I didn't understand why they didn't build a SS match around Cena/Rock/HHH against Miz/Truth/Nash. That would have been a hell of a lot better (story-wise) than just throwing 10 guys in match who have no real reason to fight each other.
Hell, you could have added Punk, ADR, Zack Ryder and Ziggler (or even Otunga) and had a compelling story (faces vs. Laurinitas' guys) with some real question over what would happen (could the faces get along and put their egos aside long enough to beat down their opponents?). Substitute Seamus for Ryder and you basically have all the guys who showed up for the Raw where everyone was "on strike" against the interim GM's guys.

What if the feeling was that there was nothing to be gained by adding it to this show, but that there was something to be gained by keeping it for later?
Would adding HHH vs. Nash to the main event (building to a tradition Survivor Series match) have really made the casual fan more interested in purchasing the show? If you weren't buying for Rock/Cena, you weren't buying for Rock/Cena/HHH. It was the Rock's first match in 7 years, they knew a lot of people were going to buy whether it was good or not. WWE knew that the Rock was a professional and that it would be good, they just didn't really seem to care one way or the other if the match turned out to be great.
Having the HHH vs. Nash match play out on Raw, or into the next PPV allows it to stand alone (probably also satiating HHH ego in process, granted) and possibly boost a ratings point, or buy rate, or twitter follower, or.........

I agree that he may hate to share the spotlight, but with Rock coming back tonight, where else would the spotlight be? That's the point. HHH (we believe) is intentionally leaving himself off the show so he doesn't have to play 2nd fiddle The Rock. HHH loves to be the guy who gets the biggest pop, and on a card featuring The Rock's 1st match in 7-8 years, no way that would happen. I get it - multiple times I get it - but I don't see why having this match on this show would have added much. Back in the day, WCW did this all the time, where angles would start and then miss a PPV or two and then resume - maybe this one is the same, headlining TLC next month?
