I'm seriously thinking about going to this year's River Rumble. If I am able to go, would I fly into and out the airport in Des Moines? Brother - I would make the argument that maybe Madison, WI makes sense. Only 90 minutes from Dubuque vs. three hours from Des Moines to Dubuque. I know someone who has to drive through Madison to get to Dubuque.

I found a red eye into Madison but it is very expensive and it is an 11 1/2 hour trip (I flew in to Las Vegas from London 2 years ago in less time than it would take me to get to Madison with this ticket lol) as it involves stops in Portland and then in Chicago before finally getting to Madison at 10:30 AM that Saturday.

Zeke, it would be closer for you to fly in to Cedar Rapids, and I could pick you up on the way to Dubuque. Cedar Rapids is between Dubuque and Des Moines, but it would be on my way to Dubuque, instead of me driving south to Des Moines and back up north to Dubuque. Shoot me a text, and we'll figure it out. I hope you can make it! Chad, I will send you a text but, while I would like to fly into Cedar Rapids, it looks like the earliest I would arrive there is on Saturday is 2:38 PM in the afternoon. There is a flight that arrives that Friday night but there is probably no way I can get to the airport in time from work that day to make it. I should have looked into this more before shooting my mouth off that I was interested in going this year as I did not realize it might not be feasible. The good news is I have found return flights from Cedar Rapids to Las Vegas for just $114 that Sunday, I just need to figure out how to get there.

Tonight I bought my flight into Des Moines for Friday night November 22nd and I was told iowaoaks can pick me up Saturday morning and drive me to the River Rumble. Barry has an extra bed so I will crash with him and then Chad said he could drive me to Cedar Rapids on Sunday for my return flight home. My flights there and back have been purchased so, barring something unexpected, I will see you guys in Iowa in November!

Vegas, you will be treated to a pretty clean 16-ish year old Volvo. Have you ever ridden in a tank, but it's also a car? Ah, Volvo! The best in Swedish engineering!! It is actually a real good car. Oh, and it has heated seats. Volvo, the official car of River Rumble 2024!

I also wanted to comment on games they are playing that aren't Filsinger.
I have had two on my gaming table in the last month. Both are war games. The first is Twighlight Struggle. It is not a solitary game, but have been learning the rules so I can teach it to a friend. It is a great Cold War history/ political influence game. The second is a solitary game called Raiders of the Deep. You become the captain of a German U-boat in World War 1. I have made it to 1917 and was just promoted, bestued with a medal and my crew and I have been given a new sub to go sink ships in unrestricted submarine Warfare in the Atlantic.
Much like our wrestling game, which encourages me to research and learn about the grapplers in it, historical War games majes me interested in learning more about the subjects in the games. We are never to old to continue learning or playing games.

It's Always interesting to hear what other promoters are doing in.
Love hearing about Tim's Strat league, like the expansion with the players from the Negro leagues.

We are never to old to continue learning or playing games. Have you played any of the 'vintage' Avalon Hill war/strategy games from the 70s-80s? I always wondered how good those were. It has been a long time since I played any. Most tabletop gaming took a multi-decade hiatus. Played a lot of Strat-o-matic and then back into Filsinger. Only now, with age and a little more time, have I gotten back into war games. So, my best friend's dad had several and we would play, but the games of today, like those from GMT, are so much better. The look, the diverse subject matters, the ease of play, the online community for questions.. just all-round better. For example, GMT has this series called COIN. It deals with counter insurgency wars. I own two, Fire in the Lake - Vietnam - and Cuba Libre - Cuban Revolution of the late 50's. They have excellent rules for solitary play, and amazing components to create a "you know the rebels are in that region, but you have to root them out Before engaging." Coming in the next month is another in the series called Red Dust Rebellion set on Mars in the future and pits four factions - rebels, church, corporations and Mars government - against each other.
