. . . . Does Scott Sigler's new book concept (including the bloodthirsty football team, The KRAKENS) sound eerily similar to COTG? I'm not trying to give anyone free press here, but ever since one of my students introduced me to this, I've been debating whether or not Sigler, a mega-popular net writer and published author, had some (ahem) help with creating the world of his new book. Check it out: www.scottsigler.com/therookieWhat do you think?

Sounds like the football version of CotG to me!

Scott is actually a semi-good friend. We're pioneer podcasters and all. I'll point him this way. He'll enjoy the controversy.

I don't get a COTG connection here at all. Mutant League Football perhaps....but even there not really.

I see the connection.
STORY SYNOPSIS: Set in a lethal pro football league 700 years in the future, THE ROOKIE is a story that combines the intense gridiron action of "Any Given Sunday" with the space opera style of "Star Wars" and the criminal underworld of "The Godfather."
Aliens and humans alike play positions based on physiology, creating receivers that jump 25 feet into the air, linemen that bench-press 1,200 pounds, and linebackers that literally want to eat you. Organized crime runs every franchise, games are fixed and rival players are assassinated.
Follow the story of Quentin Barnes, a 19-year-old quarterback prodigy that has been raised all his life to hate, and kill, those aliens. Quentin must deal with his racism and learn to lead, or he'll wind up just another stat in the column marked "killed on the field."
Combining anything modern with the space opera style of Star Wars is a cool concept...especially combining pro-wrestling. ;D
Nonetheless, the book looks interesting to me for sure. I liked playing the video game Blitz: The League because of it's "football fiction" style. Mix in some aliens and I'm set.

Osk, I'm glad someone else sees a bit of a connection, anyways.
I don't necessarily think Scott Sigler has out and out rippped off COTG, and I do see more of a Mutant League Football thing here. I also think there are some similarities that at least hint at the world of COTG, although this could be entirely coincidental.
I read Sigler's book, INFECTED, and although I personally didn't care for it (the Stephen King "been there, done that" feel along with a bothersome narration style hurt an otherwise interesting sci-fi story about a unique alien invasion), I'm anxious to read THE ROOKIE. I agree with Osk that all the right ingredients are there for one heckuva story.
and yes, I still think the world he's created for his football thriller could easily be part of the world of the COTG. If there's a guy on any team named Quasar, I'll straight freak.

Y'know, I wonder if a partnership could spring from this? Filsinger Games creates a ROOKIE football league card game featuring the teams and characters from Sigler's book.
Maybe a GWF star pops up in future sequel.
The possibilities are there, and they could lead to a great game series. I'd buy it.

Being that I'm a huge fan of Sigler's, the thought of this as a GWF parellel or rip off never entered my mind. Now the new story with resinck called Title Fight is a lot like POW. I bet if you asked him if he has heard of GWF or COTG he might stare at you, but again you never know. But isn't the Rookie a fun audiobook?
