David Robert Gatherum Sr., a Canadian NHL ice hockey goaltender, passed at the age of 92 in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. His remarkable career left an indelible mark on the ice, even though it was brief. On October 11, 1953, Gatherum replaced the injured Terry Sawchuk in his National Hockey League debut for the Detroit Red Wings. He recorded a shutout in Detroit’s 4-0 win over Toronto. Gatherum set an NHL record for the longest shutout sequence by a goaltender at the start of his career—100.21 minutes from October 11 to 16, 1953. The record stood until 2011. Although he played only three NHL games, Gatherum’s name graced the Stanley Cup with Detroit in 1954 during the playoffs.
