Two big upsets in the US Open Cup last night. MLS sides Columbus and Chicago lost to USL Champions league team Detroit and USL1 Omaha respectively. The other MLS sides, Dallas, Houston, Cincinnati, Miami, DC, San Jose, and LA Galaxy, handled their business and advanced to the next round. San Jose looked particularly good, all be it against the lowest tier of opponents, but they had five different goal scorers in their win over Bay Cities, impressive considering they just lost their head coach. Tonight's slate of games have a couple of potential "cupsets" that are blinking red, like Charlotte at Greenville and Orlando at Tampa. ESPN+ will be carrying LAFC Vs Orange County, which should be entertaining. Only Cupset of the night saw Austin, the number 2 team in the west at this point, go down to San Antonio FC, a USL Championship team. Full slate of regular season games this weekend. Fun ones to watch include the first stage of The Battle For El Capitán, as FC Dallas host Houston. Seattle, who sit 11th in the West, 21st in the support's shield standings and have only managed 6 goals all season but are still ranked 1st in MLS's official power rankings (because of their Champions League success and the MLSsoccer.com writers not taking the spring games seriously) plays league worst San Jose. So The Sounders might actually pick up some points... Or just make more excuses.

Down in Mexico City, it's CONCACAF Champions League leg 1 tonight. MLS's Seattle Sounders take on Liga MX side Pumas. I hate the Sounders, but I love my MLS... So I'll hold my nose and root for them tonight. But it's going to be tough. Seattle fielded their best 11 against San Jose Saturday, and managed to blow a 3-1 lead. Even MLSsoccer.com's writers had to acknowledge Seattle's struggles as they dropped the team that's 11th in the west and 23rd in the Supporter's Shield standings all the way down to 5th in the power rankings. ::Eye Roll::

Manchester City defeated Real Madrid 4-3 in the Champions League last night. Then Liverpool beat Villareal 2-0 in the other semi-final.
Liverpool are also playing Chelsea in the FA Cup Final next month. It really is a great time to be a Liverpool fan!

Seattle Sounders draw with Puma 2-2 in the CONCACAF Champions League finals, leg 1. The finals don't use the away goal tie breaker, but it still means Seattle has a chance to make MLS history on May 4th in leg 2.

Glad Seattle won the CONCACAF Champions League... Now I can go back to hating them. Particularly with them coming here to FC Dallas on Saturday.

Seattle followed up the (arguably, I mean they ae two time MLS Cup and 4 time US Open Cup champions) biggest win in their franchise history by losing to FC Dallas 2 - 0. With the loss, Seattle drops to next to last in both the Western Conference and the Supporters' Shield standings. Elsewhere around MLS, Montreal looked very impressive in their win against Orlando. They've moved into the conversation in the East, along with Philly, who continue to seem to be the team to beat, and New York Red Bull. Also, Charlotte has quietly worked themselves into playoff contendership through the club's first 11 games. Thing to watch for this week is more US Open Cup action, including LA Galaxy at Cal United, a team from the third tier NISA.

Brutal loss by FC Dallas in the US Open Cup last night. Managing to go from up 2-1 in the 97th minute to losing 4-2 at the end of extended time. Jose Martinez drew a horribly timed red card in stoppage time, putting Dallas down a man for the equalizer less than 90 seconds later and all of extra time. Elsewhere in US Open Cup action, LAFC knocked out Portland in a game I was to tired to watch, Orlando City bested east leading Philly, Inter Miami beat a team from tier 3 on the pyramid, and NYRB continued to be much better on the road than they are at home, picking up the win at DC. Tonight's matchups include two tier 3 teams, Richmond and Cal United, playing hosts to MLS sides Charlotte and LA Galaxy respectively. Along with Rochester at NYFC and San Antonio at Houston, there's lots of potential "Cupsets" tonight.

No Cupsets last night, though Cal United and Rochester both gave the MLS sides they were playing a run for their money. Seattle went down on penalty kicks to San Jose, the second time the Quakes have beaten the CONCACAF champions in three weeks; which will likely result in Seattle being back to number one in the official MLS power rankings next week. ::eyeroll::

14 games into the club's first season, with the team just 2 points out of the last playoff spot, Charlotte FC has "parted ways" with head coach Miguel Angel Ramirez. No reason has been given, though Ramirez was very critical of the way in which the teams roster had been assembled heading into the inaugural season. Back in Feb, he said the club was "screwed" based on the roster so far. Seems most likely to be a conflict with the team Tepper Sports has put in place to run the team, rather than any on field performance. The team's played well, especially the two Polish forwards, under Ramirez.
