I had an AWESOME time last night at this PWG show!
Here is some of my personal feedback:
Word to the Wise: If you go to PWG, buy your tickets in advance online like I did- it doesn't cost anything extra except for the $5 per seat for guaranteed front row seats. Once they open the doors, the pre-sale ticket holders get to go in first in a special line and (unless you have front row seats reserved like we did it's all general admission.
So everyone with a presale ticket gets to pick out their seat before they even let in those without a ticket to buy one (but again, it wasn't a problem for us, because we had our front row seats reserved well in advance) and some of those people had to stand even if they got in the doors at all (let alone find seats together with whoever they came with).
We sat in 3 front row center ringside seats. We were already really close to the ring and then Excalibur (he's a masked guy who does PWG's commentary for their DVD buyers and other viewers) came up and told us to advance our seats even closer to the ring so they could fit in an extra row of seats. Without a doubt, that's the closest I have ever sat to the ring and I have in the past sat front row ringside to WWE (then the WWF) house show cards.
First Match: Charles Mercury and the Cutler Brothers defeated Brandon Gatson, Johnny Goodtime, and Jerome "LTP" Robinson
This originally wasn't supposed to be a 6 man tag match. It was supposed to be a singles and then a tag match. But I think because they got the show started late (almost an hour late) that they just combined those two matches into 1 match and said they wanted to do "a PWG traditional 6 man" to explain it.
Mercury had some (but certainly not THE biggest- see what I have to say here later about Chris Hero and the Young Bucks) of the biggest heat of the night. If you sit front row while he's walking around doing his entrance, be prepared to dodge while he tries to flick his sweat at you. But I thought the opening match was great and I automatically knew how cool our seats were when the wrestlers were bouncing off the ropes just a foot or so away from us! At one point, the action spilled outside of the ring and one of the Cutler Brothers started beating up Goodtime right next to Toaster Boy's seat! A great match and I instantly knew how cool this night was going to be.
Second Match: Alex Shelley defeated Scott Lost
Good match. There was a really funny anti-TNA
comment from the crowd, should I mention it here or should I let let it go?
Third Match: Bryan Danielson defeated Chris Sabin
On his way to the ring, while I was standing up, Danielson slapped my hand.
Before the match started, Sabin (with his Detroit gimmick as part of Motor City Machine Guns) told Danielson that his Final Countdown music was the best entrance music because it's also the entrance music for his Detroit Pistons.
Another really good match. Bad news for TNA fans: it looked like Sabin got hurt. After he tapped out to Danielson's CATTLE MUTILATION, Sabin was checked on by Danielson. Sabin had to be helped to the back by security because he couldn't walk by himself on his own feet. I think it's a legit injury.
Fourth Match: Chuck Taylor defeated Colt "Boom Boom" Cabana
Definitely the comedy match of the night. Some of these things (including a grenade incident) that happened in this match will be brought up in my next Minor League Wrestling card. Taylor won when he grabbed the ropes while making the pin. Afterward, he stole a pitcher of beer from a fan in one hand and then with his other hand he also grabbed a Colt Cabana head band off a kid while making his way to the back.
Intermission (10 minutes):
After I personally did something that I REALLY want to talk about here but can't because Tournament Master is asking me to keep it quiet for now, I found myself up against the bar where this semi/pretty hot Asian bartender chick "somehow" sort of talked me into buying an $8 pitcher of Bud Light (I should of got HER contact info just for myself personally ).
When I got back to my seat, I saw Toaster Boy and cman were in line at the merchandise table and then I saw why- Chris Hero just opened up his own table! So after they got their cards signed, I made my way over there and handed off my full pitcher to cman who adroitly grabbed it from the bottom without spilling a single drop.
At first it looked like I just missed Hero by seconds. But then one of the other guys working the table saw my Legends card of Chris Hero and told me to wait just a a second and he went to tap Hero on the back and pointed to me. Hero came back and I asked him if he would sign my Legends card. He said he only had a sharpie and asked me if that was OK. I told him that was cool and he signed my card. I told him thank you for coming back to the table to sign his card for me and he then offered me his hand to shake and said "No problem, enjoy the rest of the show." How cool is that?
End of Intermission
Fifth Match: Roderick Strong defeated Davey Richards.
One of the best matches I've ever seen live period!
Sixth Match: 2 Skinny Black Guys (El Generico and Human Tornado) defeated PWG Champions the Young Bucks.
One of the best tag matches that I've ever seen live period! Human Tornado and El Generico (who both slapped my hand right before entering the ring) got some of the best crowd reactions of the night.
And then, even before their entrance music played, I found out to my surprise that the Young Bucks are heels. There were chants of " F U Young Bucks" shouted even before their music began. I also got my hand slapped emphatically by both members of the Young Bucks during their entrance- I think they sort of did it out of defiance because almost everyone else in the crowd was heavily booing them (but my attitude is if you sign with Filsinger Games then I'm cheering for you regardless of what everyone else is saying).
After he slapped my hand, one of the Young Bucks ( I think cman told me it was Nick) got into a very heated personal face to face argument with a fan sitting behind us directly over the heads of Toaster Boy and cman.
A true 4 to 5 star match with an awesome finish to set up a future title shot. But afterward El Genrico got attacked by Chuck Taylor who challenged him to a match on the next PWG show to determine whether it should be 2 Skinny Black Guys or Taylor's team (Taylor and Omega) who should get the next tag title shot against the Young Bucks.
Seventh Match, the main event: PWG Champion Chris Hero defeated Joey Ryan
The crowd absolutely hated Hero. Constant louds chants of "FU Hero" followed very softly by chants of "Let's Go Hero." The match was incredible and fought under PWG's Guerrilla Warfare rules (basically, no DQ/hardcore).
At one point Hero dropkicked Ryan into just 2 seats away from where I was sitting (many front row fans were knocked down by falling wrestlers during the night, especially during this match)!
When Hero won, the ring was honestly showered with about 40- 50 plastic beer cups and plastic beer pitchers by fans showing their disgust for Hero. Hero then got on the microphone and said everyone who threw their beer at him are (a word that starts with f). But Hero also made it a point to say he wasn't calling the few people cheering for him (like myself) that name. Ryan then grabbed the microphone and said he disagreed with Hero calling the fans that name but he also said that Hero brings out the best in him when he wrestles and shook Hero's hand. Hero then smahed Ryan in the back of the head from behind with the PWG Championship belt!
After the show ended, we stayed for awhile to see if we could get more of our LOTF cards signed. We did talk to some other PWG wrestlers (I really wish I could say more about some potential good news here, but again I've been asked not to say anything for now) and I also got to talk to Chris Hero again and I shook his hand to congratulate him on his victory for retaining the PWG Championship. I just sort of wanted him to know the show was great and we definitely got our money's worth.
Bottom Line: Great matches while hanging out with great friends (Toaster Boy and cman) in a great locale (LA area of So Cal) made for a GREAT night! This was my first PWG show, but it defintely won't be my last. Brian Kendirck is returning to PWG on the next PWG show it was announced last night.
