by Khan and smashed into the steel post. Monsoon beat down Gunn inside the ring as Khan utilized his Oriental Spike on Shamrock on the arena floor. Suddenly, the fans all stood in unison as "The Eight Wonder of the World" Andre the Giant appeared and slowly made his way down the aisle. Realizing he was losing control of the match, referee Joey Marella signaled for the bell at 14:40 and awarded the match to Gunn & Shamrock...
...The bell repeatedly sounded and as Andre reached ringside, a panicked Albano alerted his men who quickly backed off of their opponents. Andre stepped over the top rope and into the ring to make sure nothing else shady went down. The towering Giant raised the hands of both Shamrock & Gunn while keeping an eye on Monsoon & Khan on the floor.
The Midnight Express along with Jim Cornette came to the ring for the next match. Cornette took the house mic from Cappetta but as he began to introduce his team, he was interrupted by The Road Dogg Jesse James, who appeared on the arena's video screen! Road Dogg, who hasn't been seen since Dan Severn and the Express put him on the shelf had a message. He was close to 100% and when he comes back there's going to be hell to pay. Oh you didn't know?!...
8. The Midnight Express (w/Jim Cornette) b The Mulkey Brothers to advance to the CWF Tag Team Title tournament quarterfinals It looked as though the Express may have taken the Mulkeys a bit too lightly in the early goings (either that or they were on edge after the Road Dogg's appearance). Bobby Eaton hit Divorce Court on Randy but Bill was able to make the save. Eaton then whipped Randy into the ropes and lowered his head for a back body drop but Randy countered with a big knee lift that popped the crowd (and had Cornette momentarily sweating at ringside)! The Mulkeys then attempted a double elbow smash but Condrey just plowed through them both. A tag to Eaton and a MIDNIGHT MASSACRE later and Bill was easily pinned at 3:47.
Gordon Solie brought out Ida Mae Martinez, who will be challenging The Fabulous Moolah for her World Women's Title tomorrow night. Martinez told Solie even though Moolah is tough, she knows what it takes to be champion. Boos began to rain down as Moolah came out wearing her title belt, and interrupted Martinez. In her Southern twang, the reigning champion told Solie there was nobody woman enough to beat her, before turning to Martinez, "...and honey, you don't stand a chance." With the main event up next, Ted DiBiase & Mike Rotunda were introduced first by Cappetta to a round of boos. Once in the ring, DiBiase cut a brief promo where he trashed Steve Williams, telling the fans he couldn't cut it at the University of Oklahoma, couldn't cut it in Japan, and couldn't cut it in America. DiBiase told the fans that with Rotunda, they were looking at the first ever CWF Tag Team Champions... the fans cheered as "Boomer Sooner", the Oklahoma fight song began playing and Williams and Danny Hodge were introduced and out next...
9. Steve Williams & Danny Hodge b Ted DiBiase & Mike Rotunda to advance to the CWF Tag Team Title tournament quarterfinals This grudge match was intense from start to finish and turned out to be the bout of the night. Williams brute strength was on display early when he lifted the former Syracuse Orangemen high in the air and walked around the ring wowing the crowd, before dropping him with a press slam for a two-count. After the tide was turned due to some sneaky double teaming, DiBiase showed off some strength of his own when he put his former partner Williams down with a FULL POWER SLAM and a near fall. With Rotunda back in the ring and Williams making the tag to Hodge, the two amateur greats spent several minutes putting on a mat wrestling clinic. The former World Jr. Heavyweight Champion Hodge got the better of the exchange, so Rotunda took the low road and grabbed him in a headlock before jabbing a thumb into his eye. Temporarily blinded but fired up, Hodge responded by unleashing a series of boxing jabs that appeared to open a cut over Rotunda's right eye. Now bloodied, Rotunda found himself trapped in Hodge's Boston Crab as the fans cheered and DiBiase desperately tried to reach in for the tag. Referee Dick Woehrle checked the resilient Rotunda who refused to give up. Hodge tagged out before running across the ring and delivering a dropkick that sent DiBiase to the floor. "Dr. Death" then delivered an OKLAHOMA STAMPEDE that kept Rotunda down at 22:43...
...As Williams & Hodge's hands were raised in victory, the fans cheers quickly turned to jeers as DiBiase slipped back into the ring and attacked them both from behind. Rotunda recovered and the two sore losers laid the boots to their enemies. Williams & Hodge fought back however with Williams clotheslining DiBiase over the top rope and to the floor. Hodge meanwhile locked Rotunda in an Indian Deathlock until DiBiase managed to pull his partner out of the ring to safety. Williams & Hodge celebrated in the ring to close the show and send the fans home happy.
Well, there you have it. The CWF's first card is in the books and what a show it was. Eight teams have moved on while eight others get to watch and see how the tournament unfolds. We stay in Landover where tomorrow night the Heavyweight Title tournament begins, while the Tag Team Title tournament continues with the quarterfinals.

Nice stuff. I wasn't expecting Angelo and Lanny Poffo to win, but definitely would have preferred them over Henry and Brown...
