Episode 1: The Championship
90’s championship wrestling debuted with a one-night tournament to crown the inaugural 9CW champion! 9CW commissioner Teddy Long, on hand to present the championship belt to the tournament’s ultimate winner, introduced the first two participants “The Beast” Dan Severn and Big Van Vader. Vader came to the ring flanked by Ted DiBiase and the rest of the Million Dollar Corporation: Virgil, Nikolai Volkoff, and The Quebecers. Long ordered all but DiBiase to the back, as only the Million Dollar Man held a managers license.
Tournament Opening Round Match
Big Van Vader (with Ted DiBiase) defeated Dan Severn via pinfall
Vader used his released power bomb to get the victory, making it look easy against the mixed martial arts legend.
Tournament Opening Round Match
“The Franchise” Shane Douglas defeated “Dr. Death” Steve Williams via pinfall
The second match of the tournament was much more competitive as Douglas barely squeaked past Williams, kicking out of Dr. Death’s powerslam at 2 and 9/10ths before eventually connecting with the Pittsburgh Plunge for the win.
Tournament Opening Round Match
Konnan defeated Mr. Bob Backlund via disqualification
Buzz-cut and wild-eyed Bob Backlund easily could have won this match, but the crazed veteran lost control of his temper and suplexed Konnan through the announcers’ table at ringside, leading to the disqualification.
Tournament Opening Round Match
The British Bulldog defeated Curt Hennig via pinfall
The final opening round match saw the Leeds native use his power to over come Hennig’s technical expertise. In the end, Bulldog used his running power slam to get the win and advance.
Non-Tournament Match
The Million Dollar Corporation (Virgil and the Quebecers with Nikolai Volkoff) defeated The Blue World Order (Stevie Richards, Super Nova, and The Blue Meanie) via disqualification
A break from the tournament action saw the amusing bWo trio take on more of DiBiase’s men. The end saw Big Stevie Cool get his team disqualified after hitting the Stevie Bomb on Quebecer Jacques.
Tournament Semi-Finals
Konnan defeated The British Bulldog via pinfall
In an exciting clash of styles that thrilled the fans, the Mexican luchador used his high-flying offense to best the English powerhouse. Konnan connected with a picture-perfect cross body block off the top rope to advance to the finals.
Tournament Semi-Finals
Big Van Vader (with Ted DiBiase) defeated “The Franchise” Shane Douglas via pinfall
There was nothing pretty or high-flying in this one. Vader used his power to take advantage of Douglas’ exhausted state after his highly competitive first round match against Williams. After quickly connecting with his released power bomb, Vader got the three count and punched his ticket to the finals.
Non-Tournament Match
The Barbarian (with Jimmy Hart) defeated Al Snow via pinfall
In a match that was a bit of a bore, Jimmy Hart’s Barbarian picked up a win over the hard fighting Al Snow after hitting him with a power slam.
Tournament Finals
9CW Championship Match
Konnan defeated Big Van Vader (with Ted DiBiase) via pinfall
In what has to be considered an upset, Konan defeated Vader after hitting the Niagra Driver twice in a row to score the victory and become the new 9CW champion!
After the match, Vader assaulted Konan, joined by the rest of DiBiase’s Million Dollar Corporation, before Commissioner Long could present the championship belt to the winner. Eventually, 9CW officials were able to stop the assault, and DiBiase led his men away. Vader shoved Commissioner Long to the floor and took the championship belt with him as he left.
