About four (game time) years ago, a disgruntled Massif had the mother of confrontations with then-GWF co-ownerss, Omega and Morpheus. His less than admirable behavior as a ref and his seemingly close relationships with a number of stars in both the hero and villain camps made it difficult for Omega and Morpheus to grant (Massif's) wish to become the GWF's GM. After much wrangling and stalling (Massif's popularity and closeness to his family made it tough for Omega to deny him outright), The three men met in the ring to discuss the future of the fed.
Morphues was quick to deny Massif a spot as the GM, but Omega went through an entire ritual, including evoking the Executive Board (which included former Commissioners, Carter & Grogan, Johnny Rocket, Exo-King and Terak), before declining Massif's request. Massif's response changed the wrestling landscape forever:
"Then I quit, and I know of half a dozen other GWF stars and legends who'll walk out with me."
Massif's departure didn't immediatley affect the GWF, but about six months later, Mensar, Kill Prey, Splatter, Swarm and a host of other stars began to leave the GWF. Many of these performers felt shut out of on-air spots due to a massive war being waged between Aethrans and a super-group called the RED GUARD (Thantos' team of Bloodline, Encubus, Dreggs, Sleaze, Pegasus, Prodigy, Terminus, Anarchy and Bishop Hell).
Massif used his considerable wealth (Magnus Colby and others credit the big man for being financially brilliant over the course of his career) and the input and enthusiasm of his followers to create an indy fed called U(niversal) P(ro) W(restling). He began signing new and diverse talent from across the galaxy until he had a roster of 45 performers. Tapping Colby, Amazonia and other power brokers no longer affiliated with the GWF, he soon established an alternative wrestling brand and called it NEW UNIVERSAL PRO WRESTLING.
NUPW's roster was a mix of wrestling legends, former GWF stars and interesting newcomers, and it was the home of the Triple XXX title, a no-rules, specialty match belt that made overnight stars of guys like Ahnu, Stigma, Puma, and Shylock.
Massif and company would make three big moves that would lead to head-to-head competition with the GWF. First, they signed a young mystery man named Godsend. Days after converting from Indy to Universal and rechristening itself as NUPW, Godsend won a one-night NUPW Heavyweight Championship tournament (beating Kill Prey in a 5-star Cell match in the finale) and held onto the title for a year defending it against EVERY major star in the federation. Godsend's meteoric rise was helped by the signing of GWF legends, Pegasus and Chaos. Both men feuded with Godsend for the belt, and their unsuccessful bids gave both Godsend and the NUPW title legitimacy. The final maneuver for ring supremacy was the signing of both Endgame and Payback, the two hottest non-GWF stars in wrestling. These men were at the forefront of a massive signing spree that saw the arrivals of Murdok, Disaster (and Paralyze & Havok later on), Reckless, Zed Marlow and others.
Rather than ignoring his former friend and apprentice, Omega (now the sole owner of the GWF) offered to send GWF champions to NUPW to challenge the best of Massif's roster. By the second year of NUPW's existence, the fed was preparing for a SUPERBOWL OF WRESTLING headlined by GWF champion Thunder (an undefeated dynamo with the best work rate in wrestling) against NUPW champion, Godsend (ditto) inside a Cosmic Cage. Thunder would knock Godsend unconscious by tossing him off the top of the cage for the big win, but NUPW stars Atman, Mensar, Disaster and the Trouble Shooters would help the NUPW split the undercard.
Due to some questionable decisions (he did nothing after NUPW champ, Paralyze, interfered in a GWF Torture Chamber match and severely injured Wolf and Vengeance with the PARALYZER), his increasingly poor health and the growing suspicion that he was helping his grandson Bloodline's career, Omega put the GWF up for sale.
Feeling that he more than proved his ability to run a profitable wrestling federation, and believing that his apprentice, Tiberius Prell was more than capable of running NUPW, Massif turned over majority interest (in NUPW) and immediately purchased the GWF. Now, serving as its Commissioner/Owner, he has rebuilt the GWF into a marquee blending of legends (Chaos, Thunder, Overkill, Pegasus), rising stars (Bloodline, Encubus, Anivar, Hanuman) and impact-newcomers (Monolith, Sly Drury, Geist)
Several months ago, the GWF and the NUPW held their second joint card, SUPERBOWL OF WRESTLING II. In an unusual move, both feds agreed to put their respective heavyweight titles on the line. In another 5-Star match, GWF champion Thunder fought valiantly but lost his title to NUPW champion, Paralyze.
Now, GWF stars Chaos, Encubus, Euritar, Bloodline, Thunder and Monolith vie for a shot at Paralyze and the GWF title while Payback, Endgame, Mensar and Nosfera gear up for a run at the NUPW title. Wolf has miraculously returned from (the aforementioned) career-ending injuries to challenge his now hated rival Paralyze “anywhere for any title”, and Godsend has resurfaced in the GWF after letting his NUPW contract expire. His growing alliance with Monolith and Sly Drury and his blatantly displayed hatred of Aethrans has put him on collision course with Thunder and the Gladiators.
The explosive growth of NUPW and the head-to-head competition with the GWF is heating up just in time for the latest edition of HOT SUMMER FIGHTS (’08): !! Stay tuned for card results.
