LOW Classic #1
New Haven Arena, New Haven, CT
— Gorilla Monsoon & Bobby Heenan open the show by running down the card for the night, particularly the main event. “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers interrupts the two and questions who gave Brian Blair a chance to share the ring with the LOW World Champion? Before Rogers can get an answer, Monsoon and Heenan shift gears and go to the ring where “Playboy” Buddy Rose & “Pretty Boy” Doug Somers are already on the attack.
1. “Playboy” Buddy Rose & “Pretty Boy” Doug Somers beat Jake Milliman & Tiger Conway, Sr. Conway does a fair job at giving Somers and Rose a couple of good shots, but Milliman ends up going down after being overwhelmed by the “Pretty Boy” and “Playboy.” Rose, in the end, whips Milliman into his own tag partner, sending Conway flying off the apron. Millman, still loopy from some rights and lefts by Somers, falls to the mat and feels a double foot stop from Rose.
2. Ilio DiPaolo defeats Frogman LeBlanc via submission. DiPaolo allows LeBlanc to get some offense in, putting on a stellar defensive show in the ring. Eventually, the Italian fan favorite grabs a handful of Frogman’s hair and goes to town with a series of running head rams to the turnbuckle. As he sees LeBlanc is out of his mind, DiPaolo latches on the figure four armbar for the quick victory.
3. In a match that seems to end as soon as it starts, Billy Wicks submits Johnny Rodz with the DOUBLE WRISTLOCK. Rodz, embarrassed, jaws at the referee that he wasn’t ready yet. When asked if he wants to make it a best of three falls match, Rodz backs off and leaves the ring.
4. In more tag team action, Barry Windham and Mike Rotundo of the U.S. Express defeat the Mulkey Brothers when Rotundo pins Randy Mulkey following an elbow drop. After the match, the U.S. Express make it clear that they want a shot at the LOW World Tag Team Champions in the future!
— Backstage, the Moondogs are with “Captain” Lou Albano. The manager tells everyone that nobody is going to take the LOW World Tag Team Championship from the Moondogs. Gorilla Monsoon & Bobby Heenan, at ringside, make note that the Moondogs are scheduled to face the Tony Garea & Larry Zbyszko next month at Madison Square Garden with the titles on the line.
5. Jim Brunzell shocks the crowd and Bob Roop with a quick victory after the flying head scissors and jumping knee smash. Roop proceeds to brutally attack Brunzell after the match; however, Brian Blair runs down to make the save, igniting the fans eagerness for the main event.
6. Davey Boy Smith and Mark Henry hit each other with everything they have. Smith eventually opens the “World’s Strongest Man” up with a series of hard fists to the forehead. Henry continues to fight back, but Smith stops Henry’s second wind after a third RUNNING POWER SLAM! A rematch is already scheduled at the request of Henry.
7. In the main event, “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers beats Brian Blair via disqualification to retain the LOW World Championship when Blair loses his cool and refuses to bring the fight back into the ring. Blair brings way more of a fight than Rogers expects, and Blair even proves that he can withstand the GRAPEVINE FIGURE FOUR for far longer than most. In the end, Blair has enough of the underhanded attacks and delivers a few of his own.
